I know this isn't our best team, or even the best options for players in their positions but
1.Healy, 2.Best 3. J Hagan 4. Ruddock/Ferris 5. Tuohy/Ryan 6. Ferris/Ruddock 7. Henry 8. Heaslip 9. Reddan. 10. McFadden/Sexton 11. Zebo 12. McFadden/D'Arcy 13. O'Malley/Bowe. 14. Trimble/ Gilroy 15. Kearney
16. Cronin 17. Wilkinson 18. Tuohy/ Ryan 19. O'Brien 20. Marshall 21. Fitzgerald 22. Jones
I just think McFadden displays a lot of good defensive and kicking skills. Give him a run at 10, if he can control a game he should be the third choice 10 going to world cups, completely getting rid of Paddy Wallace.

Yeah, great. Take Ireland's best player and one of the leading loose forwards in the world game and play him out of position.
In a similar vein, who for the twelve jersey - Sexton or Kearney!?

Kidney now needs to show this team that it is not all about some Munsteresque deep rooted thinking and make an Ulster player captain for the remainder of the series...anything else will smack of sporting nepotism and a Manager who truly is NOT smart....we'll see!

fully agree with fellow leinster fans that boss shouldn't be called up - his priority right now should be our rabo and heineken campaigns. this 6N has become a dead rubber, just as i predicted it would (apart from the obligation to beat those perfidious englishmen on st patrick's day yehhh!!! chucky our la) so in an ideal world all of the first-team leinster players would report back to base immediately, to prepare for the big games coming up (ospreys, munster, blues).
but of course the irfu and kidders being who they are, this is not an ideal world

Donnacha O Callahan captained the Lions before, but he's still crap.
Heaslip would have been a shoe in IMO had he kept up his back row dominance but he's not such a prominant figure now that SOB and Fez are doing all the ball carrying. I don't think he's playing badly though unlike most. I reckon it will be Best undoubtedly, Kidney doesn't like to take risks.

Just read the update that O'Leary has been called up to replace Murray!!! Kidney sure loves them Cork donkeys.
As a Leinster, I am glad he hasn't called the form scrum half in Ireland - Boss - up, as Leinster need him.
However, with the championship over, and us having moved up to 7th in the IRB rankings, surely now is the time to bring young players through if ever? Give Marshall or Murphy a shot.

First of all, what does a captain do? Very little really, aside from an inspiring team talk or occasional huddle under the posts. Sexton, O'Gara and Best can all do that. O'Connell is a loss in the lineout, but in truth what does he do in the loose? He goes to ground generally before he's tackled, makes a yard or two once every 3 or 4 carries, never uses his bulk to full advantage, hitting the ball at pace and lets DOC do all teh dirty work at ruck time. McCarthy is just as good in the lineout and makes a higher all-round contribution, hopefully Kidney will take off the Munster goggles and give him a go.

O' Connell's leadership will be felt more against England away than Scotland at home. I just hope Kidney doesn't make ROG captain and demotes Sexton, our best out half and future, to 12...Some seem to overlook that Sexton had a very accomplished "behind the scenes" game against France (without the usually great and talismanic BOD don't forget) as against ROG's not so accomplished performances in Paris over the years when we had a firing D'arcy and BOD in the equation...so the Paris result if taken in that context was a very good one, and against a very strong French team too...Sexton is the future of this team, and by starting him in Paris, Kidney is showing he's slowly coming around to that conclusion, which is very positive for Ireland as a team. To change that now is going to put this team in a backward trajectory as it doesn't solve anything as regards the centre position...With D'arcy clearly out of form, If Sexton had Downey and Earls outside him I think we'd see Sexton and Earls posing even more of a threat in attack where Downey (adding well needed bulk to our backline) could gain hard yards and offload to the Sexton loop with the poacher Earls hovering, could be a brilliant trio, not only this, Downey's defence in tandem with Sexton's would make a Fort Knox of that channel where tries have been shipped in the past with ROG at 10...If Kidney think's about it, it would be really no bigger risk to try Sexton, Downey and Earls against Scotland than it would be to play ROG, Sexton and Earls, as both these trios have never started a match for Ireland...Fortune favours the brave, DK!

