'Canes: Kept play-offs hopes alive

Revenge was sweet for the Hurricanes after beating the Highlanders 26-20 at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday.

Trailing by one point and with six minutes left on the clock, Hurricanes wing Julian Savea burst through the Highlanders defence and raced in for a superb solo try that proved to be the match-winner.

The Hurricanes, who lost their previous encounter with the Highlanders this season, will consider themselves lucky to escape with this victory after two controversial calls went their way in a tight contest.

The Highlanders had Phil Burleigh's try chalked off by the TMO after he appeared to have scored in the corner - and then minutes later the Hurricanes got away with one when Jason Eaton's foot in touch was missed in the build-up to Faifili Levave's try.

Fly-half Chris Noakes and flank Adam Thomson had both scored tries for the Highlanders, while Noakes and Mike Delany added a penalty each as the hosts led 14-3 and then 20-19.

However Lavave's controversial try, Julian Savea's superb late breakaway and 16 points from the boot of Beauden Barrett rubbed salt into the wounds.

The Hurricanes have now won six and lost five from 11 matches, but the their concession of a bonus point means the Highlanders remain in third position on the New Zealand conference stance - a point ahead of the Wellington-based franchise.

The Hurricanes started the scoring with an early Barrett penalty only for the Highlanders to respond with Noakes stepping around three defenders to score near the posts and then add the conversion.

It was a try that signalled to the Highlanders there was ground to be made by taking the direct route at the Hurricanes.

Thomson led a series of pick-and-goes which took the Highlanders up to the Hurricanes line where the All Blacks flanker remained on hand to score the second try.

But while the Highlanders were scoring tries their half-time lead was restricted to 14-9 as Barrett penalties kept the Hurricanes in touch.

A Noakes penalty extended the Highlanders lead after the break, but the Hurricanes struck back immediately when they won the restart and the move ended with a try to Levave which Barrett converted from wide out.

The Hurricanes regained the lead with 15 minutes remaining with another Barrett penalty when Thomson was penalised for a late tackle on TJ Perenara.

Replacement pivot Delany put the Highlanders back in front with a handy penalty before Savea had the final say in a see-saw contest.

@Ramage

To be fair to Matthew Muir, if he it was who was the assistant ref, his view was obstructed. No way could he have called Jason Eaton out.

At times the best of us forget that our view on TV is different to the view on the field.

I'm a Highlanders supporter, so whenever I disagree with a referee's call, I'm willing to grant that it could be because I'm a one-eyed partisan. But when all of the commentators also disagree with the call - as was the case with the TMO disallowing the Burleigh try - I know it's not just me being biased, the decision genuinely WAS dubious.

As for Eaton's foot in touch in the leadup to the Hurricanes try which followed - well that's not even a matter for debate. There's no issues of me being biased, no possibilities to be considered - he quite simply had a foot in touch before he delivered the pass, end of story.

@ Editor.

Thanks. Although there were obviously dubious calls from the refereeing staff, I think he did extremely at consistently well elsewhere. Great idea to be a ref. Keep on like this, Glen.

@colvin it was not mistakes by the referee that was to blame. We are though getting some real shockers from the TMOs and assistants though. seems the assitants are racing to join the Braytenbach appreciation club as so many are missing vital parts of the game. Joining Braytenbach in the dubious role of dishonour from this week are Matthew Muir missing the foot on the line try given. Ian Smith's intervention when the crowd roared so he pulled a flag on a non event. Will Houston first call as an assistant got it wrong. Andrew Lees failure to get a number geez whats up. ProLegoate and Braytenbach nowwhere near any games tis weekend or sure to have been more. However the discussion between alsh and Kaplan was how I believe referees can work with their assistants for the benefit of the game. Their experience shone through they dealt with the original call first and the way they talked it through was a good lesson. Kaplan had seent he offence but the way he explained it led Walsh to infer that it was red whereupon Kaplan said no yellow. Now he saw it and thus called it and Walsh immediately accepted it. So the clarity was there in the end no wishy washy statements. Neither saw what started the brawl so they put it on report and the off field yellow cards have been awarded. There seems to be a rash of movements to rid us of some experienced referees and the appointment of younger referees both in Super and test matches. However while it is inevitable older referees will make room for younger referees I hope the new set up is mindful that the experience of some older referees far outweighs some of the younger inexperienced ones.

@jonesy2

Julian Savea still acts the bozo at times (remember how he charged into Taylor last week when Taylor was fielding a kick?). He has learnt a lot since last season and is much improved. I would want to see more improvement, however, before he became an All Black.

@ Ramage

Agree with you on those decisions. However, Glen Jackson was quite alright, not a bad refereeing at all.

Quite enjoyable match to watch, average game from Barrett, Peranara is among the best in business at nine. Savea try was outstanding.

I critcised All Black's management for picking Guildford ahead of Gear, the game today proved that I was wrong.

Hosea Gear on 2010 end of the year tour was an alien too and a joy to watch. No signs of that player yet.

I feel for the Highlanders, should have won by 1 point, easy for a touchie to miss the foot just in touch.

Well done Canes. Hope the Highlanders get a break they deserve it.

By the way APV1 if you are reading this did you see Jimmy Cowan come on, he is

struggling for pace and has clearly made the right decision to head for Gloucester he will add another 10 years on his career and still be too quick for those NH pedestrians.

Pretty tired looking Highlanders outfit starting to feel the pressure of all those close wins. Thought they made more opportunties than the Canes but just didn't finish off. Clearly a foot in touch in the lead up to Levave's try but those thing easy to miss for the touchy so no problems however there would never have been the question if the TMO had awarded Burleigh's try moments earlier. I rarely have problems with on-field officials but for a TMO with benefit of slo-mo over and over again there is no excuse, it was clearly a try...end of. So cheering for the Rebels now, need them to come through for the Highlanders - bugger as I speak the Crusaders have just scored. Not going to me my night it would seem.

Once again mistakes by the referee determined the result.

Burleigh (Highlanders) should have been awarded a try but wasn't. At least this went to the TMO who said it wasn't a try. The problem was that everyone else, including the commentary team and public who saw the same footage as the TMO said it was.

Eaton (Hurricans) was out and passed the ball to Levave who scored.

A turnaround of 14 points.

The officials continue to let the game down.

Ramage says...

The turning point would have to be the call by the TMO, Vinnie Munro, not to award the try followed so quickly by the assistant Matthew Muir not calling the foot on the line before the Hurricanes try that followed.
