Habana out, Rhule and Brits in for Boks

28th October 2012 12:13

Raymond Rhule split with Schalk Brits

Called in: Schalk Brits

The Boks have named five uncapped players but will be without their all-time leading try-scorer, Bryan Habana, who is injured for November's Tests.

Habana was the latest key player to be added to a long injury list when he sustained a knee injury in the Currie Cup final. Scans confirmed he will miss the tour of Ireland, Scotland and England.

South Africa U20 winger Raymond Rhule, who was part of the squad that won the Junior World Championship in Cape Town earlier this year and who has shone for the Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup, was named in the squad along with uncapped Jano Vermaak, Franco van der Merwe, Lionel Mapoe and Arno Botha.

Of the five, only the 19-year-old Rhule has not been part of a Springbok squad yet this year, but his inclusion forms part of Meyer's plan to blood promising youngster for the future.

Rhule is one of five wing options with the fit-again JP Pietersen, Francois Hougaard, Lwazi Mvovo and Mapoe. Pietersen, Rhule and Mapoe can also be used at centre, while Hougaard can also play at scrum-half.

Two Springboks currently based in Europe, Schalk Brits and Gurthrö Steenkamp, have also been recalled to the national squad. Due to the significant injury toll, the national selectors will only decide on a 32nd player to be added to the squad at a later stage.

Two Springboks who missed the entire Rugby Championship because of injury, Pietersen and Chiliboy Ralepelle, are back in the squad.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer, whose squad assembles in Cape Town on Wednesday, said it was not easy to select the squad in the light of the high number of players unavailable.

Injured players that had been part of the Springbok squad thus far this year, but were not considered for selection, are Coenie Oosthuizen, Bismarck du Plessis, Tiaan Liebenberg, Andries Bekker, Siya Kolisi, Jacques Potgieter, Pierre Spies, Johan Goosen, Frans Steyn and Habana. Furthermore, Schalk Burger, Juan Smith and Heinrich Brüssow are still out.

"We've got a settled core of players that did the job during the England series and The Castle Rugby Championship and we decided to stick with them," said Meyer.

"Obviously losing so many players to injury, the latest being Coenie, Tiaan, Andries, Jacques and Bryan during the Absa Currie Cup, makes it difficult, but this now provides opportunities for other players.

"Gurthrö and Schalk are experienced front rankers who have played for South Africa before and know the conditions in the Northern Hemisphere. This tour provides a good opportunity to assess them as we plan ahead. Arno, Lionel, Franco and Jano have all been part of our squad earlier in the season.

"Raymond put up his hand for the Junior Boks and the Cheetahs and I'm very excited to see what he can do. It's also great to have JP and Chiliboy back from injury as they bring a lot of experience to the squad."

Meyer said he expected three extremely difficult Tests in Europe.

"Although the Springboks won on their last visit to Dublin (in 2010), they lost three in a row before that," he said.

"In 2010, we lost to Scotland in Edinburgh. They beat the Wallabies in Australia earlier in the year, so it won't be easy there.

"And in June we've experienced first-hand how difficult and opponent England are. They will be fired up at Twickenham and it will be a challenging Test to end the tour with.

"Our aim is to end the season on a positive note. We set ourselves high standards and we want to improve with every Test, but we have a team that is still gaining valuable experience as we strive to constantly be amongst the top sides in the world. We know we're not there yet, but we've laid a foundation in the first nine Tests this year and we will build on that.

"The World Cup in 2015 also takes place in England, so we will use this tour to see how our players adapt to the conditions as we look ahead to that very important tournament."

The Springbok squad will assemble in Cape Town on Wednesday and depart to the UK from Johannesburg on Saturday. They will return to South Africa on Monday, 26 November.

Deon Fourie must be wondering what he has done wrong, not only should he be in the squad, he should be Captain in my opinion.

Would liked to have seen Deon Fourie in the squad. Would make a brilliant and versatile impact player.

Deon Fourie (covers flank and hooker) and Gio Aplon (covers fullback and wing) should be there. Morne Steyn and Kirchner should be out.

There are better choices than ; Kirchner, Vermaak, JdV, Steyn and Ralepele, otherwise ok in view of all the injuries. Good luck Bokke.

Is Le Roux injured?

@ jaystarr

We need a talented scrum half, Pienaar is good when he plays for Ulster, but he is not Boks' level.

