Aussie bragging rights for Brumbies

Henry Speight diving over for the Brumbies

40th-minute try: Henry Speight

The Brumbies recorded a 23-6 victory over the 'Tahs on Saturday in a win that moves them nine points clear at the top of the Australian conference.

It was far from a classic in Canberra as the in-form hosts put in a professional performance to cruise into a well-earned bye week on 35 points.

Their tries came at the perfect time in the game and ultimately proved the difference as Henry Speight's score on half-time and Andrew Smith's five minutes after the interval did the damage.

Micheal Foley's side, who face the Bulls at home next Friday, could only trouble the scorers via the boot of number nine Brendan McKibbin due to a fine Brumbies defence that was rarely breached.

The Brumbies entered the game on the back of good performances in South Africa, most recently claiming a bonus-point win against the Lions. Meanwhile the Waratahs fell to the Crusaders last week and have been struggling for line-breaking threats due to the continued absence of Drew Mitchell, Lachie Turner and also Rob Horne.

They may now have to add Wallaby hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau to their unavailable players after the powerful front-row left the field before the break after taking some heavy knocks.

Action in Canberra was, as mentioned, not high in the entertainment stakes and as the half-time siren sounded there were only two penalties apiece on the board by fly-half Christian Lealiifano and 'Tahs man McKibbin. But on that siren came a moment of brilliance from winger Speight, who ghosted through two tacklers on the right to make it 13-6 at the interval.

Following a half-time talking to from Jake White, the Brumbies continued in the second period from where they left off in the first as patient phase play led to outside centre Smith crashing over. Lealiifano's extras moved the Brumbies up to a 20-6 lead on 45 minutes.

Only Lealiifano's penalty on 72 minutes troubled the scorers until the final whistle though, as the Brumbies' defence shut up shop to keep the Waratahs' limited running threats quiet.

Brumbies are playing really good rugby! Great to see a team Gel so well.

Just a thought(not because I'm south African) but what if white hadn't taken over the coaching. What would the state of the Australian teams have been this season.

If you look at the points table and the Brumbies history, I think that conference points system would've been a much hotter topic...

re Capriati, I remember the English media calling Jonah Joanna Lumley before he tore them a new one..

Anyhow, not good reading for the Aussie teams, expect to see more Reds scouts doing the rounds of Auckland club comps this season.. they were in town last month

meneer: pre-madonna?

That would be someone like Cyndi Lauper then.

Great play on words I'm sure, think you'll find Cipriani - or (Jennifer) Capriati as Peter de Villiers is said to have called him - may better be described as a prima donna.

It is trying times for Australian rugby, in my opinion the Melbourne Rebels have stretched the resources a bit too far & even the Force is a stretch. Having said that there is a still a load of talent between these teams and surely the Wallabies will prove to be 2nd/3rd world rankings for 2012. On another note look how much better the rebels played without the overated english pre-madonna cipriani - can't see why any team would want to include him in their squad.

@ShellingPeas I have said this for sometime, Foley is not the right guy.He tries hard but just does't have the X Factor to coach a S15 team. The Tahs have the personnel and hunger so the problem must lie with the coaching, imagine if someone like Jake White was coaching the Tahs we'd be somewhere near the top of the table on points alone.

As I have said all year Brumbies are the team for the Oz conference. The posers well what can you say so it's Tah's v Reds to see who plays for one more week at the end.

Time for Michael Foley to realise that he is not head coach material. Good (not great) forwards coach but that is the extent of it. He's just not able to deliver a cohesive 15 man game plan and it showed again last night as soon as the ball was moved from the forwards. Time for him to step aside before he completely ruins the careers of Berrick Barnes and Adam Ashley-Cooper and, more importantly, drives more Tahs fans away from the SFS. Problem being though, who is there to replace him? Pieter DeVilliers?

True melkdave I would hate to be a Waratahs supporter. Their play toally disintegrated in the second half and their lack of penetration and nous of what to do with the ball is only beaten by the Bloos. Must be the colour of the jersey. Looks like once again they have come out as the flower girls of the Australian Conference. Do the OZ rugby teams sing a team song after the game like their AFL compatriots? Can just hear those words ringing out, "Why are we always the Flower Girls and never the Blushing Brides."

I have to admit i didnt think it was an exciting game .but it seems the Brumbies are the form team in the Australian conferance by some margin. The Tahs imo look devoid of insperation or penatration .B.Barnes just stands to deep exactly where he should as a 12 but not a 10 .this allows defences to to tackle before they reach the gain line .Have to say atm ive not been impressed with any of the Australain FHs this season all look very predantic and laboured .and to be honest not international class by some margin
