Wallabies power past USA

Hat-trick: Adam Ashley-Cooper

Australia returned to winning ways after their shock loss to Ireland at the Rugby World Cup after sweeping past the USA 67-5 in Wellington on Friday.

The Wallabies punished some weak defence from the Americans (responsible for 24 missed tackles) by running in eleven tries, with wing Adam Ashley-Cooper bagging a hat-trick.

However, the bonus-point Pool C victory could come at a major cost for the already injury-hit Australians after losing Kurtley Beale, Rob Horne, Wycliff Palu, Pat McCabe as well as Anthony Fainga'a to injury.

The USA started the match with plenty of promise, dominating proceedings with a fearless approach that caught the Wallabies by surprise. That was until Australia clipped the high-flying Eagles wings with two quick-fire tries in the 8th and 11th minutes respectively.

First Rob Horne opened the scoring after a Quade Cooper break-out saw the pivot link with Kurtley Beale who then threw a pass to his former Waratahs'team-mate on his outside for a superb try in the corner. Beale failed to add the extras.

Next over the line was ex-Wallaby skipper Rocky Elsom, who - after exposing some sloppy defence from the Americans - dotted down to hand his team a ten-point lead. Again, Beale was off-target with the conversion.

Beale's two misses didn't seem to matter though, with the crowd anticipating plenty more tries to come from the Tri-Nations champs.

However, up until the half-hour mark it was all the USA as Eddie O'Sullivan's troops marched towards Australia's tryline and set up camp. Number eight JJ Gagiano then dived over from a 5m scrum to bring out the loudest roar from the stands, who were clearly in support of the underdogs.

Eagles fly-half Nese Malifa shaved the right-hand upright with his conversion attempt, but by trailing Australia by just five points (10-5), the USA looked like they meant business. Or so we thought.

With their tails up, the USA launched another attack at the Wallabies and a second try looked to be on the cards after Kevin Swiryn broke clear, only for the winger to lose possession in the tackle. Elsom counter-attacked close to his own line, before unleashing Adam Ashley-Cooper on his outside who bounced off another weak tackle before passing inside to the supporting Beale for a length-of-the-field try.

Cooper took over the kicking duties and was successful from bang in front. From then on in, the Wallabies took the game by the scruff of its neck and - as expected - began to pile on the points with centre Fainga'a going over for Australia's bonus-point try before half-time.

Cooper added to Australia's first-half kicking woes (four tries, three missed conversions) and the 22-5 scoreline at the break gave the Eagles a wee bit of respectability.

It wouldn't last though, as the fired-up Wallabies started the second half in the same fashion they ended the first, after Drew Mitchell marked his return to Test rugby with a well-worked try.

McCabe proved to be a worthy replacement for Horne when he followed suit with Australia's sixth touchdown. The seventh, eighth and ninth tries deservedly came through Ashley-Cooper in a devastating six-minute spell.

Firstly the winger showed his pace to score on the outside, he then made the most of turnover ball to stroll in before completing his hat-trick as he supported a superb breakaway.

With Beale nursing an injury off the field, Berrick Barnes took his chance to impress with both hands - setting up McCabe as well as Ashley-Cooper while showing coach Robbie Deans he could be Australia's answer with the tee after knocking over four of his five conversions.

With the Americans fading badly Faingaa added to his tally as he slid over in the corner - and things got worse for the minnows as Blaine Scully was sin-binned.

Replacement number eight Radiko Samo scored Australia's final try two minutes from time before Faingaa copped a knee in the head in the last tackle of the game.

Man of the match: Count them... one, two, three - it has to be Adam Ashley-Cooper, who proved to be a threat with ball in hand throughout when he wasn't crossing the whitewash.

Moment of the match: Rocky Elsom's counter-attacking run that ended in Kurtley Beale's try proved to be the beginning of the end for the Americans.

Villain of the match: A yellow card to USA full-back Blaine Scully was the only mishap in an otherwise incident-free spectacle.

The US Defensive system was a disgrace. I was at the game. And midway through the first half , whne the score was only 5-10 they decided to run some strange pattern with Tai enosa, the center standing directly behind the scrum & the right wing moving into midfield. They did this even when the Wallabies had a 6 on 5 off a set piece. Speaking to an Aussie player at the airport the next day he said they just couldn't believe it either.

@Walaroo, I am going to take Trinats advise and stick to playing against the minnows where we get wins, and that way we will at least get to the semis when we come up against a top teir side like New Zealand. =)

Faigaa's injury was long overdue with the kind of tackles he makes on the rugby field...I think most the time (both Faingaa boys) they dive at the feet of the players (Samo at times use the same technique)....

@Trinats

Both the Springbks and the Wallabies are completely different teams than when they met for the trinations in South Africa, even if they field the exact same players.

