Scott Higginbotham Australia v South Africa

Scott Higginbotham: Big impact off the bench

Australia got their Rugby Championship campaign back on track with a 26-19 win over South Africa in Perth. Planet Rugby rates the players.

15 Kurtley Beale: Played conservatively by kicking and passing most of the balls that came his way. Had a steady outing and although he's still some way off his best, this was a much better performance than his last start in a Wallabies jersey. 6/10

14 Dom Shipperley: The debutant did what was expected of an international wing and after a nervy start got more involved in the action as the game progressed. Will be satisfied with his effort especially on defence where kept the potentially dangerous Francois Hougaard in check. 7/10

13 Adam Ashley-Cooper: Kept the Springboks busy when he had the ball in hand and put in another solid display on defence. Saved a try when he first tackled Lwazi Mvovo and then Jean de Villers in quick succession. 7.5/10

12 Berrick Barnes: Like most of his team-mates he improved as the match progressed and gave another excellent goal-kicking display. Varied his play well on attack and combined well with Quade Cooper on his inside. 7.5/10

11 Digby Ioane: As usual he was always looking for work but did not get much opportunities on attack. Had a quiet game by his standards and will look to improve in his next match. 6/10

10 Quade Cooper: Improving with every match but still not at his best. Impressed with his kicking out of hand and did well to create space for his his team-mates to run off him. 7/10

9 Will Genia: Led his side well although he left the field with an injury after 70 minutes. Always probing around the fringes of the rucks and mauls and made the assist that led to Australia's first try. 7.5/10

8 Radike Samo: Made little impact in this match and seldom got his hands on the ball which is why he was chosen for this Test. Put in a good hit on Hougaard. 5/10

7 Michael Hooper: Australia's best player. Impressed at the breakdowns and put in a huge effort on defence, making 11 tackles. Also carried the ball well and very effective in the tight-loose.8.5/10

6 Dave Dennis: Much better showing than previous matches. Won several crucial line-outs and worked hard in the tight exchanges. 6.5/10

5 Nathan Sharpe: Made a shocking start by conceding penalties at will but improved gradually. His experience proved invaluable for the Wallabies especially in the latter stages. 6/10

4 Sitaleki Timani: Another solid display as the team's enforcer. Cleaned the rucks well and also put his body on the line with some big tackles before exiting through injury. 7/10

3 Ben Alexander: Got the match-winning try but also kept Beast Mtawariria in check at the scrums. Also defended well, making eight tackles. 7.5/10

2 Tatafu Polota-Nau: Stood up well to the physical onslaught from the South Africans, giving as good as he got. His effort in the scrums must not be underestimated. 7/10

1 Benn Robinson: Solid effort in the tight exchanges. Did his primary duties well but came off in the first half before returning late in the game. 6/10

Replacements:

16 Saia Fainga'a: Didn't play long enough for a rating.

17 James Slipper: Came on for Robinson during the first half and played well, especially in the scrums. Also defended bravely but conceded two crucial penalties. 7/10

18 Scott Higginbotham: Made the biggest impact off the bench, scoring with his first touch of the ball. Won valuable metres with ball in hand and played a huge part in the Wallabies' fightback. 7.5/10

19 Liam Gill: Solid effort during his 15 minutes on the field. Combined well with Hooper to slow down the Springboks' ball at the breakdowns. 6/10

20 Nick Phipps: Didn't play long enough to warrant a rating.

21 Mike Harris: Didn't play long enough to warrant a rating.

22 Anthony Fainga'a: Didn't play long enough to warrant a rating.

Georgesmith - this constant attacking of Sharpe is quite tedious for people who understand the game of rugby. Check the fantasy stats on any site both for Super Rugby and the Championship and see who is always at the top.... now where is your poster boy Simmonds??.. no where to be seen. Get a life and guess what - Sharpe is captain for Saturday... that's got to stick in your throat.. thank god you are not a selector.

Nathan Sharpe for captain then George Smith will have his way as captains get injured and are then unable to play. He was into everything but he does push the boundaries a lot and got caught out by the NH ref who are always looking for penalties - its what they love to do.

@ Bronco... you should go back to the NRL. N.Sharpe proved to be the worst Wallaby performer of the night.. He gave away the most penalties and did you not see it. He doesn't have the fitness, gas or legs for Test rugby, did u olso not see that..

Nathan Sharp is the best Aus lock since Eales, and yet gets picked on like he is Quade Cooper.

As for the penalties, who was the wistle happy muppet ref again, and where was he from???

How quickly you all turn on Sharpe - who won the majority of lineouts (particularly when that useless clown Polota - Nau was throwing them all over the place)?

Whenever you need a forward runner, who's there? Sharpe.

Perhaps (and I'm just spitballing here) he was penalised due to being the ONLY forward at many of the early contests, before the rest of the pack got their As into G. He was penalised once at a maul due to some very clever work by the Saffers in moving the ball and putting him offside - but he is usually the best Aussie defender in these situations.

Beale has 2 bad games and everyone still wants him on the pitch, Sharpie draws a few penalties and is suddenly the bad guy!

He should be made captain with Genia out, but who knows what Denas is going to do!

Oh please - this was a dead average display against a worse team. Samo was no existent, Cooper was running scared as always and Barnes... well so one dimensional in his play. Surprisingly the scrum held up quite well but what a waste with a backline that was asleep. All three tries scored by Australia in this tournament (only three....) all scored by forwards. Try running this game plan against a savage Argentinian pack..... an improvement but nothing to start offering 9s and 8s about.. overall a 5 for effort with SA getting a 3 for turning up and that is all. Dull game all around

Why doesn't R. Deans fully utilizes the bench? Everyone knows last 20 and players should start getting replaced but he always holds back. During training does he really tell the backs to kick that much? Tis so funny with the Wallabies backs, anyone can kick away possession any time of the game. Too much aimless kicking. Are players like B.Barnes afraid to hit the line and get tackled?

I think 5 for Samo's a bit tough. I thought he was pretty good in the first half. id give him a 6 or 7.

M. Hooper was outstanding! 9/10. This is the same player who wouldn't get a chance because despite D. Pocock being out-of-form. Great performance. Q. Cooper delivered too, which was great to see. But overall, Wallabies still not convincing. Too much aimless kicking... gosh, B. Barnes is so over-rated. Lets not forget M. Harris can also kick goals. S. Timani warrants more points.

Funny - apart from his conversion kicking, Barnes was woeful. Poor kicking in general play a d offering nothing in attack. Seems all he does is stupid grubbed licks giving it back to the opposition. Not worth 7.5.

@ i agree. N.Sharpe gifted away the most penalties. He doesn't deserve 6/10. Probably 3/10. Basically, younger player like M.Hooper, S. Timani, L.Gill and the likes carried players like N.Sharpe. A player gifts penalties only when he is unfit .and not able to match the pace of the game

I think Sharpe must have conceded about 5 penalties... why the referee did not deal with the same player repeatedly offending is quite incomprehensible for me but I guess he must have his reasons... I still think that he doesn't deserve 6/10...
