Pierre Spies Springboks v England 2012

Staying home in November: Pierre Spies

Bulls number eight Pierre Spies will not travel to Europe with the Springboks in November due to the slow recovery of a finger injury.

Spies underwent successful surgery on the fracture to the joint in his finger in August and was hence ruled out of the Rugby Championship has been on a rehabilitation programme and running at Loftus since.

On Thursday the Bulls captain confirmed that he will be sidelined for the remainder of the year.

"I was hoping to [play again this year], but the finger is healing slowly, so next year is more likely," Spies told SuperSport.

The news will come as blow for Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, who is short on options at number eight since Ryan Kankowski's departure for Japan.

Personnally i cant see him getting into any bokke squad ,for the aurtum tests even if fit.D.Vermulean is doing a better job ,than P.Spies ever did,and R.Kanwolski hopefully will be available come the aurtum tests. Also its time to rebuild ,and blood young talant, dont make the mistake we english did 04 ect in keeping the old gaurd around to long .Oh sorry forgot you already did in RWC 2011 .Just dont compound it by keeping them around any longer please.

All Black flanker Red Conway amputated a finger so he could tour South Africa in 1960, so he has options, so harden up !!

Of course back then you played South Africa every 5-6 years if lucky, today it is always just a year away at most

Never good to have guys injured but could be ablessing in disguise as spies has seriously not lived up to the hype.....he shows a few moments of star quality as he truly is an awesome athlete but he lacks the dog required to be a great rugby 8 and is invisible for match after match.... Fernandez lobbe and read set the bench mark for me at the moment by a country mile

It's a pity! He started out a potential great. His first injury (condition) was understandable but as Bones7 so aptly pointed out, the desire to "hurt" for that jersey seems to exist less and less in the SAFFA modern rugby era...put Geo Aplon in the team, at least he carries on playing shortly after he regains consciousness...Go Bokke!

Why would he even need a finger to lean on rucks and flex his muscles? He is far too soft for a Springbok 8. I remember AJ Venter nearly had his finger amputated just to play in a game the following week! Vermeulen is doing a much better job because he actually carries the ball hard and tackles.

Take as long as you need Spies. Were better off with Vermeulen at 8

Jeez man a finger injury? He's been that long out cause of a finger injury??!?!?

I was gonna add an insult about his toughness but i guess my first sentence is adequate enough.
