italy v france Martin Castrogiovanni

Roaring: Martin Castrogiovanni

An outstanding first round of the Six Nations climaxed in Rome last Sunday as Italy stunned France. This week they look to win again, at Murrayfield.

Long associated with the Wooden Spoon decider, this year sees an unusual situation whereby the Azzurri are hunting back-to-back victories.

Put simply, Italy were superb against France last weekend and looked capable of standing toe-to-toe with any of the northern hemisphere outfits in 2013. Of course the big question now is can they repeat that 80-minute Rome performance on the road and not fall back into their stifling tactics?

So what made the difference? Noticeable was the conditioning of this Italian outfit. They were as fit and strong as we have seen them since their Six Nations inception in 2000 as France - while themselves stoic in defence - met an opponent on top of its game both with and without the ball.

Other apparent factors surely had to be a fit and fresh Martin Castrogiovanni, who has not played as much as he would have liked at Leicester Tigers in 2012/13 due to Dan Cole's presence. He was outstanding, so too number eight Sergio Parisse and a midfield combination that coach Jacques Brunel would do well to look after. Tommaso Benvenuti has for a long time been considered something of a golden child in the country and is coming of age this year (the score against Toulouse one of his highlights thus far) while Alberto Sgarbi is an ideal 12 who has power and a good skill set. His absence due to an ankle injury is a setback.

In truth it couldn't have been a more special weekend for the Azzurri as nearly 400 former players were awarded official caps in a ceremony at Olympic Stadium before standing pitch-side to sing the national anthem. If seeing the likes of Diego Dominguez and 61-year-old Luciano Modonesi belting out the "Fratelli D'Italia" (Brothers of Italy) didn't light a fire in the belly then nothing would have for a squad that gave their supporters reason to cheer.

Should they back up last year's 13-6 win - making it two from two in 2013 - Italy would then host Wales probably in second spot. You see where I am going. But even if their next two games don't produce wins, the Six Nations seems to have a new Italy in its midst.

Let us confirm that Scotland are favourite for this fixture and have had an extra day's rest following their painful lesson at HQ. Desperation and a yearning to turn things around will be the driving force this weekend, but it's fair to say they look like a side lacking confidence.

Scott Johnson and Dean Ryan will no doubt have been sifting through the wreckage of that loss, and of course hope to have laid foundations for a response ahead of a run of three home matches that see them face Ireland and Wales after next week's scheduled break.

As always, Kelly Brown got through a heap of work, just like he has for Saracens all season while Stuart Hogg showed touches of class at fifteen. But with a pack that was going backwards for large chunks of the game, it was always going to be difficult for Scotland to threaten. Yet it was worrying for Scottish fans that their usually bullish lock combination of Richie Gray and Jim Hamilton came off second best to Geoff Parling and Joe Launchbury.

Rob Harley is the most notable inclusion in the side for Saturday as injury rules out Alasdair Strockosh. The Glasgow youngster goes up against one of the unsung heroes of this Italian side, Alessandro Zanni, ahead of what will be a fascinating 80 minutes at Murrayfield where so many questions are set to be answered. The big one surely has to be whether Italy can replicate that Rome performance and create a scenario that surely no one had predicted.

Ones to watch:

For Scotland: In one of two changes made to the Scottish side, flanker Rob Harley is called in to replace the injured Alasdair Strokosch. Harley, who scored the match-winner against Samoa on debut when he was introduced off the bench last June, has been pushing hard for selection and aged just 22 the Crewe-born Glasgow man could cement a long-term spot in the side with a strong performance against what is a superb Italian back-row.

For Italy: Judging from our recent poll, Planet Rugby readers believe Sergio Parisse to be the best number eight currently playing in the world. We would go along with that and cannot recall him ever having a bad day at the office for his country. Ably backed up by in-form flank Alessandro Zanni, Parisse leads and his team-mates follow. Scotland must find a way to negate his impact otherwise the 29-year-old will be marching to successive triumphs.

