Comeback on for Rathbone

Clyde Rathbone

To play this week: Rathbone

Former Wallaby wing Clyde Rathbone is likely to make his Super Rugby comeback for the Brumbies this week after impressing during pre-season.

After almost four years on the sidelines, the 31-year-old who captained his native South Africa at U21 level before migrating to Australia and playing 26 Tests for the Wallabies between 2004 and 2006, retired in 2009 after a spate of injuries.

He admitted publicly last year that he battled depression before deciding on a long-awaited return to the Brumbies and trying to expand on his 49 caps for the Canberra-based franchise.

Brumbies coach Jake White, who guided South Africa to the 2007 World Cup title, on Monday confirmed Rathbone would start on the wing against the Reds this coming weekend.

Always nice to see a guy come back from a spate of injuries. The question is does he have the pace to be on the wing. Almost all the S15 teams have young guys on the wings. Will be interesting to see how he can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Savea, Jane, Pietersen, et al.
