Craig Joubert: Heads a strong team

Sanzar have announced an 18-man strong refereeing panel for the 2013 Super Rugby tournament.

The announcement includes five new referees to the circuit, including Argentinean Francisco Pastrana who controlled his first Super Rugby match in 2012.

The team includes the southern hemisphere's top performers, with Craig Joubert, Steve Walsh and Chris Pollock - who is returning from injury - heading up a strong team.

"The recent form of some of our referees in the Test environment has given us an excellent senior group within the team, and we have been able to include a healthy number of young referees," said Sanzar game manager Lyndon Bray.

"They have been selected with an eye to the future, both for Super Rugby and Test rugby."

Along with Pastrana, Australia's James Leckie has been recalled to the squad, while Rohan Hoffman (a former professional rugby player), Jason Jaftha from South Africa and Nick Briant from New Zealand get their first taste of Super Rugby with their selections.

"Along with the five new referees introduced to Super Rugby in 2012, we have a very strong nucleus of younger referees, blended with some of the best in the world at the top of their game," added Bray.

The full Super Rugby Referee panel for 2013 is:

South Africa: Craig Joubert, Jaco Peyper, Jonathan Kaplan, Lourens van der Merwe, Stuart Berry, Jason Jaftha
New Zealand: Chris Pollock, Glen Jackson, Garratt Williamson, Jonathon White, Mike Fraser, Nick Briant
Australia: Steve Walsh, Andrew Lees, Angus Gardner, James Leckie, Rohan Hoffman
Argentina: Francisco Pastrana

This makes me feel a bit nervous... There are too many names on this list I do not know. But from the South Africans I think Lourens vd Merwe and Stuart Berry would have to lift their game to get to Super Rugby level. VD Merwe gets too flustered too easily for my liking, and Berry is very good sometimes, but still too inconsistent. The same for Jafta, who can also have a bit of an attitude sometimes... I would also like Jonathan Kaplan to remember that he makes mistakes and stop acting like he is some all-seeing all-knowing refereeing god - maybe then he will become one of the top referees again.

Glad to see Glen Jackson is back for NZ... I think he was pretty good last year.

Hope to see neutral refs when opposing provincial teams from different countries play next year. Good luck to all!

What a relief - no NH refs - at this stage.
