Preview: France v Samoa

22nd November 2012 22:56

France s scrum half Morgan Parra C vies with Samoan s winger David Lemi rear

One to watch: Morgan Parra

France and Samoa have made the biggest headlines during the end-of-year international window. On Saturday they go head-to-head in Paris.

There are some high-profile clashes on the menu elsewhere this weekend but if you're looking for high-paced entertainment then you're more likely to find it at the Stade de France than at Twickenham.

Indeed, Samoa had everyone (who isn't Welsh) out of their seats last Friday while France's intentions to play with plenty of width against Argentina (in the first-half at least) suggested we're in for a cracker as les Bleus return to the French capital after their visit to Lille.

Complacency is unlikely to be an issue for the XV de France as the shock defeat to Tonga in the World Cup last year will still be fresh in the minds of many in the home side. All the noises coming out of the French headquarters have been very positive, so there is no question of the kind of internal discord that was at the root of that France's Jekyll and Hyde form during the Marc Lièvremeont era.

There should be no lack of motivation for the hosts either as victory will cement fourth place in the IRB rankings and ensure they are drawn as the top seeds in one of the four 2015 World Cup pools on December 3, avoiding one of the SANZAR heavyweights in the process.

But Philippe Saint-André will not be counting his chickens just yet. Samoa's win in Cardiff was no fluke. Victory over the Wallabies in Sydney last year and a mighty close game with the Springboks at the RWC should leave no doubt as to the islanders' ability to run with the big dogs.

The Samoan team is packed with quality players from 1 to 15, including a handful that ply their trade in France. Census Johnston, Ti'i Paulo and Joe Tekori have become star names in French domestic rugby and they will be able to provide valuable inside information on their club team-mates and others with whom they've crossed paths in the Top 14.

Johnston and Paulo join forces with Wasps prop Sakaria Taulafo to form a formidable front-row that is unlikely to get crunched the way the Wallabies were on their visit to St. Denis a fortnight ago.

It's clear from the comments coming out of the home camp they are not underestimating their opponents and are well aware of the danger - and that was the word used regularly - involved in Saturday's clash. Indeed, the physical onslaught dished out on Wales has not gone unnoticed.

Saint-André has resisted the temptation to experiment and rotation has been kept to a minimum. In fact, the three changes made to the French side have significantly bolstered the experience of the starting XV.

Considering past results and current form, France will start as favourites, but that will mean nothing to the visitors.

Players to watch:

For France: One of the most regular features of the French team in recent years, Morgan Parra has started the last two games on the bench. Back in the starting XV, the goal-kicking scrum-half will be out to prove he is France's best 9. Like Fred Michalak on his outside, Parra is not a big man and that inside channel could see some heavy traffic. Louis Picamoles has been one of the players of the month, not just for France but anywhere in Europe. Simply devastating with ball in hand, he'll also be tasked with stopping the big men off set-pieces.

For Samoa: Toulouse prop Census Johnston is regarded as one of the strongest tightheads in European club rugby. Up against one of the best scrummaging units in the world, his role will be crucial in laying a platform for Samoa's runners. Robert Lilomaiava scored four tries on his Test debut - on the wing - against Canada two weeks ago. He starts at full-back this weekend, and is set to get a much sterner examination of his international credentials.

Head-to-head: Clermont Auvergne team-mates Benjamin Kayser and Ti'i Paulo have been promoted to the starting line-ups of their respective sides and go head-to-head at hooker. Kayser is generally the better scrummager while Paulo is a real threat with ball in hand.

Previous results:
2009: France won 43-5 at Stade de France
1999: France won 39-22 in Apia

Prediction: Significantly, both Samoa's win over Wales and France's success against Argentina happened below closed roofs. With a wet surface expected in Paris, the packs and tactical kickers will play a bigger role. France are likely to have the edge in both departments and we cannot ignore the impressive scorelines of their previous two games. France by 12 points.

