Beale blow hits Rebels

04th March 2013 05:44

Rebels fly-half Kurtley Beale has been ruled out of Super Rugby action for up to a month with a fractured hand.

Beale is expected to undergo surgery after scans revealed a fracture to his left hand that will keep him out for up to four weeks, a spokesman said.

Beale was already playing in the Super Rugby with an injured left shoulder, which is likely to require surgery at the end of the domestic season, which includes a three-Test series against the touring British and Irish Lions.

He suffered the latest injury in the Rebels' losing bonus-point defeat to Waratahs on Friday.

APV1 - ARU can't, or won't, do anything unless he is convicted of assault, and as he keeps getting hearings delayed it is at the very silly point where soon it will be a year since the punch-up, I expect he'll get away through mediation (ie cash settlement) so no conviction and no ARU penalty, esp as Lions tour gets closer.

@ APV1... rightly or wrongly, the ARU players collective says that the judicial process, however long-winded (alleged assault happened early June 2012), has to come before any internal disciplinary hearing: chairman Hawker has said on more than one occasion that Beale will be dealt with once court proceedings are wound up one way or another.

I did wonder a few times last year whether having this hanging over his head was affecting Beale's state of mind, clearly ARU had their doubts too as they dropped him after his Bledisloe shocker but kept him with the squad in case he did something stupid... also can't help but feel that his run of injuries is karma - justice delayed, justice denied & all that.

C&P'd from another thread:

"Justice Mediation"?

A let-off if ever I heard of one.

The ARU need to grow a pair and suspend him ufn. Like England did with Danny Care.

This is a nonsense and sends entirely the wrong message to up-and-coming youngsters.

melkdave - no, the shoulder surgery will involves months off rugby at end of the year; all this does is give him a rest. And hopefully time to complete mediation for that still not settled assault case from last year, next in court 17 April.

Was it his punching hand?

If Kurtley has to have shoulder surgey he defintely wont have time toi prepare for the Lions series. Most shouklder injuries take months to heal not weeks. Then he will need at least 4-6 weeks to get back on the horse to be able to play in a test series.

Methinks he wont have shoulder surgery before Lions unless he re-injures shoulder and has no choice.

Aussie needs Kurtley for Lions series or else O'Connor will have to be at fullback with no decent backup.

Hand will heal quickly in comparison.

And no Im not a doctor, just had lots of injuries myself over the decades.

Agreed. He should be able to be recovered from both injuries for the Lions tests.
