Pumas at home: An ideal way to conclude the Rugby Championship

Smite me, O Mighty Smiter. It never rains but it pours. Just a couple of feelings possibly going through the thought process of Robbie Deans.

There have been injuries, an off-field critique by one of his players and a former Australia boss fuming that a New Zealander at the helm "is ridiculous". Despite all of this, a second-placed finish might well occur when the full-time whistle is blown. Silver would mean gold in my opinion.

To add some perspective, let us list some key players he is missing due to ailments: James O'Connor, James Horwill, Wycliff Palu, David Pocock, Lachlan Turner, Stephen Moore, Will Genia, Scott Higginbotham, Sekope Kepu and Christian Lealiifano are just a handful currently sidelined while it is worth a mention that Kurtley Beale and Tatafu Polota-Nau are either continuing on the road back from niggles or battling with an ongoing struggle with knocks. What's remarkable is their veteran lock, Nathan Sharpe, remains injury-free - even more remarkable is that he has 32 percent of the XVs total caps this weekend!

Argentina named an unchanged XV to face them. Was coach Santiago Phelan trying to rub it in?

So to say they've been in a tight spot is an understatement. Now, how do they get out of it? A "Honey Badger" could help. On his 25th birthday, Nick Cummins finally makes the cut for an Australian XV. Those unfamiliar with the earlier reference, I guess brace yourself for this.

Cummins is deserving of a call-up after impressively powerful performances for the Force during the tail end of the Super Rugby season and is joined in the backline by Reds outside centre Ben Tapuai, who forms a new-look midfield partnership with Pat McCabe. Direct, yes, but it is a decent combination. Beale remains at 10 and another solid shift - following Kepu and Drew Mitchell's recent views - may help the ARU with the Quade Cooper predicament.

The surprise move in the pack comes on the blindside as - after giving Dave Dennis plenty of minutes - Deans has chosen to hand Sitaleki Timani the 6 jersey in a move he puts down to being similar to that of adding Cummins - Australia want to match power with power.

"As with the backs, we have looked to increase our physicality to counter the direct force that will undoubtedly be coming the other way," stated Deans when announcing his line-up.

Does that mean the Wallabies are going to keep things tight, in a similar gameplan to that of the Springboks when they visited the tournament new-boys? If so then the Pumas will no doubt be licking their lips at that prospect as their bruising pack in front of two settled half-backs may have the edge. Make no mistake, this week's visitors to Argentina will not play with the same fluidity that the All Blacks displayed in their seven-try success in La Plata.

I must confess that when the Rugby Championship schedule was released in May, this game immediately caught the eye as it just screamed upset win. What wasn't known then was the injury hand Australia were about to be dealt and also that Rodrigo Roncero would be talked out of Test retirement. Because of those ingredients being thrown into the Rosario melting pot, it is understandable that many bookmakers have struggled to split these two.

That has been the consensus of many offering a prediction this week but not that of our readers, with the masses having Argentina sneaking it to end a 15-year drought. We should not forget just how close they came to breaking that run at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast a few rounds ago as they let 13 points slip in the last quarter. Surely this is their moment.

Ones to watch:

For Argentina: Last weekend's early linebreak from Lucas Amorosino was special and something we had been waiting for all Rugby Championship from him. Since starting their opening game of the tournament, against South Africa at Newlands, the Montpellier runner was then demoted to bench duty. However, head coach Santiago Phelan gave him another shot a fortnight ago and the full-back has not let his boss down. Against the Wallabies it's predicted he will have opportunities to roam so watch this Pumas back-three as we hope for tries in the Rosario finale. Also, how can we not keep one eye on the man bidding farewell to the Pumas. Rugby salutes one of its great servants. Hats off to prop Rodrigo Roncero.

For Australia: From one veteran international to another. 34-year-old second-row forward Nathan Sharpe leads the Wallabies into what is going to be a passionate clash in front of a partisan crowd. With close to a third of the total caps his XV possesses, much responsibility will be on the lock's shoulders to keep his colleagues cool in the hot atmosphere of Estadio Gigante de Arroyito. Sharpe has spoken well during the week about character defining this injury-hit squad but with a week of travel behind them, do the Wallabies have enough in the tank both physically and mentally? Western Force's Nick Cummins will be exciting to watch.