And as for beating NZ and winning the Super 15, very very VERY favourable traveling and opposition resp.

This RWC shows the real "strength" of the Aussie scrum (weak). Think of me when you see their front row crumbling against the Russians (they will have 6 days rest so beware).

getting excited about that win . . . like SA-Namibia, NZ-Japan, nothing of value. Less in fact given the number of injuries Oz have now, will Giteau be answering the phone, or will he tell Deans to get . . .

@bloemboy

Your idea will never happen and anyway there is an organisation that dose it already its the BARBARAINS.They invite players from all over the world teir 1 and 2 countries and usualy have at least 1 uncapped player

I think the call will go out for Gitaue now given the injuries to the 2 centers and Barnes imo showed his needed if for nothing else his goal kicking Cooper and O.Conner just arnt international class kickers atm maybe in 2 yrs ??Also Sharpe done enough to be a starter imo in the QFs

trinats what a dreamer! Can you honestly tell me the reds would have won the super 15 if they had the schedule of the crusaders? They were very luckly they won there game in brisbane that day thanks to the ref! They are in the easy conference, sa and nz have the difficult conferences.

Poor robbie with the injuries but hey that's aussie for ya "cream puffs", good first team , not so good backup. Sa & Nz weren't taking the tri-nations that seriously this year by looking at the teams they put out on the day .

Welcome back Barnsey! He looked good! Sharpey had a cracker too and I thought vickers looked mean coming off the bench. Scrum looked good, but I thought US tight five looked better in open play. Hope the injured pull up ok, still think we got the depth to take it to the Saffa's! Bring on QF!!!

QC was ok finally got to see him tackle...but the missing link will have to be Barnes....absolute professional...not entertaining but 100% effective and effecient...and a good goal kicker...

I did not expect anything less (thrashing)...but must say they should have hit at leat the 80...a full professional team (tier 1- Oz) vs a tier 2/3 (considering they rested big game players like TC)...still good to see Mitchell and Barnes back...

Geez the Wallabies confidence looks rocked, especially Cooper. Big troubles. Barnes only shining light. I think Coopers going to be dropped.

@bloemboy. That would be brilliant, although I could never see it happening.

They should definitely let rugby take a leaf from cricket and let the minnows draft a few players from the bigger countries. Minnows like USA could have done with Gear, Joe van Niekerk and Ben Smith, Namibia with Sivivatu, Pretorius and Messam, Australia with BJ Botha, Mujati, Britz, Hoeta, Cockett, Michalak....

@Trinats...

I dont' usually comment, but you kind of asked for it.

How many of those so mentioned wins of your team were in NZ? This Oz team has one game plan mate, it is called "run around". I live in the US and I know many of the players you played against today, even played with a couple of them, they are amateur level at best, simply because I am just an amateur player / was. I already know what SA has in store for you...

@ curates_egg - I've not seen tha game, but you claim that the, "Australian scrum powers the US scrum backwards;" Really?! I appreciate that it was the USA and they're an emerging nation, rather than a Tier 1 nation. But the Aussies won a scrum!? THAT'S cause enough for them to celebration, surely! I can't wait to see that when I get home - an Australian scrum being dominant. Rarer than hen's teeth, that!

I suppose it was the fact that they had to use all 8 people, which ultimately cost them a try. Interesting...

Hey! Trinats! Who are your ringers hiding in the depths of the scrum, where they can't be seen, boulstering the pack..? ;-)

Well the result looks good, but the cost was high and other teams would have capitalised on some of the Wallaby shortcomings. One thing for sure is they need Pocock back, especially against the Safas. After the way Ireland blasted them over, which in many ways is what England did to them at the end of last year, they are going to struggle for ball at the set and Burger is building up a head of steam so the two open sides will be interesting. Trouble for the Aussies is they have no real back up and a player like Giteau was left behind. Certainly if Pocock, Beale and Palu are missing and Cooper tarts about as he did today as well as missing conversions (Admittedly with some nice cameos inbetween) I just don't think they'll get there, Pity for lovers of open rugby, but the Safas won't care. Well the weather has not encouraged open rugby so the odds on an Aussie win extend.

Bit worrying with some of the injuries in the game they won easily.USA were but a shadow of themselves as opposed to other games. I suppose more willl emerge in the light of day Saturday but it seems all sides are having their share of injuries and some of the latest to hit the Wallaby team are worrying. Dont like to see some of these bad injuries and hope all are well and can continue.

"curates_egg -- yeah that was drew mitchell but he was hardly going to stand on the blindside betweem the scrum and the touchline was he.."

Jonesy2, without wanting to sound rude, but are you on crack? Or is Cooper's ability to go missing on defence now endemic in the Australian camp? In the good old days, any player shirking his responsibilities like that would probably have earned a dig on the sly from his own team.
