New look: Ireland's alternate strip

Ireland have launched a new alternate jersey which will be worn for the first time in their November Test series opener against South Africa at the Aviva Stadium on November 10.

Developed in consultation with Irish International players and management, the striking black and green alternate jersey marks a new departure from the traditional white and green alternate strip and will be the first non-white alternate jersey to be worn by the Irish Rugby team in a competitive match.

"With South Africa coming to town the launch of a new Ireland alternate jersey gives us an opportunity to bring some variety to how we present the Irish rugby brand," said IRFU Commercial & Marketing Director Padraig Power.

"We think the new green and black jersey looks fantastic. The style is contemporary and innovative and the team really love the look. Our feedback from supporters has been very positive and we expect it to look really strong on the pitch. We think our supporters will be delighted with it and they will wear it with pride."

"There's only one team that wears Black"....

Doesn't that make it the ideal colour for an away kit? If it only possibly clashes with one other team? MARKETING GONE MENTAL!!!!

Superdisa says..."New Zealand prime minister John Key . . ."

I saw that quote, what the Irish newspaper failed to mention was Key was speaking about the England black jersey for RWC, and that quote was made 2 August 2011 - they have taken it word for word from the NZ Stuff website and failed to mention when/why it was made. It has no relevance to this Irish jersey, media just trying to stir something up?

It's really no biggy just like when England did it. It's there alternative strip so it's not like they're gonna wear that against the abs who they are not playing this tour. No one in the abs camp has mentioned anything just a over dramatic PM and so sensitive fans. Over all 99.99% of the nz population couldn't care less

I am an ex-pat kiwi here in the states, alot of college football teams in the U.S. when facing an opponent where the black strip jersey in respect for looking like intimidating creatures when the face a team they really want to beat bad. In case of the BYU football team they wore black strip against Oregon State and they do the haka every time they face an opponent. Does that mean they copying the allblacks. No it's the ultimate compliment to a team that is known for their excellence in rugby. Nothing else.

@APV1 I am well aware of the part the English (British) played in the colonisation of NZ and their part in the Land Wars as we are now paying the compensation for the actions of those dreaded colonialists. But I'm treading on dangerous ground as the editor doesn't like posts such as this. By the way its MAORI a before o .

Anyway its a lot of nonsense. If the Irish want to wear a black jersey to duistinguish themselves from the Boks so be it after all Im sure it will have the Shamrock and not the Silver Fern on it. I just hope they dont replace O2 and put AIG on the front that would be stealing our moves lol.

@ Superdisa John Key PM of NZ is a politician and surely you dont take any notice of what a politician says? Im sure your disgraced ex PM Bertie has made his own faux pas added to his great fall from grace over his shonky deals. So just as the ex Irish PM has his problems ours is not much better .He has a very poor memory of a Mr Kim Dot Com a certain wealthy man living in his very own electorate. This man who is going through the process of becoming a citizen was spied on by the Secret Service at the bequest of yes you know who the Americans. It is illegal for this to be done under NZ law but the Yanks dont worry about our law.. So to quote John Key is quite laughable as he is a typical Pollie and I would suggest you dont take him seriously as we don't.

What's the problem? Wales has had black second shirts. No team owns a colour. Maybe when NZ have a white second shirt the English can take the pee and get all up tight about it. Anyway the shirt looks bad. Preferred the white shirt.

"New Zealand prime minister John Key described the insubordinates as ¿wannabes¿, adding: ¿There¿s only one team that wears black with pride and that¿s the All Blacks.¿ " I saw this on the irish times website. Does this mean Ireland is not going to wear their country's jersey with pride??? I know the irish might not want this jersey, nevertheless for a prime mnister of any country to say stuff like 'wannebes' is unprofessional, unresepectfull and just wrong. Anyway back to the article, i have always liked the white jersey, i hope its not completely out :(

@ Ramage - In fairness, I'm reasonably sure we had a small hand in the Moari wars and slavery too in The Land of the Long White Cloud.

@ ArmchairGeneral - I've said it before, but we won't be doing the Haka - it's disrespectful of the Moari heritage. Personally I've performed "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" on the halfway line, which was comedic, but not very ferocious. Alternatively we could get the Morris Men to do a little dance. And failing them, what about Morris Minor and the Majors? I seem to remember they once had an almighty pop hit...

I guess if being respectful got them a 0-60 scoreline they're not much to lose by insulting them. England are currently working on a Haka for November.

@APV1 as an Englishman you would well understand about culling the Irish perhaps they should be sent out to the penal colony where the black jersey is worn and respected. Oh hang on a minute the penal colony wears yellow jersies. What was I thinking? All those gentle Methodists who settled the black colony would be shuddering thinking that their great little black colony would be overun with all the papist Irishmen. Shame on you APV1 but we understand you are an Englishman.

I've no problem with the wearing of this colour on the kit, for a one off game against the Boks, don't see the issue. However it is not a very nice shirt in my opinion.
