26th January 2013 16:19

Peter Stringer Bath v Exeter LV= Cup

Two tries on debut: Peter Stringer

Peter Stringer scored two tries on debut for Bath to help his side to a 16-6 win over Exeter while Tigers thumped Wasps in the LV= Cup on Saturday.

Harlequins maintained their perfect record in tournament with a battling success over winless London Welsh.

Danny Cipriani scored 21 points as relegation-threatened Sale put their dismal Premiership form behind them with an easy win victory over a severely understrength Scarlets side.

In the late game, the Ospreys' defeat to the Dragons at a sodden Rodney Parade left their hopes of progressing to the play-offs hanging by a thread.

Results:
Bath 16-6 Exeter
Harlequins 23-6 London Welsh
Leicester Tigers 34-8 London Wasps
Northampton Saints 26-7 Gloucester
Sale Sharks 36-17 Scarlets
Dragons 18-14 Ospreys

Bath 16-6 Exeter
Recreation Ground

35-year-old new Bath signing Peter Stringer came off the bench to score two tries in the space of five minutes to hand the host victory.

Exeter dominated much of the first half but the scores were locked at 6-6 at the break after Stringer's double strike just before the hour mark changes the complexion of the game.

The result is Exeter's first defeat in this season's LV= Cup and they still have not beaten their west country rivals in a competitive match since 1978.

Harlequins 23-6 London Welsh
Twickenham Stoop

Harlequins went to the top of Pool One but it didn't come easily in a scrappy match full of positive intentions but short on execution.

The home side dominated the set scrum but in the loose the visitors were the masters and their hard-working pack were very unlucky to come away with no reward.

Prop Mark Lambert's try helped Quins to a 10-6 lead at half time. Ben Botica added the conversion and two penalties after the break to give Quins breathing room before hooker Dave Ward a simple try from a fluffed Welsh line-out sealed victory.

Leicester Tigers 34-8 London Wasps
Welford Road

Holders Leicester kept their LV= Cup title defence hopes alive with a five-try victory on home soil. Tigers must now win against Scarlets next week if they hope to reach the semi-finals.

England flanker Tom Croft was making only his second start since returning from a shoulder operation but he lasted only 11 minutes before going off injured.

Tigers led 15-0 at half time thanks to tries from Logovi'i Mulipola and Michael Noone.

Mathew Tait scored on the hour mark to put the result beyond doubt before Vereniki Goneva crossed twice to rub salt into Wasps wounds.

The scorers:

Dragons 18-14 Ospreys
Rodney Parade

The Ospreys' poor season just got worse and after this result even victory over Harlequins next Sunday might not be enough to quilify for the semi-finals.

Heavy rain and the referee's constant whistle made for a dour encounter that was locked at 9-9 at the interval.

A try from Jonathan Thomas put Ospreys 14-12 ahead in the second half and from there the game suddenly sprang into life in a tense finish.

Two late Steffan Jones handed the hosts victory though as Ospreys were unable to make pressure in the dying minutes pay.

Comments

makemehappy says...

@DrDeath - you walked completely into that trap. Clearly anyone can make a one off error. Unfortunately the ref in the game that you either didn't watch or can't comment on made numerous wrong calls and all in oneside's favour in relation to penalty sanctions in the tackle area. This would suggest that incompetence is an insufficient argument.

I've got to laugh at your postings. You change what you're talking about all the time and every time despite refuting every comment you are too blind to see this.

Thank-you for saying goodnight - proving you cannot answer any of the points raised.

I trust you won't be a hypocrite too and make a re-appearance.

Please only comment upon the games in future and do not make matters personal when you have no foundation to do so. I'd really rather not report this matter to the editor. Thank-you!

DrDeath says...

@makemehappy

There it is!!

Refs make errors in favour of Welsh teams but are "biased lunatics" when making decisions against them-as you have just admitted.

At least it is now obvious where the actual "bias" lies!

Thank you and goodnight!

makemehappy says...

@DrDeath - not sure why you expect me to respond when you don't. Did you watch the match, and what is your view on the inconsitency in issuing cards?

Really is that simple.

Don't recall Wales v Scotland being in the LV cup last weekend, but that was simply an error. He missed it. The ref did not miss the issues on the weekend, he failed to act consistently - a bit like a biased lunatic!

Now if you want me to rip your arguments to shreds and embarass you carry on. If not, stop talking rubbish or reply belatedly to my questions.

DrDeath says...

@makemehappy

missed my point AGAIN!

Simple example so you can keep up:

Mike Phillips scores try vs Ireland after illegally taken quick throw (different ball used).

Jonathan Kaplan awards try incorrectly.

Was Mr Kaplan:

1. Biased?

2.In error?

Please answer as this simple exercise will confirm that you have finally understood the nature of my complaint then we can move on!

makemehappy says...

@DrDeath - come on - be fair - you made a mistake!

Re-read the first sentence of your initial post and then simply acknowledge I've refuted it.

The rest of your comments are now supprting a claim of bias. Sadly you have no foundation. I have asked you to analyse the game and you haven't so you have no argument.

I do think he was biased with the yellow card decisions and to an extent that he behaved in an idiotic manner.

I have already stated that I don't think it impacted on the result so time for you to move on.

Posted 17:16 29th January 2013

DrDeath says...

@makemehappy

missed/ignored it again!

My point is not about the referee at all (although you still think it is obviously).

My point is you cannot constantly go round saying people have sanity issues and are DELIBERATELY favouring another team over the Welsh heroes!

Clearly cuts to the reputation, integrity and private life of the individual in question! Your comments are not about rugby!

I really can't explain it to you any clearer than that!

Posted 15:21 29th January 2013

makemehappy says...

@DrDeath - I didn't miss your point, you simply just didn't state it well. Look at the yellow cards issued and compare with those that should have been issued to Sale. You'll have little doubt then.

As for libellous - I don't think so on any grounds.

Posted 12:53 29th January 2013

DrDeath says...

@makemehappy

as usual you missed my point!

saying the that the referee was inconsistent and to the detriment of the Scarlets is a perfectly reasonable statement.

To call him a "biased lunatic" smacks of slightly crazed conspiracy theories and is frankly possibly libellous!

Referees may be inconsistent, you may disagree with their decisions but to keep playing this "bias" card is a bit pathetic!-mate

Posted 08:37 29th January 2013

makemehappy says...

@DrDeath - yes of course they have. Bit of a daft comment by you really to think that anyone would state otherwise. I'm sure if you saw the game you would acknowledge that the refereeing was far from consistent and to the detriment of the Scarlets. I still think they would have lost however. Think you need to look for a new record to try and break - hey mate!

Posted 18:12 28th January 2013

DrDeath says...

@makemehappy

Has a welsh team EVER lost a game where the referee was not criminally culpable?

It's becoming a bit of a broken record mate!

@ ArmchairGeneral - if he continues as he is and Claassens does move on, we might be able to keep him. he's only in as injusy cover at the moment, but neither Cook nor McMillan are really that good yet.

Nice to see the ref in the Sale v Scarlets game being a completely biased lunatic in favour of the home team. Absolutely disgraceful refereeing! Hope we never see him again.

Quinns! What depth. Noon of the top players in there even on bench, and still a good win. Saints! Should have rested Pisi and perhaps some others in there too. Same old Mallinder. Not surprised re Exeter vs Bath as their game previously vs Leinster was huge and they really must have exhausted themselves with that.
