Hawke's Bay hat-trick: Gillies Kaka

Hawke's Bay pulled off a last-gasp 42-41 ITM Cup win over Bay of Plenty after replacement back Ihaia West scored a converted try three minutes into injury time.

A whopping 11 tries were produced - six to Hawke's Bay (including a penalty try) and five to the Steamers - in the 'Battle of the Bays' with Gillies Kaka picking up a hat-trick for the home side.

The Steamers, who were in front for the majority of the match, thought they had the game in the bag after replacement Chris Noakes slotted over a penalty to extend his side's lead to six points (41-35) with six minutes remaining.

However, the hosts never gave up and capped off a highly entertaining spectacle with a superb try at the death to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

Following two three-pointers from Magpies pivot Dan Waenga, Steamers flanker Sam Cane burrowed over from close range after 12 minutes for the opening try of the match.

Hawke's Bay hit back through a sensational try from Kaka - showing pace, agility and withering soccer skills - to score from 70m out that will go down as one of the tries of the season.

The visitors then crossed for two quickfire tries to fly-half Nick McCashin and winger Maru Henry - the second thanks to a superb run and offload from Cane, who released by the All Blacks to get game-time before departing with the Test squad for Argentina.

The home side then were awarded a penalty try just before half-time, with opposition skipper Tanerau Latimer yellow-carded for pulling down a maul.

But despite being a man down, the Steamers built what looked like a comfortable lead after Lelia Masaga and Phil Burleigh added their name to the scoresheet to give their team a handy 38-23 lead.

But Hawke's Bay hit back when flanker Tevita Fomai scored then Kaka grabbed his third five-pointer before West produced his killer blow.

This year's ITM Cup has become strangely international (and I like it) with some new arrivals. Northland has Dan Caprice (England Sevens), Manawatu has Eric Fry (USA 2011 RWC), Otago has halfback Fumiaka Tanaka and hooker Shota Horie (both Japan 2011 RWC), Counties has Daniel Adongo (Blue Bulls), Tasman has Peter Betham (2013 Waratahs), North Harbour has Salesi Manu (Aust, Force), Hawkes Bay has Johan Schoonbee (Natal)

@Carpelone here goes.

The Blues: Northland North Harbour and Auckland. Auckland a premiership team the other two Championship teams.

The Chiefs Counties Manukau Championship team , Thames Valley Heartland Team, Waikato Premiership team, Bay Of Plenty Premiership team and King Country Heartland team.

Hurricanes East Coast, Poverty Bay both Heartland teams, Hawkes Bay Premiership, Wairarapa Bush, Wanganui, Horowhenua Heartland teams, Manawatu Championship and Wellington Premiership.

Crusaders Tasman, amalgamation of Nelson and Marlborough, Championship, Canterbury Premiersip, Buller, West Coast, Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury all Heartland teams.

Highlanders North Otago Heartland team, Otago and Southland both Championship teams.

When Super Rugby first started it was usual for the players to come from those areas within the franchise but the Highlanders needed propping up with imports because of their low population base. However now players are selected from anywhere depending on who the coach wishes to select although the bulk of the players could come from the area within the franchise. This doesnt apply much to the two South Island teams as more come from without the Highlanders area and the Crusaders are out trolling all NZ for the best players for their franchise from all over NZ. examples are the Whitelock brothers from Manawatu, Kieran Read from Counties Manukau, as was Casey Laulala's brother. Dagg and Guildford from Hawkes Bay, Sean Maitland Waikato, Tom Donnelly from Bay of Plenty Richie McCaw from North Otago, Robbie Fruean Wellington Ross Kennedy also born Wellington plying for Hawkes Bay, Corey Flynn Southland, But it would be fir to say all franchises now have many players from without their area.

Hope that helps you Carpelone.

Where are they based?

I know that the franchises group some of them, I was wondering if by belonging to a province you "belong" to a specific franchise. If I am not wrong the Hurricanes group Wellington and Taranaki, but I am mentioning by heart, I could be easily mistaken.

Carpelone - too easy. Each Super franchaise is made up of provinces. Chiefs for example consist of: Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country (Colin Meads province), Thames Valley. Some of them provinces like Bay of Plenty and Waikato play in the ITM Cup, others like King Country Rams and Thames Valley Swamp Foxes play in eeh Heartland Comp. They play outside the respective comps too - this year King Country played Taranaki (ITM level side), as did Wanganui (Heartland Comp). ITM comp sides are semi professional, the Heartland are amateurs who work normal jobs all week, and play for their province on Saturdays! Shame Planet Rugby don't yet show the Heartland comp results.

@Carpelone no the ITM provinces have names that represent the provinces, some quite old. Such as Waikato is Mooloo the Cow, Taraanaki Ferdinand the Bull, Hawkes Bay Magpies (Black and White), Bay of Plenty (The Steamers), Counties Manukau the Steelers, Manawatu the Turbos, Tasman the Makos, Northland the Taniwhas, Southland the Rams, Canterbury the Lambs (lol), Wellington Leo the Lion (Lions) Forgotten the Auckland used to be the Auks but probably everyone calls them Jaffas now. North Harbour umm so bloody poor nobody cares so probably Nancy Boys and Otago I think they are now known as the Bankrupts or Dole Bludgers, as they take the NZRFU handouts denied to other Unions.

Nothing to do with the Super teams who have their own names. Hope this helps.

What a most enjoyable game to watch to see these teams running the ball at every opportunity makes this competition very entertaining to watch. Yes this is a step below Super Rugby and the defence lines are not so developed but it is very entertaining.

The trialling of the new laws on not being able to hold the ball in the back of the maul or ruck more than five seconds when it is available is speeding up the game. I also believe the crouch touch set is a success, unless you have Taranaki Ref Richard Kelly calling it in slow motion as he does. There are other trials but these two are really good. As long as someone winds up Kelly and gets him to call it quicker cos at the moment HE is ohhhhhhhhhh soooooooooo sloooooooooooow.

Oh hang on just seen the team sheet for hawke's bay, P Borlase at tight head , My guess is they don't have a good scrum?.

ITM rugby seems very entertaining.

Can somebody explain me the province system (in the table, I see Otago, Waikato etc and than I read that they have also other names) and its relation with SR franchises?

Thanks
