Highlanders: Made to work

The Highlanders recorded their first victory over the Blues at Eden Park in a decade after hanging on for a crucial 27-20 Super Rugby win.

The southerners also managed to bag the all-important bonus point that gives their play-off hopes a major boost as they move into provisional sixth place on the overall standings on 44 points.

But the men in green were made to work overtime for only their second win in Auckland, as the hosts launched a fiery last-quarter fightback. Behind 27-6, Blues props Tevita Mailau and Tony Woodcock went over to give the home side a chance to level the match in the dying stages.

However, just like they did against the Bulls a week ago, the Highlanders managed to hang on for the win as the Blues slumped to their 11th defeat of the season.

The Blues hit the front first courtesy of a Gareth Anscombe penalty before opposite number Chris Noakes leveled the scores with a three-pointer of his own.

The visitors took the lead, which they never relenquished, when centre Tamati Ellison dotted down his own kick-ahead that began with hooker Andrew Hore snaring a turnover from the other end of the field.

The Blues conceded a second try in the 35th minute after Hosea Gear finished off a slick backline move, taking an infield pass from winger Kurt Baker who had broken down the right-hand touchline. Noakes duly converted from far out and the Highlanders went into the half-time sheds with a nine-point (6-15) buffer.

The Highlanders started the second half in the same fashion they ended the first, through another Gear try. This time it was Ben Smith who Gear had to thank after a damaging break by the full-back ended with the former All Black wing in the corner.

The Highlanders bagged their bonus-point try on the 60-minute mark when Blues hooker James Parsons' throw from a defensive line-out went straight to Adam Thomson, who found no one between him and the line.

The flank didn't need a second invitation and dived over for the softest of tries and the match looked to be wrapped up at that stage until a yellow card to Highlanders centre Phil Burleigh for a professional foul sparked a late Blues comeback.

Mailau first powered over when the Blues were a man up, and then Woodcock crossed the whitewash three minutes from time. But it was too little too late for the home side.

@isthatrightref so true, they have really dragged rugby commentary in Oz down to new depths over the last few years, I only now watch Fox on mute if the muppets are speaking and I don't even bother to tune i to Fox's Thursday show here anymore. The sad thing is that they now make the Saffa commentators look good -who would have thought of that a few years back?

@ Trader2... no problemo... actually once you get past knowing that it's Fox, employers of Clarkey, Kearnsey, Marto etc, their website's not too shabby replay-wise - you just need to remember where the feed came from hence whether to hit "mute" or not.

Thanks for that @isthatrightref, I didn't have the recording so couldn't check, but reallt Trinats answers his own question " highlanders player came in from the side and touched down" he was not saying the ball was picked up, just touched down so you would assume the ball was over the line. Ayway strange that Trinats keeps getting the rules wrong because according to him he has just about played rugby in every country in the world.

@ Trader2... not to mention that once the ball crosses or touches the goal line the ruck, maul, whatever is over & any player can dive on it from wherever they like, there being no offside line in-goal... my FoxSports clip is a bit weak sound-wise so not sure if it's the ref in the background explaining this to the Blues, or one of the NZ commentary team (as opposed to the oz cheerleaders Fox employs) explaining it to the punters. Either way, clearly too much for the master baiter to comprehend.

Trinats guess what, it was a try because that what the scoreboard said. FACT

Highlanders first try ?? was it a try ?

Ruck formed, ball still in the ruck and Highlanders player came in from the side and touched down ? Good old Kiwi refs.

Or was the ref too far back to call ruck formed ? should have gone up stairs then. I'd be dirty if I was a Blues fan.

@ Trader2... not quite sure what went wrong, for a while there your blokes were tracking along nicely & looked to have 6th sown up with a shot at 5th... as things stand now they'll need to win everything from here in AND sweat on other results, esp Sharks v Bulls.

One small point in their favour is they're likely to have only 2 or 3 involved in the June Tests for a smaller injury-risk profile than the Chiefs & Reds who they'll need to beat when S15 resumes... and we all know that if they do go down, they'll go down fighting.

Trinats, dribbling again, it was a big game for the Highlanders as they keep well in touch with the Crusaders but don't worry I am under no illusions they will have a tough run home because they have to play the Chiefs and your lot (although without Horwill you blokes will go to water again and give you the usual excuses)as well as the Crusaders and NZ v NZ clashes are proper matches not the cakewalks you guys have against the three other Oz franchises. Ditto Ramage but would rather go out playing real teams in comparison with what the Oz conference come up with.

New-j4a, just had a weekend attempting to slaughter Daffy Duck and her siblings.

As always a week into duck hunting season, they are far and few between, Perhaps the flying pigs are eating them???

@Trader2 have you looked at all the games the Highlanders have yet to play Crusaders, Chiefs and Reds if, and I say if, they get four from the Cusaders they have to also win against the Chief and Reds. A tall order not impossible but it will be a real test of their ability.

Highlanders will get haskell back for crusaders game before he joins England in SA. LOVE the callup of Tim Boys to the squad; his exclusion was a disgrace!

Trader2:

Getting carried away there mate, "big game" (you suggesting this was?) it was the bottom of the log (or thereabouts) Blues, you should have won comfortably. Enjoy your last few days in the top six, I know it's been years.

The Highlanders have played really well this season.... they are well coached, motivated and have brought in a blend of new players to the franchise. However, I would also have said that they are probably the least favoured of the leading four NZ sides to make the top six play off group.

Will the Highlanders manage to beat the Crusaders when it really matters next week? I am not sure that this will happen, but you never know... it will certainly be a very compelling game of rugby!

Well a good game and the Blues finally seem to be improving. This was closer than i thought it would be ,but i feel the Highlanders had the edge all game, and imo they still look dark horses to challange for the title

Well played the Landers, big game (again) next week against the Crusaders, if you count the bye the Highlanders have 48 points, 2 more than the Crusaders beat them next week and they are in the box seat and I fancy the Highlanders if they make the finals because they know how to close out tight low scoring games.
