Eventful afternoon: Schalk Brits
Saracens got their Heineken Cup campaign off to a fantastic start when they thrashed Edinburgh 45-0 at Murrayfield on Saturday.
Charlie Hodgson scored 25 points as Saracens laid down a marker in Pool 1 with a resounding win in the Scottish capital.
After a fairly even opening quarter of an hour, the visitors landed the first blow when Richard Wigglesworth took a quick tap penalty close to the opposition line and, after he was stopped just short, Brad Barritt and Charlie Hodgson fed Joel Tomkins to score on his Heineken Cup debut.
Hodgson kicked the conversion from the right touchline and then added another three points moments later with a penalty from in front of the posts after an infringement in the scrum.
And the Saracens fly-half kicked two further penalties, one after a superb tackle from Kelly Brown on the half-hour mark and another from out wide on the right-hand side, to make it 16-0 at the break.
The English side were reduced to 14 men right at the start of the second half when Schalk Brits was sent to the sin bin but Edinburgh were unable to take advantage of the extra man and Hodgson even added to the lead with another penalty during that ten-minute period.
At 19-0 with an hour gone, the game was almost in the bag for Sarries and they cut loose in the final quarter, with Owen Farrell scoring the first of four second-half tries with almost his first touch after coming on as a replacement.
Chris Ashton provided the final pass for Farrell and the winger grabbed a try himself just a few minutes later after Hodgson had drifted across the field and invited him to come inside and sprint over underneath the posts.
Alex Goode waltzed through the Edinburgh defensive line to score in the left-hand corner and seal the bonus point with just over ten minutes remaining before Hodgson charged down a kick, gathered in the loose ball and strolled over the line to cap a brilliant individual display and add even more gloss to an already emphatic victory.

I heard that Edinburgh were concentrating on their Pro12 campaign this year and ingoring the HC. It appears that they're going to alternate which they compete in each year.
;-)

Mr_Right. i'm hardly going to say that sarries were not better in every department than edinburgh yesterday. pls look at the respective fixture lists so far this season. pls check how many games visser, denton, rennie etc have played. then compare that to how many games the sarries outfit has played together. it's pretty simple at this stage of the season. one team is up an running (but not yet burnt out). the other side are barely out of pre-season.
my hypothesis is that IF this game had occurred in, say, april2013, edinburgh might have had a better chance. Last year edinburgh got thru a relatively easy pool (racing, lon irish and cardiff) and got a home QF (despite cardiff arguably being the best team in the pool - did you see the game in cardiff?). then beat a toulouse side ravaged by injury in the QF in april.
what are your thoughts?

Very surprised at the result to be honest but not Sarries winning, they're a side with real nouse & know how to win (not normally scoring many try's mind you). As for Edinburgh, looks like last year was a fluke and supports the argument for qualification on merit and not rewarding sides who finish second bottom. The attendance was very disappointing - it will probably take a competive Pro12 to build interest

@rosbif
So when a Scottish team loses to an English/French team its cause the other team is 'battle hardened'. But when an English/French team loses its cause they are overplayed? Make up your mind.
How about the possibility that Sarries won cause they were just a lot better than Edinburgh? Tactically and physically.

oooooolala. i guess edinburgh had an easier pool last year. (and the strategy of resting players early in the season risks you being undercooked in the first round). sarries, on the other hand, have had a fair number of tough AP games so were obviously battle-hardened for this one. still. total demolition here. wonder if there is any read-across to relative strength of AP vs Pro12? (but that's a whole different debate hehehe)

I have to say that was one of the most dominent games ive ever seen in the HEC by any side .Edinburgh just wherent init at all,in any area or phase of the game, even with a man advantage..Saracens didnt just frustrate and stranggle Edinburgh ,they ran over them with ease, and forced them back everytime with superb defence. Now if only England can defend like that ,and M/Catt can get them attacking like L.Irish a season ago, what a team we might have.
