Close call for Maori re player numbers, making selection easy they only had 23 to choose from for the 23 required.
And a Taranaki connection (there has to be one) with Canada's coach Kieran Crowley - played 200 matches for Taranaki, maybe a few v Otago when Jamie Joseph was playing.

isograford - as per other thread - Each player has to have proven Maori tribal heritage/affiliation. When the squad was announced the tribal information was published for each player, for example for the Taranaki players selected it is Jarrad Hoeata (Ngati Kahungunu), Jason Eaton (Ngati Apa), Jamison Gibson-Park (Ngati Porou/Nga Tai), Andre Taylor (Ngati Tuwharetoa/Ngati Kahungunu), Kurt Baker (Ngapuhi).
I'd add that judging race/ancestry on hair/eye colour is a rather prehistoric notion.

What exactly is the criteria to play for the 'Maori'. When you see guys like Andre Taylor, Jason Eaton, Tim Bateman and quite a few others running out for them, you've got to think it must be pretty low on the quota of maori blood in your system.
I know the Aussies thought it was hilarious in the days when Tony Brown played for them, what with his blue eyes and blond hair.
