Ashley Beck Ospreys v Treviso Heineken Cup

Ospreys try-scorer: Ashley Beck

Ospreys survived a second-half Treviso comeback to earn a 38-17 bonus-point victory in their Heineken Cup opener.

Dan Biggar's trusted boot gave Ospreys the early breathing space they needed, as his hat-trick of penalties arrived only 15 minutes into the game.

Kris Burton kicked a penalty of his own just minutes before Eli Walker produced the first talking point of the game, evading four tackles as he ran inside from his wing to dot down next to the posts for the game's first try.

Both sides were reduced to 14 men as the Ospreys' Adam Jones and Treviso captain Antonio Pavanello were yellow carded for swapping punches, while the Italians were reduced even further with the sin-binning of Manoa Vosawai on his return to the side after a shoulder injury.

At 16-3 up on the half-time whistle, Ospreys took the game to Treviso with their second try five minutes into the second period. Hanno Dirksen went over in the corner, and with Biggar's second conversion of the night, Treviso were staring at a 23-3 deficit.

But that galvanised the Italians, as they came back with two tries; Vosawai making amends for his earlier indiscretion, before Luke McLean scored his first Heineken Cup try.

Both scores were converted by Burton, so with only a six-point advantage going into the final phase of the game, Ospreys had to pull something out the bag.

A fourth Biggar penalty eased the pressure, and with Simone Favaro seeing yellow on 70 minutes, Dirksen added his second try of the night, walking the ball over the line, before Ashley Beck secured a winning bonus point on the last play of the game.

I agree, but why did he want to deny us a thrilling final? A 4 to 1 victory for Ospreys would have been fairer.

No doubt the best team won though! I do agree that Adam was about to be red carded for a second offence, but be fair and note the huge number of penalties that weren't given against Treviso, in the ruck, that should have been!

The ref was indecent. I want to launch a poll.

The ref was:

A) incompetent

B) patronising

C) biased

D) criminal

I go for D. He saved Ospreys from an embarassment. How he yellowed Favaro is a mistery. SHAME. SHAME. SHAME.

What about the professional foul by Adam Jones in the second half? Paterson was going to show him the yellow, and when he realised that it would be the second one, he let it go. SHAME. The Ospreys should have played 14 men for the rest of the game.

Instead, the ref let it go on and on the infringments against Treviso rolling maul, but, he didn't miss any chance to show yellow cards to Treviso players every time he could. Horrible refering. Horrible!

@damo - come off it - he gave both teams a hard time!! Take the crossing incident against Tipuric (only a blind and insane fool would have called that), and then there was the constant playing of the ball in the ruck by the Italians.

As for the Ospreys not being penalised at the ruck - watch the game again!

ospreys deserve to win the match, treviso didn't have their best game (burton so poor), the ref...also not him on the best night of his career...

For ospreys to win with Patterson is a bonus in itself.

He is one of the worst refs on the circuit.

How he never carded Treviso for scrum offeces is bixarre.

What was it 10 scrum PK's to the Ospreys, who drove them backwards at nearly every scrum, and why doesn't he play advantage when there is scrum PK?

On most occasions, the ball was available to be used.

At least they will not get himagain in the pools tages, and he doesn't get picked for the later stages, if they are good enough to get there.

Need to improve on this, as they left a few tries out there tonight.

The sloppy lineout just before the half, and poor driving close to the line, two examples.

But happy with the result.

Referee: Neil Paterson ???????????????????????????????????????

I support Munster and am totally unbiassed but WTF???

This lad was watching blatant foul play cosistently through the game and his decisions were unreal!!!

If Ospreys didn't score the last try I think he would have swan dived over the line for them and given them the bonus point, needs to be looked into, his award of the final penalty to Ospreys on Treviso scrum was lightening fast, and then they went off their feet from every ruck and nothing :)

Well the forwards definatly won this match for the Ospreys, had to survie a fught back from Treviso ,but in the end got back on top and deserved the victory. But it at least shows Trviso are now competative ,and you never know the return game come be even trickier for the Ospreys .
