Bulls: Tough day at the office

The crowd at AAMI Park in Melbourne were treated to ten tries as the Bulls edged a determined Rebels outfit 41-35 on Friday.
It was a valiant effort from the home side, who pushed the Bulls from start to finish and will be left reeling after suffering their seventh defeat of the season that could so nearly have ended with a win.
They matched the Bulls in all facets of play, however two penalties by Morne Steyn ultimately proved to be the only difference between the two sides at the final whistle.
Kurtley Beale's switch from full-back to fly-half proved to be a masterstroke by the Rebels, with the Wallabies star causing all sorts of trouble from the pivotal position while his goal-kicking was flawless.
However, his opposite number was equally up to the task with ball in hand and from the tee to finish a gripping encounter with a personal haul of 21 points.
The result takes the Bulls top of the South African conference and overall standings on 42 points, albeit temporarily with the Chiefs (39) still to play the toothless Lions on Saturday.
The Bulls started favourites and it looked like the hosts were in for a long day at the office after wing Akona Ndungane raced in for the opening try of the match after five minutes played.
Steyn slotted the touchline conversion and the Bulls had an early seven-point lead in their debut match in Melbourne.
But the men in pink were then forced to play catch-up when Rodney Blake and then Cooper Vuna scored in the space of five minutes to give the Rebels a 14-7 lead after Beale - who played a hand in both - added an extra four points from in front.
The Bulls hit back through a converted try to Bjorn Basson soon after the restart that drew the scores level, but were then a player short when lock Flip van der Merwe was sent to the sin-bin.
Rebels flank Luke Jones joined the Bok lock a few minutes later thanks to his tip-tackle on Basson, that may come back to haunt him if cited.
So with the scores locked at 14-all and fourteen players on each side, it was an even contest at this stage of the match until Steyn slotted over his first penalty of the game.
Steyn extended his side's lead even further courtesy of a simple converted solo score that was cancelled out by the impressive Nick Phipps five minutes from the break.
The Rebels weren't done there, however, after captain Gareth Delve was rewarded for turning down a penalty kick on offer to score under the posts in injury time to cut the Bulls lead to just three points (28-31) at half-time.
Only some strong defence from the Bulls kept the Rebels at bay early in the second half as the hosts enjoyed plenty of possession, but ultimately they were unable to turn that into points.
It proved to be costly after Steyn put in a clever chip-kick to set up centre JJ Engelbrecht for a try as the Bulls restored their 10-point buffer with 20 minutes remaining.
The Rebels needed to score at least twice to pinch the victory and were given a glimmer of hope when Vuna got his second of the evening in the 65th minute to set up a thrilling finish.
Trailing by just three points, the Rebels once again had all the momentum, only for Steyn to punish another bout of ill-discipline from the hosts. The Bok pivot's second penalty left the Rebels six points behind (41-35) with seven minutes left on the clock.
And that's where it stayed after the Rebels tried in vain to exploit a gap in the Bulls' stubborn defence.

@ PR naughty naughty how dare you suggest the Rebels played well. We are all aware of your bias and surely you and your one eyed reporter Dave Morris could see that the Bulls only let those Kelly Bushrangers score to encourage them, knowing all they had to do was get Morne to kick a few goals. So please stop saying some good things about these useless Aussie players. Who the hang do you think you are? Shame on you PR fancy having an opinion. Ban Dave Morris he is obviously biased.

great game. Shows what can happen when teams dont opt to kick every time they receive a penalty

@Sellanbosched2
If a fight broke out even in the dressing rooms the referee could award RED cards and cite players for suspension ect to answer your question

The last game the bulls played ... They turned the heat off and the Brumbies had 15 minutes of game time... We had to read a post about how brilliant the brumbies played.
This post showers gold all over the rebels.
I like your style...?!

What an amazing spectacle of a game, well done to both teams for playing their hearts out. I actually love the pink, the fact that a rugby team full of tough Saffas can actually wear shocking pink and not think anything of it is fantastic.
Calm down Saffas Titnats is winding you up, banter is not based on logic just finding a way to create waves.
Jonesy at it again, your biased disposition is such that you will never understand. Unfortunately he was not held properly in the tackle and therefore was entitled to get to his knees.
What is true is that the refs are blowing too quickly for tacklers to roll away and this may very well be the reason he was not held pinned for long enough.

You have also not factored in that the teams you mentioned, all have to play each other.

@ tha_mai... damn! hadn't been factoring a 2nd bye into my calcs, not that it should make too much difference as Bulls extra loss is offset by Stormers lack of 4-try bonus points, both will comfortably make the Top 6. Of teams not currently in the 6, only Sharks & Hurricanes can bridge the gap, & then only if the wheels come off at Highlanders. Still looking for a way my Crusaders can finish 4th overall & have the shortest road to the Final i.e. home qualifier, Hamilton semi, SA Final but it's not looking too flash atm, could be SA - Hamilton - SA the way things are panning out...

What the hell has the Bulls beating the Rebels in Australia got to do with the Boks losing the Rugby Championship? Where's the logic? Are the Other Aussy teams all hammering us?

And then what do you expect when wearing those pink shirts?

The Bulls leak far too many tries.
Trinats, the Bulls are the second best saffa's side, to judge who is the worst OZ you have to toss up among 4 teams.
Who is the genius who decided to award 4 points for a bye? That's confusing. Having a bye each single week would be the only way for the Blues to progress.

I saw the last 5 minutes of the game. There was a minor scuffle after the final whistle which wasn't serious, but it got me thinking (yes, yes I know that is a challenge well met). So my question to all of you out there who know something about refereeing is as follows: When does the ref take control of the game and when does that management end? At the first and last whistle? What would happen if there was a serious fight that broke out after the final whistle has been blown? Could the ref issue cards?

I have to say PR that you have cost me a lot of money. All that time and expense on therapists couches trying to remove that chip on my shoulder about being South African and nobody likes us. And then last Saturday I discover that not only have my posts been removed, but most of the other SA ones as well. And on top of that I am no longer allowed to add a comment under 'Stellenbosched'!!
So here I go again, first appointment on Monday morning. Start therapy all over again. Life is so unfair.

@rugby_lord never happy, if they played traditional bulls game of defensive game putting pressure on opposition and slotting penalties it would be boring. They give you an entertaining game to watch and because they win you cry about it.
They deserved their win and hats of for attack minded game plan.
Rest assured the boks won't play that way and no team plays that way comes world cup. Solid defense then points on the board is the rule as to much at stake to play this way. Forgive me Oz and Nz did play open game in France world cup but were on plane home when their supporters were just arriving for knock out stages.
Well played to both teams great to watch.

Bulls haven't been leaking tries all season, before the last 2 weeks they have had the best defence, and they will back it up again when it really matters.
