Although I really don't care about this league at all,.. it's boring to the point of self-harm,... I agree with carebearstare,... why drag the season out any longer than it needs to be,.. top team goes up,.. bottom team goes down,.. it ain't rocket science,.. I feel for london Welsh,.. and I wonder why those in charge of funding aren't making sure that there is a pot to ensure that teams going up can actually get a reward for their hard work,..

Let me stress first of all that I do not agree with this in the slightest, relegation/promotion should be relegation/promotion. It should be black and white.
Having said that, the rules are the same as they were last year so the clubs knew what was coming. And for all the people saying the risk of relegation is false, that's not the case. Bristol were only knocked out of the play offs after the premiership had been determined. Therefore the THREAT of relegation was very real especially as Bristol were clear favourites after the league ended.
However, I would dearly love to see London Welsh in the premiership and this seems to me to be a lost opportunity given the number of welsh players heading away from the rabo... Would it be better for the Welsh to have a bastion of players going up against the premiership opponents week in week out?

@ DaveJ - nice to have your sensible and helpful comments. A little flesh to the bones would make your argument understandable, even if you're wrong. Just spouting a daft statement make you look inept and foolish and endears you to no-one.
@ NHsaints and other supporters of this policy - why not, as has been suggested elsewhere, give them a season to upgrade their facilities? They can use the increased revenue from playing in the AP to fund the facilities and plans. If they happen to be relegated and another team promoted, they will then get the opportunity to upgrade. And slowly but surely, we'll have better facilities across the Championship, as well as those in the AP.
@ scot_rsa - don't let a Tigers supporter hear you suggest that play-offs are daft..!
@ JRHartley - compared to the England 7s kit, the lime green is positively subdued!

so much for the English and french clubs insisting on change to the qualification of Celtic teams through the "non-relegation" of the rabo. Now the premiership seems to have cast away relegation too..........it non sensical. let them come up or else stop it altogether.

Great shout there Carriag. Miss Leeds going down last season did you? Make sure you know what you're talking about before posting cocky comments next time. On the subject i feel that this is totally the wrong decision. The League 1 was changed to the Championship to improve the standard and there by create a second strong league in England. Whats the point if they're then gonna do things like this. What are the odds of most Championship clubs being able to afford to build stadiums to the standard required by the Premiership without getting to the Premiership first? What about the football Premiership aswell. Blackpool were in there with a stadium that only held about 8,000 until they revamped it, and in a league where the average ground is about 40,000. You could also use Leeds as an example as they do have a biggish stadium but only got crowds of about 4,000. So what would Premiere Rugby and the RFU rather have - 4,000 in a 19,000 capacity stadium, or 6,000 fans in a 6,000 capacity stadium?

Feel for London Welsh, why isn't there a pot of money drawn from the Premiership that will allow teams like them and the Pirates to get the facilities they need. If they win then they get the money and improve their grounds and qualify. Have to agree with carebearstare though, playoffs are just a cynical money-making exercise that benefit nobody. Look at the Super 15 nonsense, it's rife. Bristol were the best over the whole season and that's what counts, teams that peak for a short period during play-offs should not leapfrog them.

@Carriag errr yes they have...Leeds. I'm going to have to support the RFU on this one...not meeting the required standards for promotion is a good enough reason not to be promoted and Falcons look like they'll be able to compete next year so hopefully it's the right call.

@APV1 - I think boycotting the final would be a fantastic response, why risk injuring players when they're not actually playing for anything. Only when it's confirmed that promotion is on the line should they take the field.

surely the main problem is with the championship system, no? the only team that could have been promoted (Bristol) finished top of the standings by 7 points but lost over 2 legs in the semi final. i know recent championship play off winners have done well in the top division but i think the best team throughout the league should get at least a better chance at winning the playoff. take the pro12 for eg. the top 2 teams get home semi finals and top team gets home final. newcastle fought bravely against relegation in the end and with the signings the club has made i think they'll be a better addition to the playoff finalists
