Late sexton drop saves Leinster

15th September 2012 19:57

Leinster PRO12 Jonathan Sexton pass

Winning drop: Jonathan Sexton

Leinster needed a last-minute drop-goal from Jonathan Sexton to edge Treviso 19-18 at Stadio di Monigo on Saturday.

Treviso, who have beaten the reigning PRO12 champions the Ospreys and put up a good fight against Munster already this season, started brightly and they had the better of the Heineken Cup holders in the first half.

After Alberto di Bernardo had kicked them into an early lead, a yellow card for Leinster flanker Kevin McLaughlin gave them a one-man advantage and they duly capitalised as Robert Barbieri powered his way over from a quickly taken penalty.

The conversion was missed and the Irishmen held on until they were restored to their full complement, after which Sexton managed to slot over a penalty to reduce their arrears slightly but they went into the half-time interval 8-3 behind.

Leinster came out firing at the start of the second half though and the talismanic figure of Brian O'Driscoll showed that he still has plenty left in the tank ahead of the Lions' tour to Australia next summer as he crossed to level the scores.

Sexton kicked the conversion and added a penalty about 10 minutes later to open up a five-point lead for his side but the Italians refused to let the opposition get away and replacement Kris Burton pegged them back with three points.

Sexton restored the five-point lead with around five minutes left to play but the men from Dublin were left stunned when replacement scrum-half Fabio Semenzato crossed moments later and Burton knocked over the conversion to put the hosts in the lead.

With time ticking away it looked like Treviso were going to be able to boast a win against both of last season's PRO12 finalists but they were left heartbroken as Sexton stepped up to slot over a last-minute drop-goal for Leinster.

Treviso will be encouraged once again by their performance but the losing point will feel like scant consolation after coming so close to victory.

Leinster, meanwhile, will be delighted to have snatched the win after another patchy early-season performance.

@ Tesh - the French teams have the biggest budgets in the world, not to mention a huge pool of elite players to chose from and i assure you, the french teams that are competitive in the heineken cup aren't worried about relegation with plenty of whipping boys to make up the bottom of the top 14 table.

hmmm. 2011. a game where dusautoir and jauzion had to start from the bench because they were injured, leaving poitrenaud at centre and bouilhou capt. and we still managed to be in the lead 20-16 after an hour, away from home, with knackered troops.... pas si mal que ca mon ami!!

you seem to have skipped 2010?

@Trollousain

you say "troll", i say "objective statement of fact". en tout cas je crois que c'est toi qui trolles en fait

as for video analysis, no need to fret. a toulousain like yourself will find the following sources very useful indeed:

Leinster 32-23 toulouse (2011)

Leinster 20-13 toulouse (2008)

toulouse 35-41 Leinster (2006)

strange that you troll on your own pages mr goy? "the best side in the NH (club or international)" hmmm. nice way to win friends and influence people. say something provocative that is likely to inflame 95% of the people. smart.

your point about tv coverage is entirely fair and i agree with 100%. how is my team supposed to do video analysis of your team, if your team is not even on tv?

the powers that be should hang their heads in shame. here was a match between, on the one hand, the best side in the NH (club or international) and the greatest team of our generation, and on the other hand, a very competitive and ever-improving italian club - both teams with a host of internationals playing - and it wasn't even being broadcast on TV

if the best TeeJee Ca-har can do is stream only half of a game online (they couldn't even stream all of it, and most of the time there was no audio), then they shouldn't have been allowed to obtain the rights to the pro12, or the heineken highlights for that matter

this is the kind of thing that will destroy rugby in ireland. i bet all the GAA heads are rubbing their hands in glee at all of this

Mr Right. I don't mean to be smart. I'm just jealous of your system. And sad that my beloved team gets beaten up every week. All the best to you and the men in blue :-)

@Toulousain

Instead of posting smart comments, Maybe you should focus on your own teams issues, such as.....how many more imports you need to sign with your huge budget in order to win the H Cup back.

If Leinster choose to prioritise the H Cup, then that's up to them. Toulouse have done the same many times. However 3 League finals in the last 3 years shows the league matters very much to Leinster.

Sounds like it was a good game. Too bad TG4 and RTE decided to show replays of football instead of this game...

Exactly, because Leinster dont have to give a hoot about relegation or heineken cup qualification

"another patchy early-season performance". hmmm. maybe. but the important thing PR doesn't mention is: IT DOESN'T MATTER IN THE SLIGHTEST.

it's just another warm-up training run ahead of the HCup games to come......
