Highlanders: Back to winning ways

A second-half scoring blitz from the Highlanders helped the hosts to a comprehensive 43-12 win over the Rebels in Invercargill on Friday.

It was an impressive return to winning ways for the Kiwi outfit, who bounced back from last week's loss to the Brumbies with a seven-try victory.

Adam Thomson bagged a hat-trick and Ben Smith a brace as the Highlanders clawed their way back from nine points down in the first half to draw level at half-time (12-12), before burying their visitors after the break.

The bonus-point win takes the southerners top of the overall standings and now lead the New Zealand conference - albeit temporarily depending on how other results go on Saturday.

The Rebels were in the game for forty minutes and would have fancied their chances of pulling off an upset after leading 9-0 thanks to three James O'Connor penalties.

Even against fourteen men, the Highlanders failed to get on the scoreboard after dominating the majority of possession. That all changed when Smith showed tremendous upper body strength to power his way over the line eight minutes before half-time.

Chris Noakes added the conversion and the hosts were back in the hunt.

O'Connor slotted his fourth penalty of the match, before the Highlanders responded with a well-worked try to Thomson that levelled the scores after the half-time hooter had sounded.

The home side started the second half in the same fashion they ended the first, through another five-pointer from their All Black flank. Noakes was once again unsuccessful with the conversion, but was on target three minutes later after Kade Poki touched down for the Highlanders' bonus point.

Great vision from Aaron Smith saw the scrum-half chip into open space that allowed Poki to chase down the ball and regather for a superb score - at that stage, the Rebels had conceded three tries in six minutes either side of half-time.

And there was still more to come as Jamie Mackintosh added his name to the scoresheet after crashing over from close range, before Smith broke clear to race in for his second.

Thomson then put the icing on the cake with his third try of the match to wrap up a dominant second-half display that will give them plenty of confidence ahead of their next match against the Stormers in a week's time.

Haven't had their bye yet, Stormers fresh off the plane (& no doubt still sore from their epic v Bulls) next up, looking good for a top-6 finish unless the wheels fall off & if Fairfax Media are to be believed MIke Delaney about to come onboard as Slade's replacement... Highlanders v Chiefs shaping up as the NZ conf Final?

While the Highlanders were giving away stupid penalties in the first half my punt on the Rebels seemed safe. How wrong!

This was my first chance to watch the Highlanders for 80 minutes. Who would have thought this team capable of such outstanding play? Full of aggression, pace, variety. I don't know how much importance to attach to the Rebels' weakness, but the Highlanders' second half display must be just how anyone would want their team to play the game. Surely, Jamie Joseph is doing the best job of any senior coach in New Zealand right now. Put him in charge of an All Black team and what mightn't happen?

I know Aaron Smith is getting all the plaudits, but I thought Jimmy Cowan was outstanding when he came on. Smith's challenge appears to have galvanised him.

@Ramage

My thoughts exactly. O'Connor and Beale grabbed the money. We needn't feel any sympathy.

I just wiki-ed O'Connor. He has New Zealand parents and South African grandparents, was born in Australia, lived in NZ for a while before returning to Australia, went to school in Queensland but signed for the Western Force and now plays for the Rebels in Melbourne. Who next? And he's still only 21. So perhaps we shouldn't be harsh. I mean, does he know where he is from any more?

@Bones7 Oh well you make your bed and then lie in it. They chose to play for the Rabbles.

thomson, just ridiculous. the guy is a machine. gear was machine like as well. ben smith awesome too.

Euskadi -- youre a moron. the force are better than every south african team. that puts it in perspective.

JayStarr- saying australia have lack of depth makes me worry for you mental health. seriously.

@ Ulrich: Good point - I was thinking the same thing as I watched it. They reminded me of the Reds in the 2nd half against the Bulls last week... They looked completely out of their depth. And I think that's what this illustrates - Australia's lack of depth. There is no way a full-strength Australian team would thrash a 2nd string Bulls or Highlanders team like this...

Ulrich, the Rebels were always in danger of coping a flogging and the Reds' lack of depth was brutally exposed. The problem Aust has is that it has no bridging competition (NPC/Currie Cup. Heinekin/T14 etc) to adequately prepare players for Super rugby.

On a side note, it was a little strange to see two English and one Welsh capped players taking part in the Highlanders-Rebels games. NZ crowds are up, TV ratings are up, NZ has the RWC -- strange times indeed!

Be afraid, be very afraid!!:-)

The Australian conference is easily the weakest, Rebels and Force offer 4 probably 5 competition points for those teams lucky enough to play them. The Reds although depleted through injuries are showing their soft underbelly, my pick of the most competitive Australian team is the Brumbies. Having said this the Highlanders were pretty average in the first 40, lots of handling errors and were a little one dimensional but the overwhelming possession tired the Rebels defence so the flood gates opened early in the 2nd half. The Highlanders have made a great start to the competition but I have my doubts that they can maintain their winning form particularly with the substantial injury list they have. My pick is for the Chiefs and Crusaders to finish above them in the NZ conference.

Feel sorry for James O'Connor and Kurtley Beale thinking they were being lured to greener pastures instead of an abbatoir

And the Highlanders are rather depleted. Must have been a serious implosion from the Rebels or the Highlanders were seriously good in the second half.

Is this in indication of the strength of the Australian conference after two of their teams suffered massive losses in successive weeks?