Head-to-head: The battle between wings Horacio Agulla and Nick Cummins should be excellent entertainment on Saturday as both love to carry in different styles. Agulla likes to find holes while Cummins is pound for pound a destructive and dynamic figure. Meanwhile Marcelo Bosch will be keen to get the upper hand on Ben Tapuai in terms of shutting down his space and limiting the returning Wallaby outside centre's confidence early in the piece.

Recent results:

2012: Australia won 23-19 on Gold Coast
2003: Australia won 24-8 in Sydney
2002: Australia won 17-6 in Buenos Aires
2000: Australia won 32-25 in Canberra
2000: Australia won 53-6 in Brisbane

Prediction: Travel, a draining day at Loftus and injuries. It had to be Argentina by 3!

The teams:

Argentina: 15 Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino, 14 Gonzalo Camacho, 13 Marcelo Bosch, 12 Santiago Fernandez, 11 Horacio Agulla, 10 Juan Martin Hernandez, 9 Martin Landajo, 8 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (c), 7 Juan Manuel Leguizamon, 6 Julio Farias Cabello, 5 Patricio Albacete, 4 Manuel Carizza, 3 Juan Figallo, 2 Eusebio Guinazu, 1 Rodrigo Roncero.
Replacements: 16 Agustin Creevy, 17 Juan Pablo Orlandi, 18 Leonardo Senatore, 19 Tomas Leonardi, 20 Nicolas Vergallo, 21 Nicolás Sánchez, 22 Juan Imhoff.

Scrumpoacher, yes I was trolling, but looking for a reaction from Trinats, who at present likes to knock all things Kiwi, including your coach.

A agree the Wallabies are having a horrible year, and no side would compete, with the list of top class players that have injures.

However, the rantings of Cooper have done little to help your boys, and his lunacy should have been stamped upon 18 months ago.

Unfortunately, the jibe was aimed at an Aussie other than yourself..

I wonder how much LP´s confidence has recovered from last Sat´s bashing. I hope

they show the same strength of character as in the earlier matches. If not, WB´s

might win despite all the injuries.

It's going to be a tough challenge, no doubt however I believe we have the players and capability to win nonetheless. Wallabies by 5.

bokbevok has an excellent point. To make it competitive, lets have a four nations with SA, Argentina and New Zealand with the 6 Nations being a promotion / relegation pool for the 4th spot. The wobblies can go play in the second teir to make up the numbers in the 6 nations while Wales come in for now.

@kiwilad great idea, actually why don't they get rid of all internationals v ab's and just have them playing with themselves ;-) as no one is worthy? Get over yourself buddy-a horror year for the wallabies (and SA) also a better than expected start for Argentina and you want to bring in wholesale changes? Troll...

Argentina should pull this one off, Australia very exposed up front and I can't see them going the distance (unless they are allowed a 15 man bench). Really don't understand all the moaning from the Aussie supporters, your form has been poor through super rugby - very lucky to make it into the last spot of the top 6. Fail to see what Deans has got to do with that, the poor man has very little to work with from the start.

@Trinats2, This is what you get for being so vocal. When everything goes pear shaped, you will just have to find someone / something to blame instead of just looking at the cause and going about fixing it.

Stop whining and take it like a man!

@trinats

Cooper best player ever, how would he be that he only has a good season every 3 or

4 years. He can,t tackle and kicking game is not up to scratch. What position does he play, I believe he has spent more time on bench or crocked than on the field.

I think his new position is water boy.

I suppose we could go back to the Trinations, leaving Aussie out of it, with Injuries and lunatics, its getting hard for them to field a team.

As it is they have to import players and coaches, leaving not much Australian about the Wobblies.

Ozinlondon:

You're no fun ! You must be a Mexican !

The excuses were a cut and paste from this article !(under prediction) as a wind up, I also added Jubes cause it winds certain people up her !!!

It would be no fun if I came on here and said we have underperformed this year adn Deans has done well with what he has to work with, but there would be no "knee jerk reaction" and i'd find that as boring as Deans game plan (again a wind up) !!! Yes deans has done well, but he is a Kiwi and great fun to put the blame on. Have a go at all the kiwis getting fired up, yet they didn't want him as their coach !!! I honestly think Deans has lost the confidence of the team from his poor player management (not just Cooper) and he does need to go or a huge change. As for Cooper, he has the talent to be the best ever (I have seen him play long before the Reds and Wallabies) but he is an arrogant little poop and that's his downfall.

