Sharks book flight to Hamilton

28th July 2012 15:00

Louis Ludik Sharks

Try time: Louis Ludik

The Sharks became the first team to win at Newlands in 2012, beating the Stormers 26-19 in Saturday's Super Rugby semi-final in Cape Town.

They must now travel to Hamilton to face the Chiefs as they continue their quest to become the first team in the history of the tournament to win three consecutive knock-out games on the road.

For the Stormers, the result represents their third home defeat at the semi-final stage.

The Sharks led 13-6 at the interval thanks to a try from Louis Ludik and a drop goal from Fred Michalak.

JP Pietersen's try on the hour mark meant that Gio Aplon's touchdown was too little, too late for the hosts.

Like they did last week in Brisbane, the Sharks built a solid lead and then showed tremendous heart on defence to hold on as the home side scrambled desperately for the try that would level matters.

In the end, the Stormers' lack of invention on attack was shown up while an uncharacteristically high error-count and poor tactical kicking did them no favours.

The Sharks took the field with a team featuring significant alterations to the back-line that had been announced during the week. Ludik moved to the wing to accommodate the inclusion of Riaan Viljoen at full-back while Pietersen was shifted into midfield.

They proved to be crucial changes as the players involved produced both tries.

Peter Grant opened the scoring in the seventh minute from the tee but the Sharks would have been less concerned about the three points conceded than the condition of Bismarck du Plessis, who was seeing stars after taking a savage hit from Eben Etzebeth.

The visitors would have been reassured however when their scrum earned a penalty five minutes later and Michalak could level the scores before the little Frenchman put the visitors ahead with a neat drop goal at the end of the first quarter.

Jean de Villiers came close to scoring but was held up by Willem Alberts. Not much seemed to be going the Stormers' way.

Ludik landed a crucial blow when he plucked Viljoen's high ball out the air and beat three defenders to score. Michalak's conversion left the Sharks leading 13-3 but Grant landed a penalty on the stroke of half-time to keep the Stormers in touch.

Michalak and Grant then swapped penalties after the resumption to leave the Sharks 16-9 ahead, before the visitors crossed for what would prove to be the decisive try.

Pietersen was put into space, stepped Grant, and ghosted home, with Michalak booting the conversion to make it 23-9.

That looked to be the game for the Sharks, but the home side staged a brave recovery with Aplon reducing the deficit when he finished off a move he started to score the Stormers' only try.

Grant added the conversion and he then brought the Stormers within four points with a straightforward penalty in the 73rd minute.

However, the hosts could not get any closer and Michalak's second drop-goal ensured the Sharks will contest their fourth final after those of 1996, 2001 and 2007.

Man of the match: A mention for JP Pietersen who was deadly but the official gong went to Fred Michalak, who pulled all the right strings and finished with 16 points.

Moment of the match: The Stormers were already struggling but when JP Pietersen scored the Sharks' second try the hosts' fate was sealed.

Villain of the match: Plenty of chirps were hurled, but nothing more than a handbag was landed.

The scorers:

For the Stormers:

I'm a huge Steve Walsh fan and have run touch for him before, great guy!, but did anyone else notice that the Sharks lingered behind every ruck and mall and never got called for not releasing in the tackle. I was surprised that they got away with it as much as they did. A couple of times it resulted in the Stormers being called for not releasing the ball. A little disappointed in his performance this week.

No real surprise, considering the mediocrity which abounds SH rugby, that the MoM was from the NH.

Which one, they played four games (quarters) in the one ! Reds had it comfortably with their main (reserve grade) players in, turned pear shape when they came off and left it to the academe and school boys...

Well I did not see this coming!! I called the Chiefs and honestly thought the Sharks will lose by 5 - just shows you what can happen. I think the defensive minded Stormers inability to score points came back to bite them but they had a great season none-the-less given all their injuries.

As for the Sharks - perhaps this is their season, peaking at the right time! It is gonna be a cracker but I honestly think that the travel will get to the Sharks but then again I said that last week and the week before!

What was the score in the Friendly this year between the Reds and the Hurricanes?

Two completely different semis but both enthralling. Well done Sharks you deserved the win you turned up and played the rugby and I'm so glad the Stogy Stormers are nowhere near the final. Why oh why do so many Saffa teams kick the ball away or hoof the ball downfield when there are players outside the kicker? Still awaiting to hear the final word from Martin Marais, where are you Martin? Im hoping for a Chief's win in Hamilton but would not write off the Shark's ability to take it. There are many factors to consider in this game and I'm sure it will be a close fought game and one worthy of a final.

@georgesmith: 'Chiefs wil go ol the way and SBW wil become the greatest'

Poor Sonny Bill. I won't wish an entire match day squad going 'all the way' on anyone.

I can see where you are trying to go, but Reds beat the sad-ers in the round robin and the pre-season, and the year before and the year previous !!! And the sharks didn't have a problem with jet lag in Briso or in cape town.

Maybe jet lag only happens from CHC, it explains their lost last week !!!

What is it about SAFFER rugby that they love to kick the ball away? If the Sharks adopt the same game plan against the Chiefs they will be annihilated. Chiefs/Crusaders semi was fantastic, can't say the same for the Stormers/Sharks & thats coming from a Saffer!

Back in early Feb I met an English tourist who to my total surprise tipped the Chiefs for the title. I wonder if he put any money on? How many on here thought they would be favs for the final back then? Not me, but I am delighted anyway.

Bummer missed out by one point ! Hope you were on it Justice4 !

Viva Le Sharks !!!! Well done Sharks. It will be a huge ask to travel back across the pond again and turn up again. Everyone will write them off. Still I think they can do it, they're on a roll and can see them with their quick recycle ball, exploit SWB poor league style defence and they'll find gaps.

Sharks 38 - Chiefs 27.That is of course if there is a Saffa (Durban born) ref !!!

And a French player to beat (whoops, be the better side, just not on the refs score board) a kiwi side in a final in NZ for the second year in a row.

Well done the Sharks.... and what a story tale finish this would be should they win their third knock out game on the road. It would be great to see such a group of 'quiet acheivers' win the Super title. But it will not be easy... the Chiefs have played very well indeed this year.... especially on Friday!

The Final should be an absolute cracker.

I only hope all the travel does not hinder the Sharks, as it did the Saders last year.

It would be a shame to have the tournament decided by jetlag two years in a row.

The two packs will bash each other up, the backlines attempt to cut each other to pieces, a mouthwatering prospect..

GO Chiefs!!!

Well done Sharks!! Jetlagged? The Stormers looked like they were the ones doing all the travelling.

Impressive showing by the Sharks, I think they still have a chance to win and they shouldnt be written off. I remember seeing posters in the preview who were pissed off, that PR tipped the Sharks to win lol

I would love to see my Chiefs lift the title but I wouldnt mind it if it was the Sharks they lost to. But nonetheless, it is going to be an Epic final with two of the best attacking teams.

JP Pieterson is awesome...for some reason I didn't really think he was any good til this year

Im gutted to say it BUT if the Chiefs cant put away the TRIPLE jetlagged Sharks this next weekend then they truly dont deserve to be anywhere near that trophy....

No way the Sharks can keep putting this kind of intensity out weekend after weekend with such debilitating side effects.

Well done Sharks, you've been knocking on the door since 1996 so it's good to see you back in the mix. Good luck next week.
