All Blacks demolish Ireland

23rd June 2012 08:02

Sonny Bill Williams try 2 v Ireland 2012

Two tries: Sonny Bill Williams

New Zealand bounced back from last week's close call in style with an impressive 60-0 hammering of Ireland in Hamilton on Saturday.

After the heartbreakingly narrow defeat of last week, Ireland were no match for the effervescent All Blacks, who scored four tries in the first 25 minutes and looked dangerous at every turn. Dominated at the tackle - most unlike the Irish - and shredded out wide, the Irish just could not muster the spirit or precision of last week and were plain annihilated.

Perhaps the most satisfying aspect for the ABs was the nilling, however. Tries have never been a problem for this generation, but the fact that Ireland not only didn't score, they had only one kick at goal and barely once got close to crossing the whitewash will be a source of immense pride to Richie McCaw and his men. Ireland's most promising-looking first-half attack ended in a mistake and an All Black try. The overall penalty count against the hosts was ridiculously low.

Within seven minutes New Zealand had the advantage, Sam Cane finishing off a sweeping move out right. On a quarter of an hour Aaron Cruden produced a dart and a brilliant offload to put Sonny Bill Williams through the gap for the second. On 20 minutes it was the Cruden-Williams axis again, this time on a well-timed switch. And on 24 minutes it was an Irish error - Brian O'Driscoll spilling an ill-directed switch pass from Paddy Wallace - that gifted the ball to Cruden. Cruden scorched away and the two Smiths, Conrad and Ben, combined on straight lines and soft hands to send Ben away in the corner. It was all that simple, all that devastating.

The loss of Cruden to injury - a possible worry for both the Chiefs and the All Blacks - stymied the attacking rhythm for a while but did little to change the domination. Beauden Barrett landed a penalty with the final act of the first half, with the penultimate act being a harsh yellow dished out to Rob Kearney for what looked to be a legitimate interception attempt.

Ireland thus spent the first ten minutes of the second half a man down and paid for it with two more tries, one a series of three inside offloads finished off by Cane under the posts, the other a magnificent 50m finish from Hosea Gear. Barrett could only convert one, but that left Ireland trailing 41-0 after 50 minutes; New Zealand were good value for their near point-a-minute ratio and the Irish body count was rising.

Kearney's return changed nothing. Cane slipped a super ball to Messam on an super line for what was New Zealand's 100th-ever try against Ireland. Barrett's indifferent form with the boot continued as a comparatively easy kick bounced off the uprights.

Williams showed a rare glimpse of his complete skill set with a well-judged opportunistic grubber deep for Israel Dagg to run in the eighth try on the hour mark, this time Barrett converting.

New Zealand kept attacking, although some handling errors began to creep in. Ireland looked to move from deeper and deeper, presumably playing right into the hosts' hands. A handling error ten minutes from time and super delay of the pass from Barrett saw Adam Thomson run a direct line home for try number nine.

Ireland rallied hard, determined to get something out of the game, but there was no change to be had. In minutes 79, Keven Mealamu's well-timed charge on Eoin Reddan saw the half-back spill the ball and that was that. Firmly that.

Man of the match: Aaron Cruden was putting in a good claim for this until he went off after 25 minutes, Sonny Bill Williams dominated the centres, but it was Sam Cane whose domination in the loose created the space for his team-mates outside, and brace of tries gave his side a commanding lead.

Moment of the match: The fourth try. As exciting as it was clinical, it was curtains for Ireland after that.

Villain of the match: He reffed well, but for a really poor moment of judgement, referee Romain Poite gets this for the yellow card he dished out to Rob Kearney. Brian O'Driscoll called it 'ridiculous'. He was right.

The scorers:

This was simply a pissed off AB's side wanting to atone for their game last week against a tired looking Irish.

Ireland just had no intensity whatsoever and just werent up for it after last weeks brilliant effort.

Posted before the game that i had doubts about mccaw at 8 but boy was I wrong. Messam too played his best game in the blacks jersey. Sam Cane continues to grow and even Romano stood up. Overall that was just a great performance.

One last thing. I really really hope SBW sticks with rugby. He is finally becoming a rugby player and not just a league convert. Can only get better which is a scary thought for the rest of the world.

That was just awesome. Someone asked during the week where would NZ be without Carter - well one World Cup Champions, but tonight we ended up without Cruden as well.

Some of that rugby, passing and handling in good conditions was outstanding.

