New Zealand opened their Rugby Championship account with a 27-19 win over Australia at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Saturday.
In a tale of two halves in an overall scrappy game, the All Blacks did enough in the opening forty minutes of the match to bag four competition points as they kicked off the inaugural championship with a hard-fought victory.
The world champions raced to a commanding lead after scoring 18 unanswered points which left the Wallabies with a mountain to climb.
However, the hosts clawed their way back after trailing 18-10 at half-time and continued to stay in touch with their trans-Tasman rivals who had to work a little harder in the second half before Dan Carter sealed the deal with his fifth penalty goal on full-time.
Carter's three-pointer after the siren also denied the Wallabies a losing bonus point, which could prove vital in the overall standings later down the line.
Australia drew first blood after Berrick Barnes opened the scoring with an early penalty with barely three minutes gone on the clock, before Carter leveled matters in the 10th minute.
Three minutes later the All Blacks struck from a scrum outside Australia's 22. Two decoy runners in midfield allowed Carter to feed full-back Israel Dagg who stepped out of a tackle and then beat Kurtley Beale on the outside to score the opening try. Carter added the tricky conversion and the All Blacks were smiling with a seven-point lead (3-10) after 14 minutes played.
Australia were found wanting again after New Zealand's relentless pressure and masterly forwards overwhelmed their hosts who coughed up another penalty that Carter dualy converted into three more points.
Whilst the visitors' attack was giving the Wallabies a throbbing headache, so too was the All Blacks defence as Robbie Deans' troops hammered at New Zealand's tryline in a bid to narrow the ever-increasing scoreline but to no avail.
A dropped pass by Scott Higginbotham with Australia hot on attack and then another by Beale didn't help matters for the Wallabies either - the moans and groans from the home crowd becoming a regular feature.
The well-oiled black machine continued to rumble forward and with the Australians' defence once again stretched, Cory Jane finished off superbly in the corner for the world champs' second try of the night - Beale once again exposed out wide.
Carter's conversion missed by inches, but his team-mates wouldn't have been too concerned with an 18-3 lead. However, the same couldn't be said of their hosts, who looked down and out with eight minutes of the first half still remaining.
Finally, Australia struck gold when Digby Ioane made the intitial inroads after the wing found a chink in the All Blacks' armour only to be tackled inches short of the line. Nathan Sharpe wasn't to be denied from close range though, and the soon-to-be retired lock powered over. Barnes converted and the hosts headed into the half-time sheds with some restored confidence.
The second half became a battle of the boots as Carter and Barnes exchanged penalties. But, even after drawing the second half 9-9, the Wallabies weren't able to bridge the gap.
The result also means Richie McCaw and his merry men have taken a giant stride towards holding onto the Bledisloe Cup which has been in their possession since 2003.
Man of the match: All Blacks flanker Liam Messam repaid his coaches' faith by carrying his impressive Super Rugby form to the Test arena, while halfback pair Aaron Smith and Dan Carter proved once again to be a lethal combination. But the player who stood head and shoulders above the rest was Israel Dagg. The star full-back caused havoc whenever he touched the ball, bagged a try for his efforts and set up another.
Moment of the match: You just can't keep a good Dagg down! With only centimetres to work with, Dagg's 13th-minute touchdown after skinning his opposite number on the outside takes the cake.
Villain of the match: Despite an improved second half from Australia, they were unable to atone for Kurtley Beale's critical blunders in what was an error-prone performance by the full-back who will carry some self-inflicted psychological damage to Eden Park after letting in both of New Zealand's tries.

McCaw was awesome today.Best game from him for a couple of years and my man of the match just ahead of Dagg.
McCaw was like an energiser bunny today... and his ball-carrying has gone to another level!

Someone please tell the Wallabies you have to play the entire game! The two tries were simply pathetic. Made the ABs look a lot better than they actually are. If they put so many men in the rucks, unless you get quick ball you have to match them. Deans must go. McCaw is no sportsman at all, disgusting. I just learnt that you don't have to roll away from a collapsed maul: is that true?

