Italy defeated Ireland for the first time since 1997 as they edged their visitors 22-15 in Rome on Saturday, claiming their second win of Six Nations 2013.
It was the perfect send-off for Italian prop Andrea Lo Cicero as the Azzurri finish the Championship in fourth, above the struggling Irish and French.
The victory was Italy's first over Ireland in Rome.
For Ireland though the worst could be yet to come as should France beat Scotland by 16 points with a try, then the Wooden Spoon would be theirs. It is also their worst-ever run in the Championship.
Italy wing Giovambattista Venditti was the game's only try scorer early in the second half while the Irish were left to rue three sin-binnings and three early injuries at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
Ireland had the early momentum though and Paddy Jackson put the first of his 15 points on the board with a sixth-minute penalty after Leonardo Ghiraldini was blown for a tackle on Conor Murray.
However the visitors' luck soon ran out in a half which saw several of their players come off injured and iconic centre Brian O'Driscoll, possibly playing his last Ireland international, sent to the sin-bin.
Ireland were robbed several times at their own lineout and it was after Sergio Parisse out-jumped Donnacha Ryan deep in Irish territory that the referee whistled for a penalty which Orquera fired over to level on 13 minutes.
Italy resumed in positive fashion, Edoardo Gori dancing through several green shirts before offloading to Parisse at the halfway line where a lineout was called after he failed to release the ball quickly enough.
When Sean O'Brien failed to get up quickly enough after a tackle, Italy were awarded another penalty but Orquera's effort from 40 metres came off the upright.
It failed to faze the hosts, who went 6-3 up thanks to Orquera's penalty after Cian Healy failed to roll away after tackling Parisse.
Ireland suffered further setback when Keith Earls was brought down and forced off after appearing to injure his shoulder. Luke Marshall was then forced off holding his arm and O'Driscoll was sin-binned for a needless stamp on the chest of Favaro.
Italy ultimately failed to capitalise and it took a penalty from Gonzalo Garcia just before half-time to bring up their lead to 9-3, only for Ireland to reduce the arrears through another Jackson penalty on the stroke of half-time.
Italy had Ireland on the ropes in the opening few minutes of the second half and were finally rewarded with their only try of the game thanks to Venditti, who squeezed the ball over on the right. Orquera, from 35 metres out, converted to give Italy a 16-6 lead which had the crowd in raptures.
Ireland, however, came fighting back and cut the deficit through a Jackson penalty after Parisse was sent to the sin-bin for a trip on Madigan.
Jackson was spot-on again from over 40 metres moments later after Italy had failed to release, taking the score to 16-12 just before the hour.
With Parisse still sidelined, Ireland began to push deep into Italian territory and came close to making the breakthrough after a dominant 20-phase spell in which they finally had to settle for a penalty. Jackson converted for 16-15.
Parisse returned, but moments later it was to say farewell to a tearful Lo Cicero who ended his Italy career in the 64th minute and was replaced by Michele Rizzo.
Another chance to extend the lead was spurned when Garcia's penalty effort was short and wide. But when Orquera was restored to kicking duties minutes later he sent Italy 19-15 in front with another low effort 10 minutes from the final whistle.
After Parisse was brought down by several green shirts as he charged down the left Murray was sin-binned for a tripping offence.
Italy won yet another lineout and a subsequent penalty, with Orquera sealing victory in the final minute.
Man of the match: Italy scrum-half Eduardo Gori impressed at the base but for back-to-back strong showings from number fifteen, we go for Andrea Masi, whose chip into his hands before causing opposite number Rob Kearney to cough up the ball into touch was pretty special.
Moment of the match: It was an emotional occasion when Italy prop Andrea Lo Cicero left the field to a standing ovation in his final Test, but we have to go for the key try scored by Giovambattista Venditti. That score put Italy ten points up, which turned out to be enough of a cushion.

What a joy!
At 16-15 for Italy I was starting to loose some weight and growing in the "classic" fear that Italy will loose it at the end. Not this time.
Zanni was immense...as usual I must say and if he should be in the 6N XV team this year. He is the best 6 in Europe. He can do everything right.
Gori had finally a decent game exept few over dosed box kicks.
Ireland was probably mentally burdened when they start to see teammates going out for injuries. I know that feeling and it really hurts.
BOD is one of my favorite players all time...but even heroes can be villains for a day. He will be eager to end his International career in a fancier way.
What a great ending...two major scalps, lots of confidence and international reputation gained. Ben Fatto!

You could tell during the anthems which team wanted it more. The Italians had fire in their belly, the Irish looked like they didn't want to be there!
Whilst Kidney is dreadful and should be replaced, I think the IRFU also need to re examine and update the rugby structures in the country. We have been regularly competing internationally not because of a few good players as Caramba suggests, but because our players have been the best looked after and conditioned in the championship. Others have since caught up.
We need to extend the academy system, invest more in the club game and engage in 7s. Rugby has never been so popular in Ireland yet playing numbers are down. There is something very wrong with this.
We need to make the schools cups more inclusive and not just the pasture for a few private elite.

