Glasgow Warriors and Scottish Rugby have announced that Crusaders full-back or winger Sean Maitland will be joining the RaboDirect PRO12 outfit.
The 24-year-old is one of the most highly-rated outside backs in Super Rugby, and qualifies to play for Scotland courtesy of both his paternal Grandparents who were born in Glasgow.
Subject to medical and visa, he will join up with the Warriors squad in the coming weeks, having put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at Scotstoun Stadium until at least the May 31, 2015.
Since making his Super Rugby debut in 2008, Maitland has scored some 24 tries, equaling the record for the most individual touchdowns in a single tournament game when he crossed the try-line four times against the Brumbies in 2011.
He was a part of the New Zealand U19 team that won the World Cup in 2007, and the U20 side that scooped the 2008 Junior World Championship. Maitland scored against Argentina, Ireland and Wales in that latter tournament.
In 2010, he represented the New Zealand Maori team, and commended himself to the British audience with two tries for the Crusaders at Twickenham in their showcase Super Rugby game against the Sharks in March 2011.
"We're delighted to be welcoming a player of Sean Maitland's calibre to Glasgow Warriors," head coach Gregor Townsend told glasgowwarriors.org.
"The back three is an area of the team where we already have a number of excellent options, and Sean will provide a further layer of quality as we enter another busy phase of the season.
"His try-scoring record in Super Rugby speaks for itself, and he's also a player who has a big appetite for self-improvement. He will be a fantastic addition to our squad and will, I'm sure, be very popular with our supporters.
"It's another indication of our increasing profile of Glasgow Warriors that a player of Sean's ability and ambition sees us as a club where he can continue to progress."

miller12 - to explain this once again, it has to be a side nominated as a second team playing against another the same. U20s are rarely used as a national second team and the case of the Shingler saga was because the French U20s side were also their second team. The Junior All Blacks are the official NZ team and compete in the Pacific Nations Cup.

@Willy - RWC 2011. Samoa stole 15 players born in NZ away from NZ. NZ stole 3 players born in Samoa away from Samoa (Mils Muliania, Jerome Kaino, Isaia Toeva).
But look may your myth continue...

come on IRB. Time to get rid of the grandparent clause and change to parents only. And while you are at it, increase residency to 5 years. I'm sick of kiwis and others playing for Home Nations and then returning 'home' at the end of their career

Both New Zealand and South Africa designated their u/20 sides as their 2nd sides from 2012 in order to tie down their young talent. Their A sides haven't played any matches in number of years and have for all intents and purposes been shelved.

Isn't the NZ Maori the second NZ team...I think he also made the NZ A Team once, I may be wrong but what a loss for Crusaders...He's probably the quickest winger in NZ Rugby...

NZ second team are the junior all blacks...they are not an age grade team despite the name. Maori can not count as 2nd team to new zealand as it only represents maoris therefore cannot be representative of NZ as a whole.
ps gopperth played for the JBs.

Visser and Maitland on the wings for Scotland, some serious damage could be done out wide by the Scots (if they can get the ball out there). Also both these players could potentially make the lions squad in the summer.
The AIG All Blacks (sorry couldn't resist) can't have any issues with losing him, hasn't been capped and isn't first choice. Plus NZ poach a lot of islander players so would be hypocricital of them if they started complaining.

Great signing and a shoe in for the Scots and possibly even in with a shot at the Lions if all goes well but how?
New Zealand U19, U20 and Maori? Exactly who is New Zealands Second team? the IRB needs to define this for each nation and stop this debacle. No Doubt his grandparents make him eligible but playing for another country at a high level should prevent this.

The whole eligibility system is a joke. I believe firmly that if a player plays any representative rugby for a country, then that is who you play for. Its becoming a joke where young guys who have played international rugby are being poached by other international teams who cannot produce their own players. This is being done by the NH teams and is annoying. Go invest in your youth structures and make your own players. Enough of my rant. good luck to the lad, he will be in for a shock as the saders team will probably beat the scots national team.

A really fantastic talent and I don't think anyone could begrudge him the right to test himself at an international level. He's hitting his prime and can't wait around forever for a test cap
