Saints stunned by four-try Leicester

Toby Flood scoring for Leicester in grey

Top effort: Toby Flood

Leicester did their Aviva Premiership play-off hopes a power of good after they defeated Northampton 35-21 at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday.

Toby Flood scored 25 points and although Ryan Lamb rewarded Saints' early dominance with two penalties, the visiting Tigers took control through converted tries by Flood and Alesana Tuilagi.

Lamb added another from the tee, but scores from the visiting fly-half and Horacio Agulla confirmed their victory, despite late tries by Lee Dickson and Chris Ashton for the home side.

In what was effectively a must-win encounter for the Saints, considering Exeter Chiefs' impressive recent form, they dominated the opening stages.

The hosts' fly-half rewarded their supremacy with an early penalty before adding another after 12 minutes, as they took a 6-0 lead.

However, Leicester have displayed their attacking instincts throughout the season, shown by their place at the top of the try-scoring charts.

Immediately after the restart, Lamb's clearance kick was charged down and Flood had a simple run to the line. The same player converted before the visitors went on the attack again. From first-phase ball, play was moved wide to Agulla who showed superb skills to set up Tuilagi for their second try, Flood converting.

The two tens then traded penalties as the Tigers took a deserved 17-9 half-time lead.

Despite Northampton needing to find something extra, the visitors were simply clinical.

Flood went over for his second converted score and Agulla touched down out wide for the bonus-point.

Dickson then went over, Stephen Myler converting, as the Saints added some respectability to the scoreline.

Flood kicked another penalty, but Martin Castrogiovanni was then sin-binned for the visitors and Ashton crossed the whitewash in his absence.

The problem is with the Saints at this stage of the season is simply that a whole campaign of relying on a fairly small nucleus of key players takes its toll and when the big games come around in april and may they're running almost on empty. Saints will have the same problem until the planned stadium expansion is completed and the extra revenues can be put into building a sqaud with more depth.

Didn't see the game. Don't have ESPN and live in Surrey. Delighted with result. However it was as good a team/bench - that Tigers could put on the paddock. Saints clearly missing key players.

Can't help thinking that Saints mindset is to out Leicester, Leicester, rather than create their own identity. Tigers like it or not are a dynasty. Still two great clubs and with a full side might well have been different. Cockerill & O'Connor underrated.

Lamb was bloody shocking as usual. Don't know why we ever signed him...even Smyler is better (although saying that smyler was brilliant in last season's HC for saints), the main problem is the big players don't stand up when they need to or they're out...Just look at our 'first XV' Manoa was quiet, Hartley suspended, Clark suspended, Wood injured, Lawes injured, Haywood injured, Tiny was repeatedly penalised for nothing today and we need a top class winger to replace Ashton...

I am totally against saints all too often but here I have to say the ref was totally anti Saints and was shocking in the decisions in the scrum and others what a joke he gave Leicester everything

melkdave - I wish I knew what the problem with the Saints was. We just can't put it together for a whole season. We are turning into chokers. And I hate myself for saying that but I know we are better than this result suggests.

Disappointed but not hugely surprised we lost this game. Didnt realise it would be such an embarssing stuffing.

Quite simply, Saints are not good enough at the moment and this game is proof of that.

Well done Leicester.

Just what is the Saints problem when it comes to the bussiness end of the season .Again they seem to be struggling but this time theres no HC to explain the players just not seeming to preform .That being said they did comeback in the 2nd half but honestly the game was Liecesters by the end of the 1st half ..They seem to be peaking at the right time and i wonder just where they would be if the RWC hadnt stripped them of so many players at the start of the season .The playoffs look like they will be harder than ever this year butyou just cant write Liecester off .Wouldnt be surprised if the end up champions again ,given present form