There were 24 men on the field today: 23 of them were Italian and the other was O'Driscoll."
How on earth can some Irishman say something like that about BOD? He is untouchble for everything he has done for Irish Rugby in all his fantastic career!!!
Well done to Italy!... And good effort for Ireland, wich was so unlucky with all the injuries. But Italy would won anyway yesterday. Rampant!

it's incredible how all the supposed rugby lovers can only be negative in all the comments. it almost looks like it is unforgivable to not play the perfect game!!I loved every bit of Yesterdays games. it had all that you would want on a Saturday. and that coming from a staunch SH rugby fan. if it is all that bad , why bother watching. come on guys , being critical is one thing but this borders on depressing. go out into the sun and enjoy life and all the rugby that it has to offer!! O for those sharpies, pardon my grammar/spelling ,not my mother tongue.

Better team on the pitch won today, i know all about the injuries but that means Ireland should work on building their in-depth strength and maybe a change in managerial-diretion.
Italy i think produced for the first time ever 2 consecutive good performances and that's a good starting point for the magnificent Brunel to work on.
O'Driscoll..i want to forget about this one (he was and still is my best centre ever), Zanni imo the number 6 of the Tournament.

And I would like to say that it was an honour to see Andrea Lo Cicero play. His tears reminded me of those of Mario Ledesma. Great men with hard bodies and tough minds who feel their heart break at times like this.
I had the chance to shake Andrea Lo Cicero's hand three weeks ago by the Pantheon as we ran into him in the street (I went to Rome to see the Italy-Wales match) and we had a picture taken together. Grande Andrea! Tanti auguri! Thanks for the memories. Your last drive with ball in hand crashing into the Irish defence epitomizes your commitment to this sport.

I called this result after the Italians beat England - I think its time that PR stopped referring to these results as "shocks".
Felt that, but for a little more luck in Edinburgh, they may have finished third.
Looks like BOD has finally given up on becoming pope.

Agree about Zanni. Just about the most underrated player in the 6N. And unlike other Italian players, plays consistently well game in, game out. Along with Masi the most consistent. If the team to Australia was a 6N team and not a Lions one, I would have both these players in my squad. Parisse can do wonderful things but at times is actually a negative for the team with poor discipline and passing errors as was shown today.
Sad way for BOD to end his career as again I don't think he'll make the Lions squad and whoever is coach of Ireland after the 6N will probably take a youngish Ireland team to the US & Canada in June to start the rebuilding process in earnest. Someone on here said it'll be a hard few years for Ireland but their U20 team hasn't been too bad so there must be some bright young guys to come through. I think Ireland's results also show that a significant amount of the Irish provincial success in Europe is helped by their imports. Take those imports out and I doubt the likes Leinster and Ulster would've been as successful.
Sad way

Italy are no longer the whipping boys of the 6N.
With more composure & accuracy they will beat all the other teams in the next few years.
Italy's defence & set-piece are as good as any other 6N team these days - beating Ireland was no surprise to me.

Why was this a shock? Ireland are rudderless at the moment and never looked like winning this match.

I forgot to mention just how good Gordon d'Arcy is and how sorely he was missed today: Parisse wouldn't have got away with half his steals in midfield had Gordon been there.

Ireland are now back to where they were in the pre-professional era: last of the European nations. Or to put it another way: now that Paul O'Connell and Brian O'Driscoll are gone, Ireland are back to their 'real' postion: last.
Let's face it, Ireland have been carried by a handful of exceptional players - BOD, POC, Stevie Ferris and Sexton, and if they are missing then the whole ship capsizes. There is no depth ... or rather, under the current management, no depth has been allowed to emerge and get some experience.
They will continue to win the odd game against all the odds, heroically, before returning to their place as last of the class.
Unless, unless... we get in a decent SH coach, forget Provincial rivalries, and use summer tours as a testing ground rather than a summer holiday.

paddy91317- Bit over the top! I think you're gonna be a bit depressed when the next Ireland squad is named because im pretty sure that Earls, Heaslip, and Ross will all be in there.
Look, Ireland have had terrible injuries this year to the point where they had a forward in the backline today- so what do you want Kidney to do? And he cant legislate for his players losing their heads and getting binned again and again.
3in4-'Thanks for nothing.'- Actually i think you've got your only Grand Slam in living memory to thank him for. You also beat a Tri nations power at a World Cup for the first time as well as almost winning away to New Zealand for the very first time.

it would have been a shock had ireland beaten italy.
as it turned out ireland were shockingly poor at times. dismal. and compounded by some very unedifying behaviour by some of their players including o'driscoll who will be cited and will doubtless appeal and serve a 15 minute ban with time off for good behaviour .
none of that detracts from another great italian performance. well done

Deserved and overdue.
It was a depleted Ireland, but the difference between the two teams today was significant 15 - 20 points.
PR: no Villain of the Game? Come on, BOD's stamp on Favaro looked like Zidane's headbutt on Materazzi. Utterly coward. I hope he gets cited, gets banned and does not get called in the Lions' team.