Head-to-head: There were some calls for Max Evans' inclusion in the centres this weekend but Johnson has stuck with Sean Lamont and Matt Scott in midfield. The former's battle with Tommaso Benvenuti is an intriguing one as it opposes the directness of the Scot against the silky running of the Italian. On form Benvenuti has the edge but with a new partner in now Pro D2 player Gonzalo Canale alongside, the midfield becomes a highly critical area.

@bothhands agree. @propmelsey: you should look at weather forecasts before making your predictions. Cold and rainy for all 3 games; can't see Italy beating Scotland in those conditions: in that weather ScotB beat Saxons and Scotland beat Oz, away. Scotland are extremely good in the cold wet weather. Doesn't suit England either with their passing game. And Wales's bush bash bosh will not suffer from rain whilst Fofana will on strike or inciting a revolution on the wing with no ball. As said below its going to be more attritional weekend where the wrestlers will win. Sadly it may not be Englands day but no excuses; they have to win. Pop passes work ok in rain and we've still got two full backs for the bombs and counter kicks. And they will chase the kicks this weekend, of that we can be sure.

Italy has to be very careful with this game out. By far the most tricky mental obstacle between themselves and the Scottish. Any lack of attention and the Scotts could upset the Italian game plan. Scrum time seems pretty favourable for the Azzurri but I'm sure the back raw will compensate a bit....still, I'm puzzled byt Denton being left on the bench. Bad call. He was very active and positive against England.

The backs are all pretty much on the same thin tread. they gotta be prefect and accurate avoiding silly handling errors.

This is gonna be a game decided by the team who has a stronger mind set and concede less penalties.

Both kickers are defenitly not perfect. Laidlaw has a low % of kicks and so Orquera this season.,..ofc Luciano did hugely well last game, but can he delivery it again?

So very tricky game this one. I just hope is gonna be entertaining and full of tries.

I feel optimist: Italy by 5!

@Propmelsey

I would be very surprised if your prediction of margins materialises. Scotland will not allow Italy to win in Scotland by 16. England will not beat Ireland in Dublin, full stop. France might well do a job on Wales, and it could be 24, but I would bet against that, with money. Enjoy the weekend

@Propmelsey

Must have been a nice earner from that bet! :)

I certainly wouldn't mind high scoring games from the French and Italians for entertainments sake, but I hope (no offense) that you're proven wrong with the Ire/Eng game!

I think the starting XVs are fairly evenly matched aside from back row and midfield, where I think Ireland has a slight edge. But really not much to separate the two teams on paper. Ireland by 6 - 8 pts

Italy must be careful of backs rushes (Hogg, Maitland and Visser), Scotland has to substain the front row battle.

100th cap for Lo Cicero, just one less than the recordman Troncon!

Last weekend was fantastic but i think this weekend could be the best out of the championship. A must win for nearly all sides. Whereas last week Italy and scotland probably wouldnt have been too upset with losses.

Ireland will feel they need to win as they will be more nervous of the visit of France as they are really Ireland bogey team. Ireland i think would be happy with 4 wins

England want a grand slam to set them up for the next world cup as well as embedding lancaster as successful coach. Let us not forget that before the All Blacks game. there were grumblings about whether Lancaster was the right man for the job after only winning one game(against Fiji) since the previous 6N. How fickle we all are.

Wales are truly in the doldrums. A possible 9 losses on the bounce. Howley will never get another coaching job anywhere again after that record.

France after last weeks defeat will be wanting to win every other game in the 6N. I think they will win 3 losing in twickenham. With France everyting is about coinfidence. A 20 point win against wales will help.

Scotland will know that tomorrow is their best chance to avoid a wooden spoon. Dont think they will do it.

Italy will want to confirm that they are the 5th best team in the tournament from now on and who would argue. It means that from now on that Italy can look to be better than either wales or Ireland. I think that will be another decade at least tho. Still, it must feel good to be permanently off the bottom.

Like I said a great weekend. I expect the rugby to suffer and be a bit more attritional but the tension to be greater....Cant wait.

Hi Rukrym .... No not having a laugh ... expect those sort of margins ... I had England by 20 last week too when eveyone was talking up a 'tight result' ..... (had £20 on it at bookies too :)) ...... Can see at least a couple of penalty tries for Italy id the get a 5m scrum or a maul going ...... France wil HAMMER the welsh.... in my opinion trhe welsh were punching well above their weight last season and are now being found out ..... Shaun Edwards a waste of space ...... England to power over the irish in every department ... scrum .. lineout .... midfield et al ......

