Blues v Crusaders Super Rugby Round 3 2013

On a roll: The Blues celebrate

The Blues continued their strong start to the Super Rugby season after seeing off the Crusaders 34-15 at Auckland's Eden Park on Friday.

Last season, the Blues suffered back-to-back defeats in their opening two rounds. This time though, the rejuvenated kiwi outfit have recorded two comprehensive bonus-point wins over tough opposition that keeps them top of the New Zealand conference.

It's not often that the Crusaders are kept tryless in a match, but the Blues did just that whilst showing their old foes how it's done by crossing the whitewash five times.

The Blues got off to a strong start, but it was the Crusaders who were on the scoreboard first courtesy of a Dan Carter penalty.

Five minutes later the Blues were over for the opening try of the match when impressive flank Steven Luatua powered over from close range, though Piri Weepu - who missed four shots at goal - was unable to add the extras.

This allowed the Crusaders to reclaim the lead through another Carter penalty, before the early see-saw battle continued when Weepu found his target with a three-pointer of his own that put the Blues back in front.

It didn't take long for the hosts to open the gap a wee bit further when a superb break-out from Rene Ranger led to winger Frank Halai crossing out wide.

Weepu was once again unable to raise the flags with the ensuing conversion attempt, but it didn't seem to matter when Halai was over in the same corner for his second brace in two weeks after collecting a clever chip from pivot Chris Noakes.

This time Weepu's conversion was successful, which helped the Blues to a commanding 20-6 lead.

With five minutes to go the Crusaders looked dangerously close to scoring a try, but had to settle for another two more penalties from Carter that was enough to keep them in touch with the Blues at half-time (20-12).

The Crusaders started the second half as they ended the first as Carter banged over his fifth penalty of the match in the 45th minute, and all of a sudden the visitors were a converted try away from taking the lead.

However, it would be the last points the seven-time champions would score after the Blues put the game out of sight in the last quarter of the match when flank Luke Braid and wing George Moala touched down for the home side.

First, a bloodied Braid came up with the ball after sustained pressure on the Crusaders line led to prop Charlie Faumuina falling inches short. Last year's skipper simply had to fall on the loose ball and Weepu converted.

Crusaders wing Israel Dagg then came agonisingly close to crossing the whitewash, but the TMO ruled that he had been guilty of a double movement - which certainly appeared to be the wrong call from the man upstairs.

Luckily for the Blues, the TMO didn't need to be called into play when Moala raced 60m after collecting a chip ahead from replacement pivot Baden Kerr, who also rubbed further salt into the Crusaders' wounds by adding the conversion from far out.

Game, set and match.

ferdie I think the TMO's ruling was "held in the tackle and didn't release" as you said the problem was Dagg was never held so no tackle was made, no release needed. Went back to check the replay and the missus had deleted it, Queenslanders you just cannot trust them. Anyway would have made no difference to the result, well done the Blues the out Crusaded the Crusaders. Was it just me but there was a certain amount of All Blackish about the Blues play or was it just the shot of "Ted" smirking in the Blues coaching box. I don't think the Crusaders are that far away and when they remember how to catch the ball - look out. Thanks again to those Foxtel dills who switch to the Tah's/Rebels preamble (yawn) and we miss all the after match comments from Auckland, anyway next week I get one of those (probably Illegal) sat dishes installed and I will be able to tap straight into Sky Sports in NZ, oh what joy.

Ferdie

I am not taking sides here but in regards to Dagg releasing the ball would the question be if he was held in the tackle or not.

Its not a coincidence that the last time the Blues won, Graham Henry was involved in the coaching staff!!!

It was not a double movement from Dagg - he was tackled and failed to release the ball, as per TMO's ruling.

Overall. Dagg's night on the wing a nightmare.

Don't know what the TMO was thinking about. Dagg was released and went over for a try. What's wrong with that? Changed the course of the game.

The Blues really were superb, yes, but i have NEVER seen the Crusaders play so badly. Cant believe im saying this and i know were only into week 3 but the Crusaders look like they could be the weakest NZ team! Cant wait for the NZ vs SA matches! Easily the best

Looks to me like it will be either a NZ or SA team to win once again this year as the Aussies look pretty average (apart form the Brumbies)

That makes my day. John Kirwan is the man, Blues will be like the Hurricanes last year, they can top the Kiwi Conference.

I only got to the pub to see the last 15 minutes of the game. In those 15 minutes the Crusaders got over the line 3 times, only to be held up twice, plus one disallowed try to Dagg --- couldn't see what was wrong with it --- maybe a double movement?

Stirring attack from the red-and-blacks, stirring defence from the blues. Good to see the arch-enemy no longer clueless verging on pathetic, but a long season it is and the men from Canterbury often take a while to hit their straps. Count on them being there again at the pointy end, but on this display you'd have to guess the Blues will be there too.

R. Ranger has always been a great individual. He has had the talent but J.Kirwan iis the man who it seems has best harnessed it. Now that R. Ranger has got his head right by showing a lot of maturity, things look good for the Blues. F. Halai, take a bow and K. Read is as good a cheat as R. McCaw. Players like R. McCaw and K. Read try to fool the referee and tis bad when they get away with it.

Fox commentator said it was 2005 when a team last scored four tries v Crusaders. Anyone?

Enjoyed the game, getting a bit tense at 20-15 there was still a chance against play for Crusaders; shows last week's Blues game not a one-off, also highlighted what loss Rene ranger will be if he continues current form. Crusaders maybe 5% off the pace; mean spirited of me, but I'll say i was pleased to see them kept tryless.