A huge loss for Ireland as O'Connel gives leadership and his sheer will to never give up will leave a massive hole to be filled.Espically as his been playing so well in the 6Ns this year. Also i shame for C.Murray he might not be brillant going forward atm but his defence is very solid and will be missed against Scotland imo.As to captain well its either Best or ROG i guess.Wonder if DK will now experiment for the rest of the 6Ns ?? But given his recent selection policy i dought it

As a Leinster fan I'm glad he hasn't called up Boss as a replacement. We need him. But TOL? Feck off. Give Marshal the shot, we can't win the championship anyhow now.

Leave ROG on the Bench, drop Earls, DOC and Ryan and then I would be happy. Time to concentrate on the HEC. No more Munster injuries please. At least Wally started full training again last week.

Two options for captaincy, Rory Best and Jamie Heaslip.
O'Callaghan is useless without O'Connell, so I think Tuohy and Ryan should start.
1.Healy 2.Best 3.Ross 4.Tuohy 5.Ryan 6.Ferris 7.O'Mahony 8.Heaslip(C) 9.Reddan 10.O'Gara 11.Trimble 12.Sexton 13.Bowe 14.Earls 15.Kearney.
16.Cronin 17.Court 18.O'Callaghan 19.O'Brien 20.O'Leary 21.McFadden 22.Fitzgerald

fozza- close Donnacha O'Callaghan is how I'd spell it.
bcrugby913 exactly, O'Leary has no future, bring Marshall or Boss through.
quin_dub- would love to see Ferris in second row. But this is Kidney, he'll never do anything like that. Second rows jumping at different positions doesn't make too much of a difference was my understanding. It's the need for a beefy guy behind the tighthead for the scrum. Although, Im not a secondrow so I could be talking out of my arse.
O'Connell is a massive loss. He would be the hardest man to replace if we were at full strength. Would have thought the captaincy would go to Best or Heaslip. Heaslip seems to have been groomed as a future Irish captain, although if you want a leader who leads by example, Rob Kearney is doing lots of that at the moment. Just a dark horse though, not who I'd choose.

Bad news for both but Murray slowed down service to Sexton which prevented any attempts at attacking play from the centre. O'Connel is another matter, he will be sorely missed. O'Callaghan is lucky to still be in place and the idea of him giving a disciplined performance as Captain is laughable, no doubt he will play but I feel this season could be his last as a first choice squad member. Can't say i'd realised how big the Munster Leinster divide is, seems every time Ireland are discussed 50% of the comments are divisive. You don't get that from rival squads in Scotland England on a national level, you're for it and thats that, no matter how well your team play. That is except for one chippy Scot after the French/Scotland game who was slightly disappointed that his team had lost but said thankfully the main result was the day before after Wales scraped home against England.

@quin_dub ur spot on.
play ferris at 5 and bring in o' mahony at 7 wit obrien taking 6(position in where he plays his best) also i think coming back up to national squad will help oleary and i wouldnt be surprised if he challenges reddan for the starting position vs england.
For captain i think id go with jamie heaslip, a bit of responsibity would sit well on his shoulders and may force him to improve.
For the match against scotland id like to see darcy dropped nd replaced with james downey, but thats not going to happen. also like to see bowe going into 13 if things are going well.

fozza,
Donncha O'Callaghan captained at least one midweek B&I Lions team in 2009, but no Irish side. Rory Best lead a successful tour to North America that same year, amounting to his two caps with the armband. O'Gara, who has yet to start a game this Six Nation's campaign, captained Ireland just once - in a 33-10 loss at Twickenham back in '08!
