@Bones7 and others - to me, O'Brien just seems like a slightly more mobile Andrew Sheridan, i.e. a gym monkey. Perhaps if he bulked up a bit more he could be a solution at prop for Ireland?

@tompaton I agree entirely with you about Lydiate, he's got to be the man for the Lions. I'm glad O'Briens been found out as well, he had a bit of a surprise factor last year but I'm pleased I'm not the only one who thinks he is well below par in his defence. O'Mahony was far superior when he played at 7 I thought and Chris Henry has looked more effective in domestic competitions. He doesn't make steals, run particularly good support lines or cause much trouble for the opposition. He wants to be careful he doesn't get tagged with the 'utility back row' name otherwise he'll start losing out very quickly to specialists.

@ tompaton et al - if you read the article from Richard Hill, you'll see that the 3 traditional roles aren't as important as having 3 back-row players who compliment each others' skills and fulfill all the roles between them.

Roles in every position have evolved, so it's not unusual for FR forward to be competing and fetching at the breakdown, nor for a 2nd row to pop up in the back line. This evolution of the positions and multi-disciplinary players is great. It's a step forward, rather than being stuck in the past. We no longer have wooden studs and heavy cotton jerseys, why can't the "traditional roles" evolve too?

You ask why the obsession with Robshaw. I ask why the obsession with a "traditional" 6, 7 and 8?

tompaton says...

ahh really PR? Chris Robshaw at 7? Do you guys know what a 7 is supposed to do? He wasn't even in the top four 7s in the competition! Ross Rennie, Dusautoir, Robert Barbieri and dare I say it Sam Warburton, despite injuries were all better than him. He's not a seven - didn't make a steal the whole competition and relied on Dan Cole to do their dog work. Don't understand why you guys are so obsessed with the guy! You make yourselves look like a joke, because you'll NEVER see anyone else shoving Robshaw anywhere.

KubilaKhan - yeah try leaving Lydiate out of that team mate, cause he's going to be voted player of the tournament. He will be the Lions 6 hands down. Him, Ferris and Croft are all excellent players but it is Lydiate who will get the best out of Sam Warburton. And really Sean O'Brien on the bench? I know this guy can carry, but his defence is pretty dire for test flanker. I've never seen him drive anyone back and he's constantly getting driven back himself (in defence) and missing tackles. That's why it is even more stupid to employ at 7 let alone 6. He should be playing eight to utilise his carrying abilities.

Anyone else remember Richard Hill's article about the role of the flankers:

@KubilaKhan - if you think that George North is the Welsh Jonah Lomu, then you need to look at some video tapes of Jonah Lomu in action. North has a long way to go to get to the same levels of athleticism and power, and personally I dont think he will get there. As Will Carling said, Lomu was a freak (in the positive sense).

Greenstone1408,

I reckon you'd be saying the same of Kearney were he wearing red, so consistently strong was the Louth man's performance this tournament. crunchfit's example is *all* determination and will, nor a rarity throughout this campaign.

It's fine nominating Halfpenny for this, er, 'honour', so strong was his performance, but don't let the romance of a championship victory muddy the stellar efforts of the Irishman. He is every bit the hero depending on one's loyalties.

Ive fallen off my chair at the thought of Chris Robshaw being in team of the tournament. Rest of the team is spot on though in my opinion.

Robshaw is an openside who doesnt win turnovers or link play - a plodder who makes tackles. Admittedly a lot of tackles ! Zanni for me. Goes unnoticed as always in Parrisse's shadow but a quite remarkable player.

@ KubilaKhan

Not a bad selection indeed, even though I would always consider departments rather than individuals. Sum of individual players seldom results in a great squad.

@ Ringo - the Aussies haven't played a lot of these players at top International level. Perhaps at age grade, but not in a Test. I know this because some of the players got their first caps during the 6N.

10 Owen Farrell (England) 'just pips Priestland'? You're joking right?

Priestland had a shocker of a tournament. Far too static on the line. The back three had to link up through the outside center most of the time or from the pack.

To be honest, Kearney defined a new level for full-backs. Normally, when you chase a high ball, your success rate is 1 out of 3 at best. Kearney had a percentage of at least 2 out of three. A perfect mixture of courage and capability. Outstanding, my man of the tournament.

"13. brian o driscoll - the man defines the meaning world class. if he's fit he plays simple. along with roberts they can be devastating like 09"

What did they devaste in SA? I can't remember of anything terrifying.....

The Lions lost to SA, even with PdV.

Just had a sudden realisation that Pascal Pape was absolutely awesome for the whole of the tournament and hasn't been mentioned at all!

Still way to early imo for any players to be considered for the Lions..Alot can happen between now and summer 2013 .After the aurtum internationals is when we should be debating any Lions squag lol.Though i must say all the potential squads ive seen look pretty good .

Robshaw is an unreal selection. Won't even make the Lions squad! Farrell had a good game against Wales, but Priestland and Sexton were easily better throughout the competition!

I like Gray as a player, but this article suggests that the writers forgot that he didn't turn up against Italy! Great players play every game!

Parisse - hard to pick a player who struggles amongst poor players. For me he tries to do too much, and doens't deserve his place.

Here's a strong team I think could beat the PR selection using non selected players:

15 Medard. 14 Bowe. 13 Tuilagi. 12 Roberts. 11 Halfpenny. 10 Sexton. 9 Reddan. 8 Harinordoquy. 7 Warburton. 6 Ferris. 5 Geldenhuys. 4 Wyn-Jones. 3 Castogiovanni. 2. Servat. 1 Poux.

Ringo says...

Agree with ABlack, the Aussies know all these players and have beaten them. Though, thinking about it, it has been getting more even lately.

Chris Robshaw ! at open side flanker! Seriously? No wonder down under teams get all that amount of ball at conquest phases. More than ever, todays modern rugby teams that aim to be at the top need to have on its team a player that ensures a high % of success from goal kicking and a true scavenger that get ball possession at the break. Its not rocket science, just look at Aust, NZ, SA, and also wales.... But yes, Chris Robshaw is a good option at 7, at least from my perspective of New Zealander supporter....
