Johnson praises Scotland's resolve

Scotland v Italy Scott Johnson applauds

Progress: Scott Johnson

Scotland interim head coach Scott Johnson was please with his side's attitude to come back against Ireland at Murrayfield.

The hosts trailed 8-0 at one stage before coming back through four penalties from scrum-half Greig Laidlaw.

"I am happy for the boys because it showed a different side to us. We probably should have been well behind at half-time and I think we showed great resolve," said Johnson.

"If we combine the resolve and the skill-set we think we can, we can do some damage.

"I'm happy but we go back to what we originally spoke about before the game - about performance, and there is plenty in that performance that we need to improve on.

"Ireland felt they should have been well in front on the scoreboard and that creates its own pressure.

"You have to ride your luck sometimes in this game and what we can't do is get too carried away with it.

"We are proud of the victory but have to give an honest assessment that we need to improve."

Johnson refused to discuss potentially taking on the head coaching role on a permanent basis, stating he will meet with the SRU at the end of the Six Nations.

"I keep saying - let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

"I said I would sit down with the board at this completion of this, and we will do that and decide what is in the best interests of Scotland."

Decent bloke though SJ is he needs to get Scotland actually performing in order to get the job. He knows it too. We didn't perform from 10-15. Our forwards gave us the chance for that win. I don't know how much of that is down to a mediocre 10-12-13 group, or whether it is down to hoof-the-ball-from-scrum-half tactics. Suspect a bit of both. Wales will rip us a new one if we don't hit gaps and offload in the backs. Now we're stuck in a situation where we think we can win the championship so will keep the same players. Get real. Give Weir or Heathcote a shot at 10.

Scots fans in the professional era its mostly been tears... but I think that SJ has given them a decent dose of self belief.

What is up with Aussie and Kiwi coaches turning crappy North Hemisphere sides.around? Well, to be fair Scotland never should have been allowed to win this match but regardless, under SJ they have already notched up two wins and are potential contenders for the title. Amazing also that is there firat back to back swries or wins in a decade. If I was a Scot I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry!

melkdave: that's a very ego centric weird parallel to compare to?! I think Ireland fans dont need to understand pain from England fans previous irrelevant dissimilar experiences not even in the 6 nations tournament or any tournament. I doubt they have the slightest interest in anything you have to say actually.

SJ is honest at least,Scotland should have been buried by half time,But good resolute defence, and Irelands inability to take their chances, ment they where vunrable and in the end they paid the price with a loss. Now all those irish fans know the pain ,we english felt when Wales did a similar job to us ,just before the last RWC..It hurts doesnt it ,but the pain passes in time.
