Force: Too strong in Brisbane

The Western Force captured their first win of the Super Rugby season after upsetting the Reds 19-12 in Brisbane on Saturday.

Against all odds, the men from the west kept the Queenslanders scoreless in the second half and tryless for the duration of the match as they bagged their first ever victory at Suncorp Stadium.

It wasn't pretty, but the Force won't care. A win is a win, and moves them up to 11th place above the Waratahs and the Rebels.

The only try of the match came through Force winger Alfi Mafi in the 32nd minute of the match, while South African import fly-half Sias Ebersohn kicked five from six goals in a strong performance for the Perth-based franchise.

They were the underdogs but deserved their win - being hungrier in defence and more accurate in attack than the Reds, who were shut out by resolute defence in the second half.

The Force took the early lead thanks to Ebersohn's opening three-pointer and the Reds were fortunate not to have conceded a try to Chris Alcock after Quade Cooper's clearance kick was charged down.

After missing his first attempt at goal, Cooper made amends with three successful kicks at goal in between another Ebersohn penalty to put his team in front (9-6).

The visitors, however, went back in front in the 32nd minute when influential scrum-half Alby Mathewson broke from a line-out, brushing off Saia Faingaa on the way, before putting Mafi over in the left corner.

Ebersohn converted, but the Reds had the final say in the first half when Cooper closed to the gap on the stroke of half-time. It would be the last time the Queenslanders would score as they went into the break one point adrift of the Force (12-13).

The second half proved just as dire as the first. Mathewson almost set up a try to Junior Rasolea but his kick ahead was spilled by the winger over the try-line.

Luckily though for the Force, Ebersohn raised the flags two more times to give his team some breathing space and it meant the Reds had to score twice to win.

After holding the Force out after 16 phases, the Reds had the chance to draw the match in the 73rd minute however their efforts came up without the points when Reds hooker James Hanson was held up over the line.

To take a leaf out of your book when it comes to commenting the reds would have lost 4 in a row to the hurricanes if it wasn't for the help from the ref

It was probably a great game if you're a Force fan, Trinats.

But I don't know, didn't waste my time.

Come on mate, you can do better than that !

If Aus have a weak conf, where does it leave NZ conf ? Bottom of the table highlanders, winless, have to play Chiefs next week. then the "flash in the pan" Reds who have won their last 9 out of 10 games against kiwi opposition !

jmanngod says...

This is not surprising The Reds always had the look of a flash in the pan about them. The Oz conference is so weak now that it can only really sustain one half decent team (as long as it is coached and played by Kiwis and saffers.

Good to see NZ's no 6 half back completely outplay Aussies best!

Things you may not know: 1) Kyle Godwin used to be a ballboy for the Force, 2) Brendan Cannon's only win in QLD with the Force / Perth Gold was during the ARC, 3) that it looks like people may be actually looking at the Force a bit more seriously since the last few matches. Oh and I think its the first time that the Force have been ahead of the Tahs on the conference table

But the Reds are plagued by injury.

The ref was awful?

How many points did the Reds leave on the paddock??

Who do I sound like???

N.Sharpe who was berated on this site by a nonentity last year despite rising to captain his country and win the highest accolade the award from his fellow players has swapped his playing boots for the microphone. I for one am enjoying his knowledgeable comments and lack of bias one hears from the two clowns Martin and Kearns. Now that we have Sharpe, Cannon, Kafer and Horan who I believe make up a good team with Greg Clark its time to shed the deadwood and get rid of the terrible twins.

Jay Starr - agree - Nathan looks and sounds sharpe with the microphone - talks well, makes sense and has little or no bias! Unusual.

Mathewson was outstanding and regular getting game time is helping his game. Top "NZ" half this week, easily.

Well done Force, deserved win. First win of the season just like the Crusaders. Only the lowlanders winless (weak Kiwi conference !)

Reds looked disinterested, took the Force too lighly or losing Fainga just before kick off and then Simmons (then Quirk) threw them out ?

Glad we got our shocking game out of the way so early on in the season !

I'm off to drown my sorrows..........two rums please barman every hour and one every hour after I pass out !

@Jaystarr, you are on the money man!

So much for all the Red stars. We were hopeless tonight, didn't have a clue.

Robbie Deans better have more than one rabbit in his hat, tonight did not reflect well on Ozzie rugby.
