Ireland lose duo for Scotland clash

14th February 2013 14:06

Ireland v England Jonathan Sexton injured

Injured hamstring: Jonathan Sexton

Ireland fly-half Jonathan Sexton and lock Mike McCarthy have been ruled out of next weekend's Six Nations match against Scotland in Edinburgh.

The duo sustained injuries in last weekend's home loss to England with Sexton limping off with an injured hamstring and lock Mike McCarthy suffering knee ligament damage.

Ireland team manager Mick Kearney revealed that neither will recover in time for the game at Murrayfield on February 24.

"Jonny's scan revealed a grade two hamstring injury," he said.

"Progress has been good so far, but it's too early to say when he will return to play.

"Mike has hurt the medial ligament of his right knee. It's quite sore and he will be in a brace for two weeks. A further review will take place in two weeks."

No one doubts what ROG did for ireland problem is its not doing Ireland any favours now. So what if we beat Scotland? We need to plan 4/5 years ahead re blooding players if we are to remain a top side. Its ok to loose games if you are building a team, trying out new moves etc. Whats not ok is playing the same team week in and week out. Surely every team we face has different strengths/weakness therefore we choose different players and tactics???

Huge respect for ROG. A king of the game. And playing for as long as you get selected is the brave way to go out. Much rather that than players leaving their country service "on a high". Well done Ronan for still being in the mix and here's to a great swan song although I'm backing Scotland so we need some more games from you. @keybone read yours after this. Good to see

The lack of loyalty to one of Irelands modern greats is staggering! ROG has pulled Ireland out of quite a number of holes down the years, yet all you bang on about is the so called 'howlers' that he's had. Anyone remember the game v Italy in Rome a few years ago? Ireland cruising towards defeat until ROG came on. For those calling for him to retire, surely thats a decision for him to make when he's ready. All he does is make himself available, its the selectors that pick him. If i declared my availability for the Lions and Gatland picks me, despite there being a thousand better players, is that my fault or his?

I feel a scottish win coming on.

I hope they do they have been so hard done by the past few years. This year they have been under rated again, but now they have a good backline they can do some damage in this tournament. Which is good alla round becuase tit will make the tournament much more competative and unpradictable.

I hope they win and make a statment. I also hope they make us (Wales) have to put up a good fight agaisnt them. It will prove what level the welsh team is at at the moment. Be two good games back to back for scotland.

If ROG starts that's only agood thing for Scotland! ROG is clearly past his best. His place and line kicking are still good quality but he's markedly slow and let's face it, he's had a few howlers over the years for Ireland and the Lions. Ireland will be beaten at Murrayfield. I'm confident of that!!

Have to agree with 99call that both Jackson and Madigan need good games this weekend to decide who should be on the bench. Pity as one should be starting with the other on the bench. What's the bets O'Gara's going to get a bit of shoeing against Scotland.

No Keatley supporters? I thought he looked to be stepping it up for a while but has fallen back again. Madigan is decent but I think Jackson is working with the more in-form back division... Confidence would be the most important quality I would say you'd want... ROG looked somewhere between disinterested and out-of-practice the last day...

Sorry for them, but at least it gives an oppotunity to play some of the younger talanted players coming though.Myself id call up Jackson of Ulster and R.Caldwell of Bath,as replacements .Even so i still expect Kidney to start ROG and DOC against Scotland.

Who is to blame for the state of irish rugby? Mr Kidney, who plays game by game and raely takes a chance? The IRFU, putting pressure on the coach to win every game? Ireland have 11 players nearly 30yrs or older, England 0. What the hell is ROG doing on the team? Is he going to make the next world cup ??? Someone somewhere in the Irish Camp must stand up and say enough, bring on the young players NOW. Let us not forget it was Gatland who threw on youth against France all those years ago BOD,ROG,Darcy,Stringer ... The old saying stays true, "Its hard to get on the Irish team but its impossible to come off it"

99call says...

Lets all be realistic here as much as we all want someone else to start ahead of ROG it isnt going to happen but we can take the point that either Jackson or Madigan will be on the bench and if ROGs old bones pack up in the Murrayfield cold then we are going to see the potential future of irish no.10 play

Its difficult to say who will be on the bench as Jackson hasnt had the best of runs recently but Madigan doesnt get to play 10 much behind Sexton so lets make sure they both play this weekend and whoever has the better game goes on the bench
