Tied game in Port Elizabeth

Owen Farrell South Africa v England third test

Late missed effort: Owen Farrell

England put in a spirited performance to deny the Boks a series whitewash as the two sides played out a 14-14 draw in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Owen Farrell did have a chance to snatch victory for the visitors but missed terribly to the left with a drop-goal from 35 metres out as the June series ended 2-0 to the side wearing green and gold.

But there were plenty of positives for England to take home as this was a much-improved effort against a team that went backwards from Jo'burg. One being Thomas Waldrom, Tom Johnson and Danny Care's performances on the tour finale.

It was evident that England were fired up for this final Test as they looked to salvage something from what has been a tough and physical June. They managed to transfer that fire into points too early on as good phase play led to Toby Flood opening the scoring from the tee on two minutes.

Morne Steyn did respond five minutes later when England infringed at a ruck before the visitors illustrated their intent at the other end soon after. Care was the main man making the noise in his comeback game on the Test stage as he chose to tap a penalty quickly and burrowed over from close range. Care's decision was a bold statement but one that paid off as England continued to keep the passionate supporters at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium quiet.

Flood missed the extras and that proved to be his last act of the game on twelve minutes as he struggled to shake off a niggling issue. England's loss of their fly-half was cushioned by the fact the tourists had started much better than last week, assuming an 8-3 advantage.

However, they would not score again in the first-half as when lock Tom Palmer slowed down possession at a ruck, Steyn stepped up to bring the Boks back to within one point. He would strike again on 28 minutes when Stuart Lancaster's outfit was caught offside to begin a long spell of home attacks. England stood firm though and it was clear their steeliness was causing frustration to their hosts, who were missing Willem Alberts and Frans Steyn.

Lancaster would have been pleased with the pride being shown by his players in their last game of the season, but maybe not with Dylan Hartley six minutes after Owen Farrell had pushed England back in front from the tee. Hartley was carded for slowing down the play.

Those ten minutes approaching the hour mark were always going to be critical in the game but it was to be once Hartley returned that South Africa had their moment. Following a series of runners testing the English defensive line five metres out, Ruan Pienaar moved the ball out where JP Pietersen was waiting to dive over for back-to-back tries in this series. Steyn missed the conversion which meant the scoreline was 14-11 with fifteen minutes to go.

Farrell did tie things up to set up a nail-biting finish which saw South Africa knock at the door before England survived and launched their own final throw of the dice for victory. However, Farrell's attempted match-winning drop-goal with the last kick of the game failed miserably.

Man-of-the-match: Mentions for the work that Gio Aplon, Marcell Coetzee and Tom Johnson got through, but England's Danny Care announced his return to the Test scene with a fine 80-minute effort. He was busy and most definitely got the better of Francois Hougaard.

Moment-of-the-match: It may seem harsh to single out a player but England lost something when Toby Flood was forced off with an injury. Owen Farrell kicked too much and thus cut down the threat the visitors had posed early on, which saw them score eight points.

Villain-of-the-match: The disappointing result for South Africa. How dare they take down the mood on absent Springbok centre Francois Steyn's big wedding day. A toast to 2-0?

pretty succesful tour for this new england squad. i was expecting three matches of blood bath. i was predicting to lose to SA today with a small margin, but a draw is much better

lots of things to build and improve upon

Draw is as bad as a loss. Apart from that barn-storming 20 minutes in the second test the Springboks played below average rugby against a very average England team. It's going to be a long, long season.

Absolutely pathetic, both sides. The rest of the N & S hemispheres would wipe the floor with both these sides.

Well done England - you played well. And smart. We didn't.

I don't know why on earth HM decided that we should revert to 10-man Bulls rugby... Maybe because of the weather? Maybe because there were so many Bulls in the 22? Either way, I would like to thank England for exposing what an outdated, one-dimensional approach this is... Hopefully HM can completely remove it as an option now...

And hopefully HM can now FINALLY realise that Morné Steyn is way past his sell-by date. I mean seriously, how bad must this guy get before they stop picking him!? In Super Rugby this season the best fly-halves were (in order) Johan Goose, Patrick Lambie, Peter Grant, Elton Jantjies - and then Morné Steyn... Yet Steyn was picked as the starting 10! HM also picked players like Flip vd Merwe, Werner Kruger, Wynand Olivier and a handful of other Bulls who didn't deserve to be there, who I complained about from the beginning - and who have now proven that they have nothing to offer.

This result was a blessing in disguise - because I very much doubt whether we'll see Morné Steyn and the other Bulls weak links in the team for the Rugby Championship... And hopefully we'll NEVER see the Boks trying to play 2007 Bulls rugby again.

Well done England - and thank you for exposing our weaknesses. You guys carry on playing with this attitude and you'll get far.

As for the Springboks - please learn the glaring lessons there are to be learned from this, so you can go into the Rugby Championship with the right players, approach and attitude.

And now, back to SUPER RUGBY!

STOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRMMEEEEEEEEERRS........!!!!!

A fair result really. South Africa really missed Steyn and Alberts as without their go forward ball and physical defence they were a different team. However, we must remember England had a lot of important players missing as well and we lost Flood early on in the match.

I was really impressed with the way England managed to change positions so much during that game and still hold out. I mean, I think Tuilagi changed position 4 times! Scrum was much better, though the lineout wasn't as solid. Haskell impressed today with some strong tackles and bring a real physicality. Tuilagi was back to his best, as was Care. Farrell still needs to kick less or kick better, it's a shame Flood got injured so early on as it would have been interesting to see if he could manage the game any better. I felt at the end they could have driven it with the forwards a bit more as we were making ground and there's always the chance you'll win a penalty. Joseph disappointed, but we should give him some time because he's such a talented player.

All in all, lots learnt on this tour. A great experience for a young side who now know where the bar is. Hopefully they will be able to push on from this and really compete come the November tests. Thanks to South Africa for hosting a really enjoyable series, they are always my favourite!

Not a bad result for an England side who are on the rise. We are very young and inexperienced in key areas but they've at least had to man up and take on some fine SA players. AB lead the way but we are not that far behind the likes of SA and Auss. I'd have like to have seen Lawes and Wood out there.

Well a very ghood game to watch ,and England imo, have had a very good tour .They have learnt a hell of alot ,and coped better today with the bokkes power game.Englands improvement continues ,and that more than anything (except a win lol)is what we english supporters wanted.Heres hoping they improve again this aurtum. For the Bokkes ,got to say they are looking very good overall, perhaps missing a bit of dynanism to really ram home the power game ,but it bodes well for the RC later this yearMaybe will even push the ABs..Though New Zealand look atm unstoppable ,but the bokkes should beat the walabies imho, and as for Argentina ,well whos knows atm ,going to be a hard game as always

Boks did not play well at all and will have a lot of sole searching to do. Based on the performance of the AB's in their game it sure looks like SA are not going to win the rugby championship series, unless they change tactics.

Well played England
