Pocock over McCaw?

A coin toss at best in a sub par year performance wise for Richie.

I doubt he will quibble over this poll while quaffing beverages from the Webb Ellis trophy. Boo Yah!!

@Phill_Moore - I certainly agree with most of your comments. For me its the big games that couldn't and Pocock didn't star in them. As for North, I agree that O'Connor is fine wing (fine player, full-stop and a must for any 15). I think Jane is competent but not as good as North, and as for the others you mention, they simply aren't in the same league as North.

@Phill_Moore - come on - North has a superb year. Huge impact on games. A very difficult person to oppose in that position I'd say.

David Pocock???? Hard to believe! He is a first class player, but really didn't have the same impact as any of the others mentioned in that position - not even close!

@isthatrightref

totally agree, bring it on PR...after all referees are a major "entertaining" feature in modern rugby. they deserve to be considered for a poll.

@ maria14 says... in a RWC year, performances in that are always going to carry more weight than in 6n, H-Cup, S15 etc months earlier: 3N this year counts for little as only the Wobblies played their best side every round (as they must, their depth being what it is).

Hard to disagree with the XV except perhaps North who's certainly big but that's about it, and Carter who was injured for so much of the year. Pocock v McCaw & Kaino v Dusautoir are imo 50/50 calls - surprised O'Brien came 2nd tho - & a bit sneaky of PR to name a reserves bench without giving we punters the chance to vote for it - e.g. I'd imagine plenty of votes for Weepu as cover for 9 & 10?

Sorry to all who think otherwise but, whilst he is a legendary, generation best player, Richie McCaw didn't get my vote. Best openside of the last decade, yup, but he's been injured a lot this last year and has had some quiet games (must un-McCaw like!!). That takes nothing away from his achievements this year or any other!!! A bit surprised Warburton got no mention but then again he was a latish arrival and like it or not the red card was a blemish.

I'm a big Ireland, Leinster & Healy fan, but I still feel he may be sneaking in here on the back of a big hit on Quade Cooper and securing alot of the Kiwi vote!

maria14 says...

this was supposed to be team of the YEAR, by year you are supposed to consider the H-Cup, Super Rugby, Currie Cup, Top 14, Pro 12, Premership, etc. it seems to me that all the votes have been based on the WC.

i dont argue with the team above, some of the guys were in my XV selection. but George North, Quade Cooper, Bismarck du Plessis, Dan Carter??? how their inclucsion be jusified!!!

North does not know the basics of being a winger!

Cooper..... does not have a kicking, cant tackle, Genia pulled him through the Super Rugby in 2011, he only impressed against the weaker teams and went missing in the big games.

Bismarck du Plessis... i know he was allowed to play for skarks and Bokke due to "politics" but i feel there are better options for hooker, Servat or Struss (Leinster). i think in 2012 if he stays injury free he will command the number 2 shirt for both Sharks and Bokke.

as for 10... dan will always be in the top 2 or 3 positions for out-half of the year that is a giver and he is genious at what he does, but Sexton was great (even though it pains me to say as i am munster chick), kidney should have made him number 1 10 for the WC, jonny pulled Leinster back into the final of the H-Cup when they were dead and buried at half time. Nick Evans should have been in the reckoning also has he was pulling the strings of Harliquins win over munster in Thomand park, to their success in the Amlin final and then kept their season perfect check until they met toulouse two weeks ago, but even yesterday he commanded his troops to beat Toulouse in "La Stadium", Tran-Duh was great in the Top 14, Morné steyn was good in the WC (slotted all his kicked when other were difting wide), but carter??? missed alot of Super Rugby, was never challenged in the WC until he was injuried, his Tri-nations was poor by his standards. he does not deserve it!!

oh i could go on! xx

McCaw over Pocock - if only on the basis of one game - the final. But if one wants an objective decision - look at the OZ v NZ match - McCaw played him off the park injured or no..................

If this was a Poll on the Best Team of Last Quarter of the year or the decade Richie McCaw would win by Light Years and it wasn't so. So be done with it people... By the way Sir Richie is my Fav rugby player of all time.

BDAUSSIE says...

Still have no idea how Matfield gets in ahead of Horwill. Matifield made absolutely NO impact in the Super 15 and was just as unimpressive in the tri-nations. He played ok in the world cup. Horwill on the other hand was a standout all season for the Reds, lead his team ot the premiership, was one of the stand-out performers in the tri-nations where he lead his team to victory and was one of the few wallabies that wasnt out of form at the World Cup.

Yes Matfield did a number on the less experienced Horwill at line-out time in the 1/4 final match, but nevertheless Horwill was outstanding around the park in that game, again lead his team to victory (i see a pattern here) and scored the decisive try in that match.

So yes other than the fact that Matfield clearly schooled Horwill at line-out time at the world cup, Horwill has consistently been a star in 2011, whilst Matfield really didn't achieve anything.

I should point out that I'm a massive Matfield fan. He's one of the best of all time, but it's hard to measure his handful of quality games in 2011 against a bloke who has consistently made an impact over 9 months.

George North? George North?

You would think there was a place for James O'Connor, ideally in the replacements where he would cover so many positions.

But my choice at right wing, because he was so versatile, so creative from anywhere on the field, such a geat asset under the high ball and in all his defensive play, is Cory Jane. More intelligence on those shoulders and in any one of his limbs than in all of George North. But a lot of Welshmen do visit this site.

Otherwise the team pretty much picks itself, and is a good one, and I have only a few quibbles. I still prefer Kieran Read to Harinordoquy. I don't think Israel Dagg is yet the player that Kurtley Beale is. So it's Beale for me. Neither is Victor Matfield the player that he was. Question is, who would displace Matfield? The world is not well stocked with great locks -- a couple of Wallabies might be mentioned but look how the Boks cleaned out the Aussie lineout in the world cup. And without McCaw or Dusautoir starting, Matfield has to be your captain.

The reserves are the big problem, not least because few readers offered their selections there, and so the choices above are next in, rather than specific selections as reserves. Mike Phillips might be a good starter at halfback, but does he bring on to the field the incisive intelligence that Piri Weepu does? Weepu reads the game from the sideline better than anyone. And he offers cover at flyhalf and goalkicker. A reserve trio of Weepu, O'Connor and take your pick of Dagg (Beale starting)/Ashley-Cooper/Kahui makes better sense.

As for the forward reserves, just who is your fetcher/snaffler if Pocock goes off? (Look what happened to the Boks when they lost Brussow). Does O'Brien, fine player that he is, offer the prowess at the breakdown, not to mention leadership qualities and carrying intelligence, of McCaw or Dusautoir?

Its interesting that people feel being on a winning team should influence their vote.

If a player is individually brilliant, and they are in fact the best in their position; isn't that enough? Besides, if a player still dominates and does well on a loosing team, that should make him seem even greater right?

StunTheMullet says...

Seems the McCaw 3 times IRB Player of the Year denial got in the way of any form of voting sensibility despite him outplaying the one dimensional Pocock with one foot in the RWC semi final.

So the question is - would you rather play with McCaw in your team or against him?

The naysayers, true to form, appear to prefer to get yet another spanking at the hands of Riche in the opposition.
