Cane not resting on his laurels

Sam Cane Chiefs v Cheetahs Round Three 2013

Sam Cane: Working hard at training

Chiefs loose forward Sam Cane is not resting on his laurels despite his side's 45-3 win over the Cheetahs in Hamilton last weekend.

The 21-year-old revealed that the competition for places is tough and being chosen ahead of fellow All Blacks openside flanker Tanerau Latimer - in the starting line-up for the Chiefs' opening two matches - came down to consistency at training.

"It's an extremely competitive team," Cane told Sportal.

"There's not much difference between the starting 15, the guys on the bench and even the guys that miss out.

"Training counts for a lot when you're getting in the start or the 22 - it's a competitive team but it can only be good."

Despite scoring six tries, the Chiefs' defence played a huge role in their victory over the Cheetahs.

The 2012 champions gave a rusty defensive display during the first half.

Cane said the Chiefs were put under pressure at the wrong times in that match.

"When we did have the ball we made silly mistakes then on defence we were giving away silly penalties that were putting us under the pump." he explained.

Good to see he has picked up the rugby cliches. Also he must have received a blast from the coaches after blowing a try against the Highlanders as he passed at every opportunity this week. He has had a great start but needs to to keep out T Latimer.