@ 1samoa1: no problem with big tackles, France have provided a few specialists of their own - just talk to Wilkinson about Serge "La Faucheuse" Betsen.

But charging shoulder first without even trying to wrap your target with your arms is not tackling... (not that this is a Samoan exclusivity, just ask Parra about Lawes)

Anyway, losing would be a disappointment for France, and if they show the same commitment as during previous tests it shouldn't happen. I'd like to see the Samoan pack really threatening ours as I wonder how Michalak will cope with his forwards on the backfoot - maybe that's one of the reason for Parra to start.

And I hope we won't butcher penalty kicks to touch as the ball would come back harder than previous weeks!

This is match France should win by 15-20 - or Samoa by 4 if they manage to bully us enough.

Love the Samoan game but I love the new France that little bit more! I hope the game is a cracker, fast and fizzing with backs running freely. Allez both sides!

kahn must remain composed if samoa are to win dont get too excited and focus on the job at hand! If not i would bring on Jeremy su'a immediately if not even start the game in the 1st half.

G.pisi has to also remain focused especially on his kicking, but also his long passes to the backs dont just throw it out wide willy nilly!

Im very impressed with the tight 5 especially census,fa'asavalu, teofilo, trevorainus and especially taisina tuifua!

Paul Williams will be a big loss but after seeing Johnny Leota when he came on he made some good strong deceptive runs and i hope he has a strong game and i see him making a few breaks im hoping!!!!

Robert Lilomaiava played excellent for Samoa against Canada scoring 4 tries however France is a totally different and much stronger team with better defense but he looked sharp and i hope he has a strong game!

I believe the ref could really influence this game after watching Samoa play Wales and he will be told to be very strict on Samoa especially in defense when it comes to tackling i just hope he doesn't ruin the game and lets the game flow and just realize that when Samoa tackle its done HARD!

Regardless of the score Samoa has done so well competing against countries with big money to pay there players and all the resources available to them. When Samoa win the most they will get is a "Thank you' from the prime minister but thats what pushes this Samoa team to perform because they are playing for their families, and the people of SAMOA!

France to win easily. Wales are so poor at the moment.

This could be closer than anybody expects. French with the wrong attitude, few powerful hits to decrease their animus pugnandi, trailing at the beginning of the second half and the French will start throwing the ball purposeless et voilà the upset is served.

Game # 4 in my couch potato priority list for the week end.

France are on a roll. If they were another team I'd be tempted to give them the 6 nations trophy now, but they're still france and these wins are all at home.

Can't see Samoa winning this one.

A cracker. Both teams have powerful forwards able to break through some of the most ferocious defence with fast and furious backs.

If Samoa retain the ball and force France to defend for a multitude of phases they could win, however if the French get a sniff of the line and create enough gaps it will be curtains for Samoa.

France by 10.

Game of the weekend no doubt, 2 form teams going for it, we've seen some good performances, one or two enjoyable spectacles, not to mention a few one sided dull affairs. This will be a great contest 1st and foremost.

May the Best Team win.

There is no room for complacency and there won't be. If France win tonight, it will be 3/3 mission accomplished for PSA. If France lose, it will be a massive win for Samoa and they will be watched out much closer in the futur. 2 very physical teams for an exciting games. Go luck for both.

Players to look out for Samoa.. apart from the usuals (Fotuali'i, the backrow and the Pisi brothers) I'll say Joe Tekori, David Lemi and Johnny Leota in particular .. For France I definitely think the whole team is dangerous especially Michalak, Fofana and the French backrow.. My head says France by 10.. But my heart says Manu Samoa by a whisker!! Samoa's performance will all depend on the half pairing (assuming forwards will match France in the set piece) And France's performance will depend on outsmarting the Samoans.. don't play into Samoa's physicality. because that's what they like. All the best to both teams :).. It's gonna be a blinder!!.. And may the best team win!!..
