Stormers: Rain on Force's parade

The Stormers ended their Australasian tour on a high after beating the Western Force 17-3 in Perth on Saturday.

It wasn't pretty - the weather or the match - but the visitors got the job done, outscoring their hosts two tries to nil and head home with 13 points in the bag in what has been a very successful road trip.

Played in wet conditions, an open game of running rugby was shelved when the two teams took to the field. But the visitors adjusted accordingly and handled the slippery ball better than the Force, who failed to stamp any authority on the match despite taking an early lead though the boot of fly-half David Harvey.

Instead, it was the South Africans who took control and showed their class that's helped them along to eight wins from nine outings thus far in the competition.

In contrast, the Force's seventh loss of the season all but ended their slim finals hopes, with the franchise a worrying 14 points adrift of the Brumbies with just seven games remaining.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee will be pleased with the performance of his rookies, who once again were impressive in the absence of injured stars Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulen as Nizaam Carr filled the void with aplomb in his first Super Rugby start while Siya Kolisi did his reputation no harm.

The visitors took the lead when Bok wing Bryan Habana latched on to a Harvey pass and scooted half the length of the field for a try under the posts. But replays showed the ball actually slipped out of Habana's arms just centimetres short of the tryline, with the referees not close enough to see the mistake.

Grant added the conversion from bang in front and the Stormers held on to their four-point (3-7) lead for the rest of the half.

The Force were forced to watch Grant knock over a penalty just three minutes into the second half that increased the Stormers' lead to seven points.

The Stormers pivot then struck again a few minutes later with a converted try to give his team plenty of breathing space, and the Force with a mountain to climb.

@ Trinats 2 - >"reality will hit home when you play a decent team with no injuries or a saffa ref to help you out."

While it would be nice to believe that this is the whole of the explanation, when I recall the Highlanders vs Stormers game the fact remains that the near-top-of-the-table Highlanders were simply outclassed.

The Stormers keep reminding me of a test-match team.

@bokavenger

"Cheetahs butchered this one spectacularly. Only reason Haskell avoided a red card was clearly because of Lyndon Bray's bleating this week about Marius Jonker's performance against the Bulls. No idea why Kiwis continue to be in control of refereeing when they're clearly so blatantly biased"

Hahahahahahahahaha

@ Stellenbosched... Stormers are ahead on the table as they've 8 wins v Bulls 6 but you're right, bonus points or the lack thereof may come back to bite them big time: instead of a week off you could be looking at hosting the Highlanders for a semi-final berth, most likely (under this scenario) in Hamilton... meanwhile the top aussie side gets a home qualifier, hardly seems fair does it?

Only kiwi refs cheat & only to bail out cheating kiwi teams therefore Habana's try must have been kosher...

The force have claimed the crusaders scalp a few times in the past when the crusaders were on there way to a title. They looked in one of those moods against the stormers but the stormers did the business without playing to there potential. Don't worry stellenbosched the stormers will be there.

@Stellenbosched:

Nick Mallet made an interesting comment before the game; he said the "flair has been coached out of the Stormers" in order to accomodate a strict defensive structure. Will that be enough? Considering the way the Chiefs and now the Crusdaders are playing I'm begining to doubt our chances.

Trinuts, you're right. Ref made a mistake with Habana's try so score should be 10-3 to Stormers. Oops, they still win. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

Goodness - what a bunch of sore losers! There was no detailed analysis to show whether or not Habana scored - it would still have required close-up scrutiny from multiple angles to show whether or not the ball was grounded before or on the line. Forward passes are also not as clear cut as you believe. Fact is that the Force were never in this game and got owned by one of the best teams in the comp. As a Stormers fan, I'm not worried as we've beaten plenty of almost all the quality teams in this comp (bar the Crusaders - who we many have beaten had we not lost both of our 1st choice locks early on)! I'm still waiting for Bray's apology over Bryce Lawrence's multiple stuff ups in last year's RWC...

@ Trinats the 2nd. Didn't hear any whinging from the panel, no ref or touch was going keep up with Habana.

Bottom-line the Stormers handled appalling conditions the best. Both teams had some poor calls against them. Unfortunately every game so far has had some really bad calls but that's the nature of the beast.

I would have loved to see the Force win but honestly the Stormers are a class outfit and generally the best teams get the most benefit. As in everyday life, benefit is most often afforded to those who have earned it.

The ref made a mistake with Habana's try and it could have been any ref. They hardly got luck from the useless saffa ref as the Force was swimming around on the stormers side of the ruck in the first half. I thought he actually was too lenient on them in the first half and maybe he got word from one of his touch judges to open his eyes, because he actually policed the breakdown properly in the second half

Mightve slipped out of Habanas hand but there is no way the ref wouldve known, Plus it was an intercept so there was no way in hell the ref cudve caught up with Habana to check or to even have a reason to go upstairs.

However i do think there was a knockon in the lead up to the 2nd try, so the Force deserved at least a bonus point out of this one. IMHO of course.

Another stuff up by Bray ? Will we have another apology ????

Appointing another useless saffa with a whistle. Haveabanana no try, and the Stormers second from another knock on. Stormers getting all the advantage and Force none. Very worrying for Stormers fans, as reality will hit home when you play a decent team with no injuries or a saffa ref to help you out.
