Hat-trick hero: Simon Zebo

Munster wing Simon Zebo bagged a hat-trick of tries to help his team qualify for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals after beating Racing Metro 29-6 at Thomond Park on Sunday.

Needing maximum points to qualify for the play-offs, Munster's bonus-point win means two-time defending champions Leinster bow out of the tournament.

Racing Metro, who had no chance of reaching the last eight, were out to play the spoilers role. And for a small portion of the match, they didn't disappoint - despite losing flank Antoine Batut to a red card in the sixth minute.

The loose forward was given his marching orders immediately by Wayne Barnes after the referee spotted Batut drop his knee into Keith Earls at the bottom of a ruck.

Whilst the French outfit's loss was Munster's gain, 14-man Racing Metro continued to make a game of it and were on the board first thanks to a penalty kick by full-back Gaetan Germain.

Scoreless after 25 minutes, Munster finally hit their straps and crossed for two tries in the space of two minutes.

First, scrum-half Conor Murray powered over after breaking off the back of a rolling maul, before Zebo found himself on the receiving end of a three-man overlap and finished off in the corner. Ian Keatley converted one of the two five-points and Munster fans were slightly more relieved with the 12-3 scoreline.

Germain closed the gap to six points with another penalty kick in the 31st minute, but Munster banked their third try soon after when hooker Mike Sherry crossed the whitewash off a line-out and drive.

Keatley was once again unable to add the extras, but the red army were one more try and forty minutes away from achieving a place in the knock-out stages at half-time (17-6).

Munster were breathing fire in the second half and it was only a matter of time before the all-important fourth try would arrive. And when it did, it was one to behold.

After Doug Howlett was denied earlier by the dead-ball line following a moment of brilliance from the former All Blacks wing, the ball was shifted to Zebo who showed some expert finishing to collect a grubber kick ahead to clinch the vital bonus-point his team required to maintain progress in the competition.

Zebo completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute with another piece of magic to secure the victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

Strange not to have Leinster in the Heineken! But thats the price we pay for being slow out of the blocks. Couple of points tho, not a hope that was a red card, simply a yellow at worst! No contact made and no real force put into it. WAYNE BARNES RUINS RUGBY! Don't get me wrong i still think Munster would have done it and fair play to them but this woefully wrong red ruined the game as a contest in the 6th minute. Zebo, stormer! Great game and a great prospect. We all know how much of a loss O'Connell is but to have Ryan step in you'd hardly notice his absence!

can there be any doubt that leinster will win the amlin?

bear in mind, they are the only pro12 team in it.

all the other teams have 15 or so competitive games to play by the end of the season.

leinster have 3.

if they don't win, at home, versus tired/disinterested opposition, they truly are chumps!

Doubt it will be, the final is in the RDS. Leinster don't know how to win finals there

leinster_goy, that is absolutely immense. You are like a 3 year old that's been told he's not allowed to have ice cream today.

An undoubted talent with a great future.

But please, please quit the over-celebrating after a try! Smacks of Ashton at best.

What next? Pulling your shirt over your head? Baiting the crowd? Racist comments?

The sort of stuff football games are made of...

@ melkdave - Like Edinburgh in last year's Pro12, why should they bother turning up, when it's a no-win situation? Keep your players fit for the T14 instead.

@ liam2me - you're a blast - a really funny guy. I bet you're the Big Dog in your playground with humour like that! "Premiershit" - now that's brilliant! I bet you made that up all on your own, with no help at all. Well done. I'm going to use your comment as inspiration now and call the Rabo, the "Poo12". Ha! D'ya see what I did? POO12. Poo! He-he! Poo-poo jokes are fun, aren't they? I'm almost as funny as you now. This'll be even funnier when you get to middle school.

leinster_goy, would you please try to have a bit of dignity? We all know Leinster are a better team than Munster at the moment, but your childish comments really make you look pathetic.

Can't realistically see Munster progressing beyond the quarters. Unfortunate really, I'd have given Leinster good odds of beating Quins away so a definite missed opportunity, at least 3 or 4 tries left on the field between the last two rounds.

I think Ulster have the goods to edge out Saracens and home advantage after that should see them through to the final against Clermont.

@pantreac

A little bitter are we? Good.

Sending off was justified, he clearly kneed O'Donnell in the head. Kilcoyne was immense. Keatley needs to start, got the backline moving. Earls got better as game went on. Good to see Munster get job done, still more work to do

Well done Barnes for giving Munster the bonus point - an insane red card decision!

Grrrrrrr ... oh well. After the predicted Montpellier win it was a weird scenario hoping Munster wouldn't do it. We did it to ourselves with a home loss v ASM. Munster and Ulster have the real Leinster fans support in the QFs. Good Luck

These pools are daft - how have Munster qualified, but not Leinster? Pathetic!

As ArmchairGeneral notes - Quins are now favourites in the QF's!
