Smith joins Pocock at Brumbies

George Smith playing in Japan

In Canberra: George Smith

Former Australia back-row forward George Smith has rejoined the Brumbies on a short-term contract.

The 32-year-old Smith, a 110-test veteran, is on a contract at Japanese club Suntory which allows him short deals outside of the domestic season.

Smith, who played 128 games for the Brumbies before leaving in 2010, will come in as cover for the injured Ita Vaea, who has a heart problem.

Brumbies coach Jake White said Smith "has won Super Rugby Championships, he's won big games for the Wallabies and he's played in a Rugby World Cup final, so I want him to bring that winning culture back here to the Brumbies."

Lets just focus on the positives here. I. Vaea can not be easily replaced and G. Smith, a legend is best suited replacement. I'm sure he can trim down and will greatly boost the Brumbies, who r looking like real title contenders. Welcome back, Georgie. Your the best. D. Pocock has great opportunity to learn from you and improve hiis game.

Wow. so many uneducated posters on this site. Goerge Smith is not that old (same age as mccaw, who is still arguably the world's best no.7) Smith would still be ranked in the top ten no.7s in world rugby. As a Reds fans i hate to say it but this is a handy signing. He'll make a great bench option to allow Pocock to be rested at the end of games.

Didnt realise he is only 32. Should still be playing at the highest level and looking to the next World Cup - what has gone wrong?

At that age he does have time to retrain (and lard up even more) as a prop, and as we all know Oz could do with a decent prop.

What the hell is up with George Smith? and why would Brumbies bring him back? surely there is a fit young flanker in their set up who could keep up with the pace of the game, cost nothing extra and get some valuable super rugby experience playing with Pocock?

Are they going to play him in the front row?

He is looking more like a prop these days

New report states "George Gregan has also been sighted in training gears, and will likely start in 4 weeks time" This is all a lead up to the greatest sign up for the Brumbies this year.."David Campese will make his return to rugby, after 80 years in retirement" he will also play in his favourite position, winger!

Cant wait!!!!

Only problem is he's played in Japan against tiny forwards (he will no longer be able to bully players like he does there).

I watched him play a couple of games in Tokyo and he looked disinterested, he made basic errors in defense and the speed of the game at super rugby level will kill him.

The Brumbies are better off getting local talent that doesn't cost them a fortune.