I do not rate Bekker that highly, would prefer somebody younger to partner with "monster" Etzebeth.

The backs lack leadership, Conrad Smith's first phase try is still hard to swallow.

Not a bad team, should do the work against the home unions.

If you take the best 15 from this touring squad and add half of the injury list:Coenie Oosthuizen, Bismarck du Plessis, Tiaan Liebenberg, Andries Bekker, Siya Kolisi, Jacques Potgieter, Pierre Spies, Johan Goosen, Frans Steyn, Bryan Habana, Schalk Burger, Juan Smith and Heinrich Brüssow- plus a few guys who will be 'discovered' in the next 2 years, then all looks OK. I don't think however that we will do so well on this tour (fingers crossed though). No matter how we do though and even with the injured guys returning, we have a long way to go to close the gap on the ABs. Also, I think that we benefit the NH by touring them at the end of the season. They learn our games and improve while we get to test a few players in different temperatures and conditions and also to test our structured game. I'm not actually looking forward to this tour and think that we should only go north every two or three years.

Very pleased to see Brits and Rhule in there, both very talented players...Brits should always have been BDP's number 2.

What is Kirschner and Vermark doing there? I am not convinced about Mapoe. Brits will be keeping the bench warm. I really hope Lambie is the starting 10. He should be given a chance ahead of Elton Jantjies. We are going backwards on the prop front. I am assuming Connie is injured. Hopefully the guys can deliver.

I am so happy for Schalk Brits that I can momentarily forgive the inclusion of Morné Steyn and Zane Kirchner (who has yet again done NOTHING to deserve to be there and everything NOT to)...

Even with all the injuries it is not a bad squad, so with the right preparation and attitude they should expect to be more than competitive. From this squad my team would be:

1-Beast Mtawarira, 2-Adriaan Strauss, 3-Jannie du Plessis, 4-Eben Etzebeth, 5-Andries Bekker, 6-Francois Louw, 7-Willem Alberts, 8-Duane Vermeulen, 9-Ruan Pienaar, 10-PATRICK LAMBIE, 11-Francois Hougaard, 12-Jean de Villiers (c), 13-Juan de Jongh, 14-JP Pietersen, 15-Jaco Taute

16-Gutrho Steenkamp, 17-Pat Cilliers, 18-Schalk Brits, 19-Juandré Kruger, 20-Marcell Coetzee, 21-Elton Jantjies, 22-Lwazi Mvovo

This way we can send on a fresh front row, which will be necessary for all the scrumming, and there will be five players in the 22 who know the NH conditions and players. With this team Hougaard can cover scrum-half, Lambie can cover full-back and Taute can cover centre if needed. Lwazi Mvovo provides the kind of spark you would want from your outside back replacement.

What do you guys think?

I love how 6ft and 16stone is considered small for a bokke player !

Nice to see S.Brits back in a bokke squad,i think he is very underrated in S.Africa, maybe because of his size, not fitting the massive image bokke fans seem to think the frontrow should have. Also nice to see Gunthro back aswell ,he will certinaly add to any bokke fromtrow, which imo has been lacking in recent years .Perhaps we will also finally see P.Lambie used as a FH ,which is also a mouthwatering prospect.Overall i feel its a very decent squad, along way from tHMs original selections ,perhaps he has finally learned Bulls rugby just doesnt workon its own today.

Nice squad apart form JDV and Kirchner. JDV not good enough any more and Kirchner has never been good enough.

De Villiers is a great guy apparently but injury prone and also prone to losing matches--long past his best---to pick him as captain is to show the good old S African dumb stubborn conservative approach that causes them to lose so many that they should win.

To change the subject--how is it that SA and Australia consistently have so many injuries and NZ so few? What are the differences in conditioning training and diet? I saw Hansen quoted as saying he thought there was a significant difference in what the ABs do during the week compared to other countries---who can elaborate?

Very pleased to see Rhule there. I cannot see how Kirchner continues to make the squad. Sarel Pretorius, Joe Pietersen and WP Nel and Le Roux must be bitterly disppointed given that Kirchner, Vermaak, CJ van der Linde and Mvovo have still been preferred to them.

Good luck to the team though.

Any signs yet of the youngster Serfontein coming through as he was brilliant at centre during the U21 RWC. Really looking forward to seeing him soon

Think the Boks need a new captain!!! Just have to look at how motivated WP were on Saturday to see what is missing in the Bok squad. Common denominator seems to be the "C"
