At the Sharks: Carlos Spencer
Former All Blacks star Carlos Spencer has been brought in by the Sharks to help the South African side ahead of the 2013 Super Rugby campaign.
According to sport24.co.za, the former Lions coach will be spending time with last year's finalists and gets to work with Patrick Lambie.
"His experience as a player and the opportunity for us to use him - no one was - was great for us," explained Sharks head coach John Plumtree.
"He loves his coaching and his knowledge of fly-half and backline play is invaluable, he will also be looking at kicking skills, he was a great tactical kicker himself and he is really good at passing on his knowledge.
"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to use him here and it's good for the players to have a change. Because he's going to be here for a couple of weeks, he can enjoy himself and get to know the players which can only be of benefit for everyone.
"I was really impressed with what he did with Elton Jantjies."
Spencer added that he was delighted to be called in and could not wait to get started.
"I'm really looking forward to it; Plum (John Plumtree) invited me to come here and spend a couple of weeks with the Sharks, obviously to have a look at Pat Lambie and a few of the other boys. I'm really happy to be here," he said.
"The Sharks have always been a very competitive side, they've always been up there amongst the top teams, be it Currie Cup or Super Rugby. They've always had a very dominant forward pack and backed that up with some pretty skilful backs. They are always challenging for a top four spot and finals, they're an exciting team to watch.
"They play a good brand of rugby, one I enjoy as well as, being an attacking player.
"They came close last year and hopefully they can do it this year, I'm looking forward to it, to see how they go this year."

As long as Carlos doesn't try to teach players how to tackle props, the way he tackled Richard Bands - greatest prop try ever? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0Y5Fkb4YOg
10 Years later, and I still love this try

Carlos a good tactical kicker in his day(?) - not from the games I saw. A totally attack minded 10 could be good for the Sharks - as long as they don't try some of the flashy rubbish Carlos did it in their own 22!!

It was going to be incredibly close for the SA Conference between the Stormers and Sharks anyway... But to add Carlos Spencer's influence to an already impressive attack might just tip the balance in favour of the Sharks now. The Stormers will have to continue with the attacking approach that won them the Currie Cup, otherwise they're going to be left behind.

If Lambie can get some of Spencer's flair without Spencer's occasional lapses then this is good for the Sharks. I think he had a good effect on Jantjies at the Lions.
