Thomson cops one-week ban

14th November 2012 17:33

Adam Thomson 2012

Suspended: Adam Thomson

All Blacks flanker Adam Thomson has received a one-week suspension for his reckless ruck on the head of the Scottish flanker Alasdair Strockosh.

The hearing took place in London on Wednesday.

He will miss this week's clash with Italy in Rome.

Thomson, who has yet to re-sign with the NZRU, could play his last game for the All Blacks against either Wales in Cardiff or England at Twickenham on November 24 or December 1 respectively.

Thank you Euskadi for helping to strip some of the emotion away from this.

It is clear from the IRB guidelines (2-9 weeks) and the fact that this was at the lower end of the scale.... Factor in the discipline record of Thomson and a one week suspension is both logical and understandable. The victim impact statement would also have supported this course of action. It was quite right that Thomson should have been yellow carded (his boot did make contact with an opponent's head) and then it was correct for him to be sighted. The suspension is understandable and logical.

Those bleating about special treatment for the ABs need a better understanding of the rules and sanctions in relation to displinary matters.

Fair verdict, good previous record and thoughtless rather than malicious intent.

At least he had the decency to show remorse unlike some recent unpunished eye gouging, elbow strike incidents.

Justice done, move on...

Have been listening to a debate on NZ Talk Sport Radio. The majority of people think that one week is enough. However, when it was pointed out how would they feel if it was an action against McCaw or any other Kiwi they were quiet.

The judiciary system is inconsistent and seriously needs looking at, but for those muppets out there that think there is a different rule book for the ABs then you guys really need to grow up. If NZ were being looked after then all the illegal and premeditated hits on McCaw would been ruled with an iron fist. The fact that Greyling and Higginbottom only got two weeks for their actions merely highlights that those who think NZRFU are untouchable are in need of medical help for the envious ways.

For the record I felt that Thomson should have got between 2-6 weeks.

Guys I think most people agree it is the IRB who need to overhaul the rules and that seems to be their intention, so we can all move on. Job done, well done.

A friend pointed out that 2-9 is just a guideline, you can be correctly found guilty of stamping, but you can get no suspension at all. What is funny after a raft or worse incidents against McCaw in particular were people have slid away from any punishment at all, a perception an AB got treated leniently has prompted the IRB to finally review the system !!

And another thing making reference Mealamu and Umaga, it was 7 years ago and the rules were different. They clean out at a ruck, as happened many times in the English premiership on that same weekend I remember, and the rules were difference. It was in response to this apparent leniency to the pair (it was a South African citing commisioner, I thought they were reckless and should got a couple of weeks) that the IRB changed the rules the next year, defining a tip tackle, and making specifically illegal to pick a player up past the horizontal and let go. You seem to forget the laws of the game were actually different at that point in time

bok avenger..

whats your take on the greyling incident and consequent wet bus ticket?

im afraid the irb have set themselves a precedent there..not to mention higgenbottom and cooper and hartley of which the latter 2 got off with no penalty..and the irb favours the ABs.. yeah right!

@BokAvenger

Well at least the AB's are marketable, as against, er your lot.

Euskadi says...

IRB guideline is 2-9 weeks

(10.4) Stamping/Trampling on an Opponent.

Lower End 2 weeks, Top End 9 weeks.

All would have to agree regardless of your affiliation that Thompson offended at the lower end of the scale, punishment 2 weeks. Then consideration would be given to the victim impact statement and then to Thompsons' clean record as well as the fact that it was yellow carded on the field, result 1 week.

Perhaps on review they might reenforce the original sanction, 2 weeks, after all it was contact with the head.

Those bleating on about special treatment for the ABs probably need to learn the rules, sanctions and generally understand how to play and referee the game

@ruckingkiwi I'm inclined to agree - this was reckless rather than malicious and, with no harm done the ban probably reflects the red card that should have been shown on the day.

Personally a 1 match ban seems pointless as a meaningful sanction generally rather than in this case. Minimum 2 for any finding of guilt in a citing case.

Come on he hardly touched him at all, the player himself said it was not worth more than a yellow. It's too light, he got off too easy etc... Some of you girls should form a mob for that mentality

Why don't the IRB just publish an alternative rule book for the All Blacks. It already exists in the minds of IRB officials so why not just make it public so we're all in on the scam. Next time an AB stomps on someone's head just send him to bed early with no egg nog.

APV1 says...

What a load of nonsense. A boot to the head should have a minimum of 4 weeks, regardless of "intent" or "damage caused" or any other "mitigating circumstance". You can then take a week off for a clean record and we get to a 3 week ban, which feels about right. But 1 week?! What sort of message does this send out?

Compare this with Simmons and there is still just no consistency. These Citing Panels are just useless!

@ AbdelBenazzi - I disagree (obviously). Have a read of rugby_phile's post and I feel he's summed it up well.

YOU DON'T MESS WITH A PERSON'S HEAD, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY'VE GOT A SCRUM CAP ON.

@ ferdie - the posts seem to be mostly raging against the useless citing panel and their inconsistencies and lack of sense. The fact that he's a NZ player has hardly been mentioned. Chip? Shoulder..?

For those who say this is fine because someone else didn't get punished, you're completely missing the point. The issue is that the IRB doesn't seem to have a grip on the disciplinary process or the outcomes. Whilst there are guidelines for appropriate sanctions, the conclusion is often to lenient or too harsh. In addition, the citing process is a nonsense and is badly managed (Gougerie incident, being a very good example - just because RM didn't report it, other people should have been allowed to).

So let's stop the daftness about the countiries and focus our outrage where it should be - at the IRB and the process itself.

@kpe12 - in fairness, as a Bok fan, this is very similar to Burger incident on Lions tour. Both should have got instant red as the touch judge was right there. The error was compounded by weak action afterwards.

@ToAll

Well im happy most posters feel the ban was a joke.and sent the wrong signal. Also let me be clear,i am only calling for 4 weeks min,and not more ,because of Stockoshs support ,without it i would be saying 8 weeks min.The head is just a NO GO AREA,shouldnt matter if it was done hard or softly, and it doesnt matter if the player was kiwi, french ,english or a little green martin to me.Why do i feel this way because today i have a loverly scar just below my left eye,a quater inch higher and i would have lost my eye.The player who gave this didnt do it intenionallyand was very remorsefull ,he just hit the ruck, and stated rucking didnt even realise my head was there until i screamed in painThis of course is going back to the days when rucking was legal ,and the now illegal blade studs where just coming into vogueRugby is a hard contact sport, and players suffer enough injuries, from normal legal gameplayas it is,also EVERY PLAYER knows the head area is a NO GO AREA .Wheather with a fist ,forearm, elbow knee headbutt, and espically the BOOT.

bokavenger and ben7. So how do you explain Greyling getting only 2 weeks. Proof of how one eyed or just plain stupid you two are

@ Melkdave - a wrong signal like not penalising or citing Gougerie, Powell or Hartley for gouging, head high tackle and elbow to Sir Richies head respectively?

Anyhow, 1 week seems in keeping with the above benchmark of 2 weeks for a flying elbow across a ruck or 2 weeks for a headbutt and knee in the head to Sir Richie?
