Lol is JDV grooming himself for a political career he has certainly adopted the spin of the pollies.

Loved some of the comments on here well done saffas. Will be intersting to see what Meyer, and JDV asw ell, says if they are beaten by the Woeful Wallabies next week.

The only attack which I thought was "quite good" was the run from Frans Steyn which resulted in a try... Kicking up-and-under after up-and-under, or simply kicking the ball away, do not count as attacks. At all.

The Boks were very worrying in the breakdowns, line-outs, defending and handling departments. What is the thought process anyway? "Ooh, we're not faring so well. Uhmm... I know, let's kick the ball away! Yes, that's a great idea!" Except it isn't!

Here's a rather more accurate description: "We were overall quite mediocre".

Agree Boks attack was quite good. Unfortunately Arggies defence was quite good too. Boks are a quite good team that can draw with other quite good teams. If they're happy with that, good on them; let's watch them slide down the rankings to a quite good position of around 5th or 6th.

@zambokke: You hit the nail on the head with your comparison of our backs against the All Blacks. Glad to hear there is someone else who does not pay extensive homage to our back-up loose forwards. Smith in his prime trumps Coetzee and Potgieter every time.

Dreaming of yesteryear already - Juan, Schalk, Brussow causing chaos, securing ball and making the other teams think about their game plan. Until we can secure quick ball and control the breakdown, how can JDV etc attack? I'm not sure that we have the experience or ability at 6,7,8 for this level although some of the guys have great potential. We need a secure platform. I have no worries re 1-5 apart from the injury to Bismark and Bekker's lack of tackling/injured back. All of the backs in NZ know which position they will play in and what their specialised role is - our backs mainly seem to be utilty backs who can adapt. Who can put their money on it where F.Steyn, Lambie, Pienaar, Hougaard will (if) play throughout the tournament? All of them have flair and can attack and defend as well as anyone, but they can only plan as far as their next game for a particular position or plan. Reading back on this, not sure if it makes complete sense?

JDV is sounding like PDV.

APV1 says...

"The attack was quite good at times." But not good enough. You can't be "quite" anything at this level. You must be excelling in every facet. When you're in the top 10 in the world (and always much higher, if you're a Bok), then "quite good" is no-where close.

"We maybe need to improve 40 percent but the margins are very small in Test rugby." - has anyone taught basic mathmatics to him? 40% is not a small margin.

This is a press statement right out of the PdV handbook - a lot of nonsense and rubbish.

JdV needs to exert his authority on the camp and the squad. As scot_rsa suggests, he has the talent. Surely it's one of the roles of the captain to have a quiet word with the coach and point out problems with the game plan. Tell the coach what you want to be doing, not just accept what they tell you and implement their plan. Not in public and not in front of the other players. But as a captain you have to represent the players and articulate their feelings to the coach.

Should of read could of been dangerous on attack if they turned up and changed game plan.

Let's hope it is just a blip and they respond. HM needs time so let's afford it to him. Going back to jake who had a disastrous year before world cup and pulled it off when players came back from injury.

Back three will change, bismark will come back, Peterson to return. In the mean time the new guys are getting valuable experience at this level. Goosen in the fold so not all so bad.

@SACanuck

Couldn't agree more. Not sure if you've read it yet but I'd say Jake White's assessment of this team's strategy is spot on. While I am not a huge Jake fan, he seems to have made the right call on this one.

Are you KIDDING me..!? I just lost a massive amount of respect for Jean de Villiers. I don't even know where to begin... Suffice to say I think the Boks are f*!k$d.

I can only remember SA breaking one tackle and that was because the defender took a bang and look concussed or injured. Why can't players just be honest and admit it was poor or it just didn't work on the day. To say it was good just makes annoys the fans even more!

scot_rsa says...

When JDV isn't shackled by formulaic setplays, structures, worries about percentage improvements in execution etc he's a very fine player. Wish these shackles were just relaxed a bit for the whole team and their natural talent and brains to make snap decisions were exercised. Too much theory and coaching, I would love to see JDV, Habs, Frans, Lambie just "try something", the opposition would be surprised!

Ripzy007 says...

JDV your beginning to sound like RD, 'we are good at attaching this and attacking that' and when its game time, its only from 1 - 10 rugby, and limited ball you get you run sideways...IMHO this is just cheap talk

'Springbok captain Jean de Villiers insists that although his team were disappointed by their draw with Argentina there are positives to be taken from the match in Mendoza. '

The only positive I can think of is that the match is over.
