Reds: Hang to beat Hurricanes

The Reds held off a late Hurricanes onslaught to prevail 18-12 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Friday.

The Queenslanders outscored their trans-Tasman rivals two tries to nill, but it was the hosts' courageous work in defence at the death that saw them hang on for their second win of the tournament.

The big moment in the match came four minutes from time when the Hurricanes thought they had scored the winning try through skipper Conrad Smith after Quade Cooper's pass went astray over his try-line.

But the TMO found a knock-on from replacement scrum-half Chris Smylie in the lead-up and the try was disallowed to the Hurricanes' astonishment.

Wallabies duo Digby Ioane and lock Rob Simmons scored the Reds' tries, with Cooper landing a conversion and two penalties, while fly-half Beauden Barrett kicked all of the Hurricanes' points with four penalties.

Ioane dived over in the corner in the 23rd minute and Simmons scored his first Super Rugby try nine minutes after the resumption.

"Man, in some ways that is one of the strangest games I've played," All Black centre Smith said after the match.

"I don't really know what to make of it at the moment, but there were some things going on that I didn't understand. The boys tried hard and it's just frustrating."

Reds skipper James Slipper said his team had been "lucky" to win and praised his side's defence.

"We were playing in our own half and against a quality side like the Hurricanes you can't do that," he said.

"It's a credit to the squad as to how hard we worked for each other and the defence we put up was phenomenal.

"Through good defence we were lucky to come away with a good win."

@Wallaroo you mean a flash in the plan like the Crusaders/Tah's match a few years ago 96 -19 I think it was. "It will never happen again to any Aussie team". The problem for all the Oz team fan's is that there is always a bigger and better score and it is always against them.

Good win for the Reds, another Aussie team that has a lot more depth and potential. Hope this year it's reverse fortunes for the Reds and that they step up rather go through the slump they did last year.

BTW it's no surprise that teams don't run too much in the Brisvegas heat, with the level of humidity they have most of the blokes would be in hospital suffering from dehydration.

@Ferdie that win by the Bulls was a flash in the pan, it'll never happen again to any Aussie team. BTW did you watch the Bulls game against the Force - yeah real world beaters those Bulls lol.

The power of the video ref is so disturbing now...they seem to favour home teams most of the time, Blues and now the Reds WTF...

Seen a few replays of the Smylie "knock-on" now & still can't decide if it went sideways or not... any other year & it's a try, maybe the reg needs a bit of a tinker as regards what happens in the lead-up there needs to be absolute certainty that there was a knock- on, forward pass or whatever.

Also can't help but think "where was this reg back in '07?" ;-)

At least the officials at Brisbane used the TV technology to review a decision. Keen minds will recall the Highlanders-Reds debacle back in '03 (or maybe '04, my mind's keen but google is sharper) where the Highlanders "scored" to win the game in the last minute but they try wasn't awarded, even though the replay reveals the dodgy local "no try" decision in all its tarnished glory.

With that loss, the Highlanders failed to make the semis and they also lost the gate takings that a semifinal would have brought It was the start of the rot, the All Black players started leaving the team and the next season the slump began that they are only now coming out of.

I'm all for using the technology, and am pleased that the Queenslanders finally have climbed on board with it.

No I don't remember, but you as a kiwi would, considering it was probably the last time a try was scored at suncorp against an Aus team ( and that was a saffa side !!!) maybe you need to fork out some more $ to the refs !

That is a very good question kitch I await the decision witrh interest. If not cited he should be reprimanded once again and no amount of apologies to Smith changes his over the top reaction. Imagine if that had been the other way round and Smith had pushed Walsh with the same amount of venom. Perhaps Steve had a few before the game. Might explain his howlers against both teams. There you are armchair general just to keep you happy. Im sure you will appreciate the comment lol. Agree ewth your comments Rambo59 and Trappa two very ordinary teams. Mtaybe the Hurricanes under Canterbry Hammet will be vying with Crusaders under Canterbury Blackadder for the bottom of the NZ conference this year.

Trinats2 - you and your Band Camp. According to Ewen Mckenzie they (9) were away Sunday/Monday - though 4 of the nine made the Monday afternoon training session, delayed till 4pm, also full team trained Tuesday, Wednesday was a day off, trained Thursday.

As for 'couldn't help myself', another great memory for you would surely involve the numbers 3 and 92, and the Bulls team. Sure you remember that day!

The biggest problem is the qld humidity.Pretty stupid to be playing rugby in summer

in qld.I don't think people fully appreciate how hard it is to hang onto a sweaty rugby ball.It leads to a poor spectacle.Reds tried everything they could to lose that game in the second half.Hurricanes only really have themselves to blame. They couldn't finish it off despite being handed opportunity after opportunity.Hopefully autumn will bring in better games

I wasn't too far off on my prediction !

Must be a worrying sign for kiwis to see their franchises (saders last night as well) come up against a decent defence and not cross the white wash ! oh they did cross, but knock ons and double movements were picked up this time !!!

Good win for the Reds with half the team in Wallaby camp during the week, still heaps of room for improvement to come, including both captains returning. and a great win gainst their boggy team ( last win 2007) should be a walk in the park against kiwi big teams like Chiefs who the Reds put 40+ last year with their "second/third string side" ...........couldn't help myself !!!

Very limited game due to officials and conditions. Humid and wet in Bris again, conditions that aren't seen anywhere else in super-land. But biggest impediment to rugby was Steve Walsh..the guy had blown 7 penalties by 10 minute mark. Both teams tried and wanted to play rugby but got limited support from the ref who wanted to stop the game every 30secs...scrums were a 50/50 decision everytime from Walsh.

The atmosphere was what you would expect from a game as such and even with 31000 Walsh needs to realise he is there to let the game run, not to take 5 minutes to pack a scrum.

In saying that reds probably played the better rugby for the first 50 and canes for the last 30...Gill was outstanding and Quirk pretty good once again. Reds obviously did alot of work on their lineout during the week which was much better.

Canes had opportunities to win and should have probably won but reds tackled well..difficult night for Barrett who didn't have one of his best. Cooper obviously was off but he made his kicks which was the difference in the end.

Difficult to compare to any other game so muppets shouldn't try.

Don't expect Walsh will enjoy his match review; just 'one of those days' maybe but not near his best efforts with the whistle overall.

Was at the game again ; Reds forwards were very good but the backs looked dreadful, clueless in many instances. Cooper is a numpty and needs to be dropped. Reds are paying for the lack of quality (any) close season signings. What's the plan Ewen, what's the plan????

R. Simmons was outstanding along with Q. Cooper. V. Vito was lost in the thick of things and no where to be seen. Whatever has happened to the explosive game that TJ. Perenara always brings. Maybe injury he had the better of this promising player. Reds looking strong especially at the breakdown with the outstanding L Gill, who is at the moment rated way ahead of D. Pocock and little ahead of the destroyer M. Hooper.

An ordinary game, played by two ordinary sides, both of whom are renowned for attacking rugby.

No where near as good as expected.

Reds got out of jail thanks to match officials. Difficult to see on the big screen at the game, and I couldnt see it when i watched the replay, but we'll take the points all the same. Canes left 12 points on the field, not like Barrett to miss sitters.