I know there are no excuses (even injuries) as the history books don't show it. I have been very disappointed this year with Reds and Wallabies results but at the end of the day I sit down with my Kiwi mates and saffa bro in laws and have a beer/rum and a joke/wind up. So maybe you should read between the lines and lighten up or give it heaps to the Kiwi cheats !!! (again a wind up) Sometimes my joking is not picked up on here, hence adding in "!!!"

I do here you and will give it a rest, and try a new approach, unlike Deans !!!

Hope Wallabies win well, even if it means Deans keeps his job !!!

PR ... please get your facts right. S. Kepu is not a key player and should not be mentioned among the keys. His performance is always close to zero.

Did anybody notice against Pumas.... clown in blue N.Sharpe during every break in play always had his hands on the hips. He was also, always the last player to retreat into the defensive line. At Test level, I have not seen a player and coach worst than Blunt-man Sharpe and Kiwi joker R. Deans.

Now D. Dennis is on the bench after starting every game and also being invisible too. R. Deans is a loser coach because I don't see Wallabies having a third and fourth blindside flanker.

Win or lose, lets kick R. Deans hard up the arse and send him back Kiwiland.

Trinats

Give it a rest buddy. 4 excuses (only one of which - injuries - is possibly valid) before the balls even been kicked. Stop embarrassing us.

And could you give it a rest about Deans too?? You're like Alan Jones on Julia Gillard. You may have a point about some things but your constant carry on dilutes any point you have.

Deans has had the Wallas ranked No 2 for several years. He has defeated SA more than any Aus coach (including twice in SA). He's had good wins away from home. He's beaten the current Grand Slam champions many times in a row. He won the 3Ns last year. He deserves praise for those achievements along with the players who did the job on the field.

He has also had some shocking results as well and he should take the blame for that along with the players who performed so poorly.

But right now he is being harangued and criticised by people like you because (and you may not want to admit this) (1) Aus is not as good as NZ at rugby and (2) his team has performed poorly after suffering a shocking injury toll and he has no quality back up.

People are talking up Link McKenzie (who is a good coach). But let's remember (1) he didn't achieve what he wanted to at NSW, (2) he failed in France, (3) he took over at the Reds after a handful of his young stars had just had a season of international rugby under Deans, (4) he has done well at the Reds but... (5) he has just had a very poor season because of (TA DA) injuries, only made the finals on default and then proceeded to lose a semi final AT HOME after moving arguably the best HB in the world to FH when he had a reserve FH on the bench.

On what basis do you say with any confidence that Link would do better than Deans? If anyone can answer that question I'll accept that sacking Deans more than just a knee jerk reaction by unrealisitic idiots.

@Trinats2, you would think by now after 100 years of losing because all refs out the get the Wollibies, that they would have found a way to overcome that handicap. For example get a Captain who apparently "Cheats" but gets the ref on his side. Pretty smart eh!

Anyway I think the Wollibies have a great coach and will have a game plan to win this one by 6

Trinats2, the Chiefs also lost to the Highlanders, Hurricanes and Crusaders, among others possibly, I cannot remember. Injuries are there for every team, however it's only a select few who use it as an excuse, especially after saying they're going to win all season and then failing miserably. 18 points, we shall see, but I wouldn't be trusting that magic 8-ball of yours any longer, maybe your wife should advise you about sport from now on. And next time your 2 10s get injured, hopefully a 12 or 15 gets put in there instead of a 9, that way would we be free of your excuses? ;)

Well Argentina should win this one ,but i dont thinkit will be as easy as people think.Deans has managed to put out what looks to be a decent 15 if not top class. My concern isnt the wallaby backs ,its their toothless forwards, who at Loftus where incapable of securing any type of ball.If they play like that again ,im afaid Argentina will have a field day.,and win by 15+ points.Hopefully they wont play crap, and it will be a hard fought close game .But i still feel Argentina will win but by 6-9 points.Whatever the result win or lose Deans will still have done a good job given the circumstances 33% or 50% wining percentage is good imo

ruckingkiwi:

Yep. And Reds (mostly Wallabies) were looking good until hit with injuries !!! Reds even trashed the Chiefs (who went on to win it)

It's very tough when you lose 2 x No10s in a game and your 9 has to fill the gap !! and that happen a couple of times this season !!!

Reds (and Wallabies) will be back next year.