Italy would've had to really lift their game to beat the French; and with only a six day turn around playing away from home, I think they will struggle. Winning one off at home is one thing, winning away in a competition where you have only won once on the road(in 14 years) is another altogether. Scotland's problem against England is that their forwards simply didn't up to the party... it won't be the same this time round at home in Murrayfeild. Scotland's back three are far superior to Italy's; and when that ball goes wide - Italy will be cut to shreds. My only concern is Lamont's seeming refusal or inability to pass the ball... a skill that comes in pretty useful when you have one of the most dangerous back threes in the six nations outside you. That aside, I'll say Scotland to cut loose and win by at least 10 points.

I have to go along with other posters predictions here, and entirly agree with@Porridge_time about Murray,Ford,Hamilton, and id add S.Lamont.I think the Italian pack will dominate, and have the scots on the backfoot, scrambling for any kind of decent possesion,as they where against England.FH is still a big problem area for Scotland aswell as neither R.Jackson or D.Weir imo, have shown they can step up to internatinal leval.T.Heathcoate has shown he has the potential at Bath, but i think its at least a another season away to be honest.Scotland need another year maybe 2 to sort themselves out really My prefered team all being well would be 15)Hogg 14)Maitland 13)Ansbro 12)Scott 11)Vissier 10)Heathcoate 9)Laidlaw 8)Beattie 7)Rennie 6)Brown(c) 5)Gilchrist 4)Grey 3)Cross 2)Hall 1)Grant

Subs16)MacArthur 17)Dickinson 18)Welsh 19)Ryder 20)Denton 21)Barklay 22)Pyrgros 22) anyone of A.Grove A.Dunbar.and M.Evans most probily Evans if pushed.As to a result this weekend Italy by 6

It's not surprising five of the eight Scotland reserves are forwards. After watching the bulk, speed and dynamism of the Italian eight versus France, the Scottish pack could be anhiliated!! They who speed and ferocity of the Italian forwards even late into the match was commendable. I agree, Ford who is lucky to be there basically due to there being no international level performing Scottish hookers and Murray need to prove themselves after a lacklustre display last week..

Are you having a laugh?! I can't see any of the teams this weekend winning by much more than one score.

France might fair a bit better than that but I doubt we'll see anything near the margins you're suggesting...

Well, people will be judging the Scott Johnson - Dean Ryan coaching team at the end of this match. you think johnson and ryan and you think about a wide brittle game plan. Dean Ryan's tenure as Gloucester coach was entertaining but the big Forward teams would just batter through the middle and score tries. The abiding memory is that of Alex Tuilagi running over the top of Ryan Lamb in a Premiereship final and that's something the Italy Back Row will be grinning evilly about. On the other hand. Ryan always talks sense on the rugby club, he comes over as knowing his forward play so maybe now that he's free of the salary cap costraints of the premiereship he now has a more rounded team in scotland than he ever had with Backs Dominated Gloucester (mind you the reason gloucester blew all their cash on flashy expensive Backs and mediocre cheapo Forwards was Dean Ryan!)

The good news for scotland is that its going to be dry, so they have a half decent chance to take on the azzurri backs. It's their best shot at victory. they will be in for a torrid time if it becaomes an 8 vs 8 forward dominated match. Italy by 4 pts. so long as it stays dry.

Italy 10+... Scottish defence and their lack of effort up front will be their downfall.

France 20... Wales unfortunately will be on the end of a backlash.

Ireland 10... Ireland will front up better to the English pack and curtail their offloading game... plus the Irish backs have a greater cutting edge and finishing ability than Scotland.

Would be very surprised if Scotland manage to turn things around this weekend... although I'd be happy happy happy if they manage to do so.

Players like Murray, Hamilton and Ford really have to justify their existence this weekend against a pretty formidable Italian pack. The aforementioned trio have been passengers in the Scotland squad for a number of seasons now and should really be in the last chance saloon this weekend.
