Louis Picamoles France Ireland

Saved France: Louis Picamoles

A try from powerful France number eight Louis Picamoles salvaged a 13-13 result against Ireland as they left the Aviva Stadium with a point.

The Toulouse man's try six minutes from time, converted by Frederic Michalak, ensured the French ended their run of three straight defeats.

It had looked like Ireland would hold on to pick up a priceless Six Nations win but a series of injury concerns over Brian O'Driscoll and Luke Marshall left the hosts scrambling for fit players before Picamoles crashed over in the 73rd minute.

It was the second successive draw between the two sides but extended France's winless streak over the past two Six Nations to seven, their worst run since 1926-27, and leaves them needing to beat Scotland at home next Saturday to have any chance of avoiding the wooden spoon.

The Irish made the early running in terrible weather conditions and were rewarded after a superb tactical kick deep into the French 22 by O'Driscoll set up a lineout.

Peter O'Mahony won the ball and from the resulting driving maul Heaslip squeezed over the line to score his eighth international try - Jackson belied concerns over his place-kicking, after a disastrous performance against Scotland, by landing a superb conversion.

France were presented with a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 16th minute but Michalak, whose selection had raised eyebrows after three poor performances, missed his penalty from close range.

Ireland were very much in control but Jackson missed a chance to make it 10-0 in the 23rd minute as his penalty from long range drifted wide.

Michalak made no mistake with his second chance in the 27th minute as he slotted over a penalty to make it 7-3.

However, the Irish scrum were forcing the French into infringement after infringement and Jackson, assuming responsibility when the Irish could have kicked for the corner, opted for a kick at goal from long range in the 30th minute and converted it to restore the seven point advantage.

The 21-year-old, playing in only his second test, was showing little fear and he punished the French again three minutes later as he stroked a penalty over from about 45 metres for 13-3 which even had injured first choice fly-half Jonathan Sexton grinning and applauding from the stands.

Michalak's woeful first-half finished on a suitably low note as given the chance to give France a filip on the stroke of half-time he sent another kickable penalty wide to leave the Irish sitting comfortably enough at the break.

Jackson had an early chance in the second-half to extend the lead but his effort fell just short.

The Irish were still controlling the game but prop Mike Ross conceded a penalty in the 54th minute and Morgan Parra stepped up, replacing the misfiring Michalak, and converted it for 13-6.

Parra, though, proved he too was fallible, missing a tough penalty attempt just before the hour mark as the French started to pressure the hosts into a series of errors.

The visitors pressed forward desperate to redress the balance but saw a chance go begging as with extra men wide out to the right they failed to push home the advantage and the Irish defence held firm.

However, eventually the French breached the line as Picamoles took advantage of Ireland dithering after a penalty was awarded and tapping it quickly he touched it down for his fifth try for his country - Michalak stepped up to the task and converted for 13-13.

I thought Murray played his best game for Ireland, why he was subbed is a mystery. Well done Jackson, impressive performance. Irish lineout was a massive improvement on the Scotland game, and the maul which got up to trotting speed was impressive. It seems to be Ireland's most successful phase at present, and we need to build on that.

Seems we are running out of players, injury list is getting heavy.

Terrible game really, although the weather was horrible both of teams looked boring. France really had nothing in attack regardless of the weather. If Saint Andre is there for the Tour of New Zealand and I hope he isn't, he really needs to be pick a team of both youth and experience to take to New Zealand like he did on the Argentinian tour, to start building a decent team for the next world cup.

But the fool also needs to keep the young players in the squad, they are not going to develop at international level by playing one test match in a blue moon.

I think he should leave Michalak, Clerc, Debaty and Szarsweski behind for the NZ tour and look to the future. He has got options in the halves either Plisson or Lopez. He has got options at hooker as well. I thought Guirado looked good when he came on and really needs to be given more opportunities to play test rugby. Tolofua is another option along with Kayser.

He also has options for props ie Guillamon, Poirot, Watremez, and there are also probably others I don't know about.

