Overlooked: Dan Carter

All Blacks pivot Dan Carter has failed to make the shortlist for New Zealand's top rugby award, despite being named IRB Player of the Year last week.
Instead, the three in the running for the accolade are All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw, number eight Kieran Read and centre Conrad Smith. Bookmakers, including Paddy Power, have installed the former as their favourite to lift the title.
The winner will be announced in Auckland on Friday, meaning there is still plenty of time for rugby betting fans to back their favourite.
The award was won by Jerome Kaino in 2011 and Read the year before.
The Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year nominations are All Blacks full-back Israel Dagg, loose forward Liam Messam and scrum-half Aaron Smith. This award was won by All Blacks number nine Piri Weepu in 2011.
New Zealand Rugby Awards nominations:
Kel Tremain Memorial Player of the Year: Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Conrad Smith
Tom French Memorial Maori Player of the Year: Israel Dagg, Liam Messam, Aaron Smith

Super Rugby Player of the Year: Craig Clarke, Aaron Cruden, Conrad Smith

JayStarr -what a bizarre statement: 'If you take away the tries they scored/created last year . . . ' well wouldn't that be the same if you took the top two performing players out of every side?
Rubbish.

worldwide condemnation of richies playing style.
and of his demeanour and lack of class and sportsmanship.
great player of course, in his day past his best now , and went AWOL as captain against england...as he has done when the ABs get put under pressure. which is why he wasn't man of the match in the world cup final -and never will be - and wasn't IRB player of the year.
..cue outrage and indignation, LOL.

ritchie by a mile.. he shouldve got irb player of the ear too!..unlucky not to get it last year!!..he is way more influential than dan, plus ritchie has taken his game to another level as he is now an effective fetcher and carrier! Dan on the other hand has only played a handful of games and has been very average
the reason i believe dan isnt nominated is bc the nominations came from NZ ers who could clearly see hes not at his best... as opposed to an international panel who may have some bias against ritchie bc of his success as capain of the Abs and bc of the world wide condemnation of his playing style.

@Carpelone, yes of course I do listen and am sure has learnt a lot that these nominations do not always go with what I think (eg. IRB with Farrell WTF) - but then that doesn't matter because the IRB Panel has made its decision.
@Tuffnut - NO I do not speak for anyone else nor the NZRU (am not a NZer - thank God) but my point remains that no one GAF what you or I think

@Ripzy007 it may be true that muppets like you may don't personally care what rugby supporters from other countries think but sorry mate you don't speak for all NZers with your thick comment. As @carpelone rightly eluded to here, most people commenting on here are genuine rugby supporters with valid opinions and if national boarders stops you from appreciating the form of different rugby players then I would say you are not a true rugby supporter. Perhaps it's time to take that lime out of your bottom put it in a Corona and come back when you've got something intelligent to add to a rugby forum.

Indeed Rugby Rockstar.... How dare Owen Farrel not be nominated... Considering his massive contribution to not only English rugby but world rugby in general. Why he wasn't nominated for a knighthood and the Nobel prize is beyond me.....the injustice....He should be nominated for every award in every country.....

Jaystarr is a die hard Western Province fan, so praising Michalak should cost him quite something.
Re the Prize, NZRU spotted on! Can't think of a better selection, McCaw and Aaron Smith should get the award.
McCaw was awesome and he didnt even have to cheat too much. Smith added tempo and eagerness to New Zealand's game. I would have bet on Perenara being AB's new 9 (pity he got injured), but Smith was really something. Well done, lads.
I am even considering buy McCaw's book.
Happy Xmas to all.

@ kinsman: I specifically referred to the PR Team of the Year in my post, and that is what I talked about mainly. But even if we take just international performances, Michalak still beats Dan Carter this year (if you want to select a 10) - he basically played the same amount of games. As for NZ Player of the Year, I agree with McCaw, Smith and Read. Cruden would be 4th on my list.
@ mew2000: VERY interesting point. The Chiefs were brilliant this year, but most of that brilliance came from Cruden and SBW, who were playing next to each other and dividing defences... And then you had Taumololo who was a sure try within 5m of the try line (and ended up being one of the top try-scorers in the tournament!) The momentum these guys gave that team was immense. So you can't help wondering whether the Chiefs will be the same team next year without SBW and Taumololo. If you take away the tries they scored/created last year, they wouldn't have even topped the NZ conference. So Cruden will definitely carry more weight and expectation on his shoulders... (But he is such an incredible player, I am not betting against him pulling it off!)

@jonesy2: I told you before, you haven't any credibility when you are talking about NH players as you don't have any clue of what is going on here. All your pervious posts proved me right. Michalak has been playing great all year and deserved a mention. Of course, he is not from Australia so you barely know his name...

it will be interesting to see how cruden goes next year with no SBW, SBW helps take the heat of cruden alot to do his thingI actually I think the hurricane No 10 is better...

If this is taking into account Super 15, ITM and Tests, then the award is a a toss-up between Read & Smith , the best forward and back easily by a country mile.
RM & DC are there because of their reputation and the Generally Accepted Principle that in their position, they are the best in the world.
Both RM & DC were absent for long periods in the S15 and I'm not sure if they played any ITM matches.
Read is the best 8 I have seen since Zinzan Brooke and Conrad Smith is the complete center IMHO. They shud share it :)

yep makes sense. conrad, kieran and richie all had better years. we know the IRB award is a joke (not taking anything away from dan i mean you cant say he wasnt good enough to win it its just that there are about 5 or so AB's alone that also could have won it), the evidence is in farrell and michelak getting nominated.

@Jaystarr, I realise you have a bit of a love thing going on for Freddie but please advise me..... why would he be nominated for 1) New Zealand player of the year? 2) International player of the year based on his Sharks performance (recall he only started for France in 4 internationals and wasn't selected for the 6 nations team).
Perhaps South Africa can select him as their player of the year considering that was where he played most of the year....

I would have no complaints if Sir Richard won but I think Read was simply better this year. Richie gets the publicity but KR is quietly being effective in every phase of the game...

McCaw won IRB in 2010, but Read won NZ.
IRB process for selection is well documented and most years there is 'massive' debate. From my view, 03, 05, 06, 07, 10 were the only years I agreed. O'Driscoll, Du Preez were clear winners in 08 and 09. The rest anyone's pick.
