Adam Thomson All Blacks v Ireland 2012

In hot water: Adam Thomson

All Blacks flanker Adam Thomson has been cited for stamping on Scotland lock Alasdair Strokosch during Sunday's Test match at Murrayfield.

Thomson was sent to the sin-bin by referee Jerome Garces in the 43rd-minute on advice from touch judge Simon McDowell and will face a disciplinary hearing in London on Wednesday.

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson said after the game he believes Thomson should have been given a straight red card.

If suspended, Thomson could be sidelined for anything between three and eight weeks, ruling him out of Saturday's Test against Italy as well as the clashes with Wales and England.

I should think so too, there's no excuse for that kind of play at any level of rugby. His actions were clearly intentional and he deserves what he gets.

Regardless of how hard he stamped, he did and to someone's head. And regardless of whether that player was injured as a result or not, he should get a ban. And a good few weeks too.

It is not his job to ruck someone's head out of the way. Whilst some of us rue the day that rucking was removed as a tactic, it had to be and was innevitable. Too many injuries were occurring, because people were rucking "delicate" parts. A subtle hint is one thing, but the face, neck, groin, etc were being targeted or hit, so it had to stop.

No it's not tiddlywinks, but it's not GBH either. There has to be a sensible balance and studs on heads is not on.