In saying this the French really also need to look at reducing the quota again for the number of Foreigners playing in France, because is not helping player development whatsoever.

another dire game of rugby.

france managed to piece together 15 minutes of average team play following 65 minutes of excrement.... and yet could have ended up winning it. they were dreadful, rescued by a few big hearted individual performances.

ireland were for a while effective in the things they can do (slowing down the oppositions ball, good kicking game, excellent mauling) .

the weather did the rest. not a great advert for rugby.

Could be worse - could have been the Scotland v Wales match just before it.

Today has been an awful advert for our NH rugby - very, very poor!

Chance to win it at the end, Michalak kicks it away...............hopefully this is the end of PSA, Lagisquet, Michalak and the start of exciting French rugby under Novet, Mallet or Cotter.

@ 3in4 , thats the spirit ya muppet, just resort to insulting professional sportspeople trying to do their best for their country from the comfort of anonymity on your fat couch, what have you ever done?? Support your team ( and offer intelligent criticism by all means) but the name calling is so junior infants ( which must be the class your in).

"Red card to the BBC commentator: "France might feel like everyone hates them, and rightly so." Biased and borderline xenophobic comment in my opinion."

@Axax You completely took that out of context, he said "the French fans are booing France right now, France might feel like everyone hates them..."

he didn't mean "everyone" as in the whole world hating the French; he was refering to the French fans hating their team

There clearly is an issue with the French back three. Even though the conditions were not ideal for free flow rugby, only Yohann Huget (winger turned fullback) managed to spark constant danger.

Where were Vincent Clerc and Maxime Médard? They were nowhere to be seen in attack anyways.

Given Yohann Huget overall performance in Twickenham and Dublin, it certainly must be time for PSA to grant him Vincent Clerc' seat on the right wing. While there is no doubt Brice Dulin and Jean-Marcellin Buttin are the current best fullbacks in France, I also feel the left wing should be open to a more electric winger: Marvin O'Connor is my first choice or Marc Andreu.

Players aside, Steve Walsh the referee, had a far better game (as always) than Craig Joubert. I have always found Joubert did not have the credentials to officiate at this level (especially since his dreadful RWC 2011 final) but the Scotland-Wales game was his worst by a long stretch.

A game for the purists, it went primal as the 2nd half porgressed, Jaysus it says it all that S Cronin came on as a sub for a scrum half,

Can any One explain to me,how We did'nt get a penalty when Earl's was taken off the ball by Debaty. From the bar where I watched it, that was a sure fire penalty(AT LEAST).

Strange game, with the exception of the opening weekend the only real contest we've seen so far is England v France.

@Fish

Was your comment sarcastic or derogatory? 'The old man', as you call him, has given a lot to the game of rugby, not only for his country but his club as well. No I am not Irish, I am Southern African who appreciates a very very good player.

'Wooden Spoon', would all of those who say that France are NOT 'Wooden Spoons' please check on Wikipedia which says " is a mock or real award to those who come LAST in a competition!

Question: When was the last time France were bottom of the table?

I knew that whitewash is for 0 point and wooden spoon is for the last placed. Infact Italy got nine wooden spoons and five whitewashes in the previous 6N. Or not?

I am interested to learn that you can only get a wooden spoon with "nulle point". Still finishing bottom or nearly bottom with the hugh resources available in France cannot be good. I thought that PSA would be a pragmatic coach, playing players in their normal positions and rewarding loyalty and effort. Unfortunately once installed as head coach he has resorted to the knee-jerk policies of his precessors. Must be in the contract.....

Dreadfull game, with poor play from both teams. Hope trinh Duc starts instead of Michalk in the next game. PSA has to see reality (finally) and accept that Michalak is not playing well in this tournament. After four games, this should now be obvious, even to him.

les_bleus says...

PR, there will be no wooden spoon in this tournament. The wooden spoon is for a team with "0" points at the end of the tournament. Last place, yes, that is still very possible.