Allain Rolland...aaaaargh!!!! Somebody please sack this useless, egocentric, pedantic waste of space!! He was shocking for Australia...he was shocking for the AB's and worst of all he was shocking for the beautiful game of rugby!!!

was kinda scrappy but Dagg and Messam had a good game. Watching Smith's passing and the speed of the passes kinda made me forget about Kerr-Barlow.
Aus had me on the edge of my seat in the 2nd half and you can only think that they will be tougher next week...and hopefully so will the All Blacks!

Game never got going in terms of phases, which is really rare for a Bledisloe test. Probably should of expected a fair bit of rust first up though.
Mealamu was epic, best loose foward on the pitch haha & Dagg was easily the pick of the backs, beautiful goose step for the opening try.
Barnes was just plain old Barnes, I've always felt comfortable with him in the 10 jersey as an AB's supporter. No doubt Cooper will be starting next week, Deans won't even have a choice.
The Wallabies decision making in their on 22 was very poor, that's the type of overconfidence I'd usually expect from the AB's. The AB's decision making was spot on, every time I was barking instructions through the telly they did exactly what I asked.
Very important win both in the context of TRC & Bledisloe. I hope the men in black can wrap up the big boy next week.

Thank you NZ 0-21 doubled my money (actually 0-7, 8-14, 15-20) , after a big day up the hill just needed NZ to win and we're dancing. On rugby terms, comfortable win, pity the referee blew so much, both teams may have decided to play a little more, seemed to be a catch 22. Easy win though, pity the Springboks arent next week!

Thank you! R. Deans (0/10), N.Sharpe (0/10), S. Kepu (0/10), D.Dennis (0/10), D. Pocock (1/10), A.A. Cooper (1/10) and K. Beale (1/10). Game lost in the opening 20mins when ABs put 18 unanswered points. During this period N.Sharpe and S.Kepu were at their liability-best. Both combining for about 15 errors and poor team paid the prize. Surprising to see both hopeless players playing full 80 minutes. Does R. Deans need to be reminded what substitute players are there for? M. Hooper not used, D. Mitchell not used and R. Simmons not used as well. Who needs N.Sharpe and S. Kepu. ARU time to sack R. Deans now. Wallabies had possession but no combination or set-move to show for. Very disappointing result at home.

Robbies head to be on the chopping block from the ARU by the time i wake up in the morning...

Rolland was awful. Penalising the AB's for going off their feet at a ruck, when they'd smashed the ruck, so it didn't exist. Then there was the crossing without crossing call, that simply looked like an illegal tackle (without the ball and high) on Nonu. Fortunately the gulf in class was considerable, and the right team won, but frankly 15-20 points was the gulf. Cooper and O'Connor need to return. Was Dave Dennis on the pitch - just didn't notice him! Worst game for Beale for sometime. Sadly not Rolland's worst performance - he's permanently ****!

While both teams werent at their greatest, Aussie were just that much worse.
They should kicking themselves for their handling errors in the first half. They looked good in parts when they speed the ball up but it didn't do it enough.
Mealamu was brilliant tonight as was Dagg. Was interesting to see the lack of use of SBW and Nonu to free up the outside backs which turned out to be a good thing.
I have to say tonight Mccaw got away with murder. While he did get penalised a few times he got have got alot more. And this is coming from a hardcore Abs supporter. i can see why some teams get so frustrated with him. But hey if you get away with it...

Wow
Positives for Australia they kept it close playing bad.
Negative the ABs were rusty.
The ABs looked comfortable and even when it was close they looked happy to play offensive defence.
Have to remember this was an away game as well.

Well a very enjoyable opening game ,but it went as expected ,the ABs didnt get out of 3rd gear imo but still manged to dminate most of the match .The frightening thing is as renowned slow starters they will be even better next week.Australia really battled and at ties looked like they could make a game of it ,and all credit to them for it,but still a long ways behind NZ in overall class ,and im afraid it told in the end

Game of all sorts. But I can see the Wallabies posing a real threat to SA and Argentina. ABs just had that edge today.
