Johan Goosen: Tore knee ligaments

Springbok fly-half Johan Goosen's season is over after he tore knee ligaments in Saturday's Rugby Championship loss to the All Blacks.

Goosen will see two more specialists on Tuesday, after the first two doctors who examined him differed on whether or not he needed to have an operation immediately.

If the operation goes ahead, he will be out of action for close to six months, but if there is no surgery, he will be sidelined for six weeks and is therefore unlikely to play any part in the Springboks' end-of-year tour.

Free State Cheetahs team doctor Ian Morris said Goosen would be "very lucky" to play again this year.

"He's done his medial collateral ligaments and we picked that up on the MRI scan, but the lucky thing is that none of the other ligaments have been damaged," he told Supersport.

"We've decided to get a few more specialists to give an opinion before we decide if we need to operate or not.

"Regardless of whatever course of action is decided, I feel he would be very lucky to make the end-of-year tour. I could be wrong but with these types of injuries, it is never a good idea to rush a player."

Morris said Goosen told him he sustained the injury during an unfortunate clash of bodies during the game.

"He said it was when a player's body fell onto the front part of the knee during the close clashes in the game," he revealed.

Morris said if it was decided to operate, then Goosen would go under the knife "within a day or two" in Bloemfontein so that the recovery process can begin almost immediately.

A new lease of life for M.Steyn. H. Meyer should not keep forgetting about P. Lambie.

J. Goosen is a major loss.

Big blow for the goose and the bokke imo,he showed such potential before getting injured.again.Also i suspect he needed a few full games to get settled to the pace .intensity ect of international rugby, after missing so much of the S15 season. That he wiil be back ive nodought, but i think HM will return to M.Styen now for the aurtum tests, and that imo is a step bavckwards

Why did HM kept him on the field for about 5min after his injury? Maybe his radio can only transmit and the medical staff could not inform him about Johans shot knee...

Anyway it is a shame for the Cheetahs and Boks. Hope the rest of his career is not marked by injuries.

He should have been taken off as soon as he showed signs of distress. He may well have aggravated it trying to make a try saving tackle. Poor judgement by Meyer.

Wish him the best for a complete recovery.