Kimbriki likes to ignore any good play by NZ, and try and create and exaggerate any supposed NZ undoing. I can see a case for a penalty, but those type of fends happen all the time.

Last week Dagg was slated for a deserved yellow card and late charge - when he just jumped in the air for the charge. The Irish took out their frustration with yet another peice of foul play on McCaw when he was deliberately taken out in the air from a kick off, and I think the replay showed the Irish player was not looking at the ball, this was another magnitude of seriousness compared to Dagg incident. It was a penalty but deserved a yellow card.

Anyway the All Blacks are always too busy running the ball and playing at pace to get up to much foul play

Unbelievable performance from the AB's. Clinical open play, fast, excellent set pieces and brilliant kicking. Well done.

Sad to see Ireland play with such heart and come out scoreless. Ireland deserve applause too for never giving up.

Just shows the depth of quality stocks NZ has compared to rest of the world. Forget being world class, just take each number from 1 -22 and name the first choice player; at least half this side will not be in that list. Or maybe the new coaching staff are not sure who the best players are going by last week's result , LOL. Anyway the MIBs have made a statement before the 4 nations, which will be interesting given the performances of OZ, SA and Argentina recently.

However given the hammering Ireland received, one wonders if it is fair to use points based ranking system that hardly reflects the gulf in class among these teams.

You do have to question the point of these annual murderings the Irish are scheduled for against the All Blacks. We have only been competitive for one match out of three and even that was more down to The AB's having a rare off day. Romain Poite may have done what he could to stop the Irish scoring today but we can't otherwise complain about the disparity between the two sides from an officiating point of view. They are that good. We - frustratingly - are not as bad as these crazy scorelines suggest. Poite's performance was like that of the hyena who smells blood, happy to join in the feasting on that slaughtered by others.

@ trinats

I would like your opinion of the game and especially Sonny Bill, dont give your normal negative bollocks but give your honest view of both as a rugby supporter.

Kimbriki - non-cited thuggery? would that be the Ireland flanker Kevin McLaughlin giving three goes at eye-gouging McCaw?

@golden_statenba - Spot on. Consistancy is what sets the All Blacks apart from the rest of the world.

Oh my...only one team on the field, even BOD was below average, so many handling errors, best remember the Irish from last week.

Well done AB's, you can take whatever respect Ireland earned last week, back.

Long season over for Ireland, they we're at 20% at best, clearly emptied what was left in the tank last weekend. I feel bad for the people who paid money to see that and extra sorry for people who woke up early to watch it...

Kimbriki - are you referring to when Earls ran into Gear and caught his chin on Gear's shoulder... just before Gear's try? Accidental collision as far as I could see... unless there was al elbow in another play?

Just brilliant from the ABs. Most happy with how the new guys went.

And seeing McGod as an able back-up for No. 8.

What is up with this ref though? How did he get this job..? He seems like someone they pulled from the crowd, who happens to know the rules, and was given a ref uniform and whistle... Can't remember if I've ever seen a referee at this level have so little presence and demand so little respect. I don't think anybody even listened to him after a while... And how many knock-ons and forward passes did he miss!? He might as well not have been there - other than the yellow card the game would've probably looked the same.

And also, this is a first for me: congratulations to the groundman in Hamilton! That pitch looked absolutely magnificent!

Oh, and well done to the All Blacks too - you showed up just in time... I almost started to doubt you. Such a pity Aaron Cruden only stayed on for such a short period again... But even in that little time I think he proved my claim that he is the best fly-half in NZ at the moment correct. Just brilliant.

Lets hear it. Ireland were awful, had injuries, end of a long season.

Here's my response. All Blacks were amazing, were missing Carter, Reid, & Kaino, 3 of the best players in the world, & the series was already wrapped up.

All Blacks mana at its best.

good effort with so many new/inexperienced players on the field; first 'nilling' by the All Blacks since 2008, 19-0 v South Africa.

Aaron Cruden outstandong, game over after 20 mins.

Trinats, you seem to know such things, How hany points did the ABs leave on the park???

Awesome display but some of the worst reffing this year. But how come Gear didn't get a red card for the deliberate elbow to the head of the Irish defender? I don't expect that will get cited, just like the non-cited thuggery from McCaw and Dagg last week. Are teh Blacks taking over from the Sprinboks as the dirtiest team in world rugby?

What was worse a 3 pt loss or 60?

What a joke. I love how people judge these teams by their last game.

Consistency is the name of the game.
