Definitely too short a ban.

Why not introduce the rule that, once a player is banned they shouldn't be allowed any contact with their club. In this case it would mean he has to undertake pre season himself, then learn all the moves, calls etc in November when he comes back in.

Difficult to police I know, and if clubs are found to be flaunting the rules they should be punished even more heavily.

Collective responsibility.

32 weeks for DELIBERATELY breaking a player's arm? He should be banned for life. As for Hartley, I still question what Ferris' fingers were doing in his mouth.

Can anyone answer, not specific to this player - when a professional player gets suspended like this, is there any financial penalty on him, or is the club obliged to keep on paying? Can understand if a player is injured during play, club would have insurance for that, but when it is 'self-inflicted' . . . ? Or can he just take a well-paid holiday?

Was this violent behavior provoked ? Who was the instigator ? Me thinks Calum Clark should understand that he represents Rugby: We are Paladins, not thugs.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Rugby bans need to be measured out in matches not weeks. This ban isn't 32 weeks at all considering 10 of those weeks are the off-season. In fact, the victim Hawkins will not miss that many fewer matches than Clark and I find that very hard to take.

This incident was as brutal and horrific as anything I have seen in a few years given how malicious it was, off the ball, and the damage it caused. PRL/ERC/IRB need to put their heads together and do something about just how these bans are administered and the tariffs.

32?! Far too lenient. He should miss the entire 2012/13 season.

Serves him right.

It's been brewing for a while with him and finally boiled over the top. He'll learn the hard way now.

Lucky he only got 32 weeks!!

I really can't I understand why he felt the need to do this to a fellow professional. And to do so after the whistle.

A really bad example of foul play and I think he's lucky. I'm a Saints fan and would be happy if he never played for the Saints again after this.

Oh wow! Thoroughly deserved ban for a malicious act that has no place on a rugby pitch. Hartley should have gotten the same.

Northampton players seem to be involved in a lot of disgraceful behaviour on a rugby pitch. Could some English rugby fan please explain to a non-English rugby fan why that is?
